  1. I think it's hindsight that says something won't work. Sure, it's possible one could listen to FMF and decide, hey...this Waitin' For Tonight song doesn't fit, but I doubt it. The song would've been part of the track order and it would sound strange without it on there. In my opinion. I actually think Hypnotic Eye could've handled Waiting for Tonight. Maybe Into the Great Wide Open too...maybe sub it in for Built To Last.
  2. Do you know what else was "scrapped?" I'm curious what a post Into the Great Wide, pre-Wildflowers album might've sounded like.
  3. I hope you're in the audience somehow when they do play it, Shelter.
  4. That's a fun one. I don't think they've played it in 20 years! Maybe it'll make a residency. cheers
  5. I love that version. Another really excellent take on the song is from 03 (I think?) around the time of the Last Dj tour. If you haven't heard it, find a copy, it's great!
  6. Here you go, Ben. Enjoy! Again, its not the best sound quality. http://www.guitars101.com/forums/f90/tom-petty-oklahoma-city-ok-11-04-91-zip-123154.html
  7. I just listened to this on Playback. It's a good song. Much much better than girl on lsd. The playing, the attitude, Stan's drumming, it would make a good song to end a residency on. The camaraderie in the song makes it quite warm and enjoyable. Still not as good as U Get Me High, though! The former is both about the literal drugs and the companionship that can go along with that; U Get Me strikes me as being about something much more important, the realization of creativity and a celebration of the Muses; of the Creative Spirit. cheers
  8. Oh, those are good songs but I wouldn't call any of them hits. I'm talking songs like that on Greatest Hits, that people who aren't Tom Petty fans woiuld recognize. Maybe You Wreck Me and A Woman in Love could make the cut. Maybe. cheers
  9. That was an entertaining read! Tom's crankiness cracked me up. Sure some of that info I'm sure everyone on here has read about multiple times (Wilburys, the start of his career, etc.) but the overall piece was well written and gave a good facsimile of hanging out and conversing with him. cheers
  10. I think Tom could be his own worst critic. For a tossed off album of Wildflowers cast-offs, I think She's The One is great. "The one with Lindsey on it?" Petty says, furrowing his brow. "Never listened to it. I hated that record – the whole idea of it offended me. I only did it because I didn't have anything else to do. I was single and living on my own, and this idea came up, and I liked Ed and thought he was pretty sharp, so I wrote him a couple of songs. And then it just kept mushrooming into, 'Do the whole thing.' So I took some stuff I hadn't used in Wildflowers, really crummy versions, badly mixed, and put them on there. It was terrible, really. I'm disappointed I did that." Read more: http://www.mensjournal.com/magazine/tom-petty-still-wont-back-down-20151020?page=4#ixzz3pDZuN4Rp
  11. Very often a simple riff and a good groove are just the right ingredients for a good song. If they're going to play a cover like Gloria or Mystic Eyes in the encore to jam on, better to pull this out. cheers
  12. Thanks Sweet Little Queen for posting this. And thanks Thelonious for the link!
  13. I'd love for them to take that outro and just let it build and build and build, getting more crazy and psychedelic as it goes on. I have a feeling they'll play this some day, maybe at a residency with no warning. cheers
  14. I don't know about Stan and that song. I kinda doubt it but if they did play the Viper Room around that time, maybe there's another Stan performance. I can enjoy the instrumental outro of the song on live recordings, simply because it's something different to a lot of the standard songs I hear them play. But that's about it, never cared for the song.
  15. I think Walls was his last big hit. I don't know if they ever tried to do a Greatest Hits 2, what they'd put on there? Girl on Lsd, You Don't Know How It Feels and Walls? cheers
  16. That's an interesting theory, Ben. You could be correct. The thing is, while Tom's voice has changed, I actually enjoy his voice more as time has gone on. Sure, I still like it on those 70s albums, but my preference is for his latter day voice. I think his singing voice he used in Wildfowers and post Wildflowers could fit faster paced songs, it worked for You Wreck Me. I'm sure he would have adapted his voice to the song. I just think he preferred to go in this direction, since it probably felt more openly emotional, mature and different to what he'd done before. Didn't he say Mojo was the closest to how the band sounds when they're just playing for themselves at rehearsals and soundchecks? I think Tom enjoys a good fast tempo rock-n-roll song as the spice to the dish and not the main course. cheers
  17. I understand why since didn't most of She's The One come from the same recording sessions as Wildflowers? But I view them as totally distinct albums. I quite like She's The One.
  18. Mystic Eyes is a step above Gloria but I don't really care for it and I'd have preferred something of Tom's in its place in concert. He has plenty of songs they extend the way Mystic Eyes is, or they could've chosen a different song to jam out on. The 08 version of Saving Grace works nicely, they could've brought back Dog on the Run or even turn I Won't Back Down into an extended anthem. cheers
  19. 1. I'd leave it as is, perfect. 2. If they had put Waiting for Tonight on there, I'd probably just think it always belonged there. But, looking at it right this moment, I don't think the song fits in with the others. There's a lushness to it and a completely different feeling that seems like it would've really contrasted too heavily with the the rest of the record. 3. I don't know about that, I'd have to go back and look for it in the book. Maybe it just upset the balance of the album, or that one song is a lullabye and the other about something else entirely and it's too much of a clash and putting Waiting for Tonight somewhere earlier on the record upsets the flow. Regardless...Waiting for Tonight is a great song! One of the best TPATH ever recorded and the Bangles did a phenomenal job on it. I don't know what album this song could've fit on but it should've been released as a single. I think this could've been one of his biggest hit songs. It should be as well known as Stop Draggin' My Heart Around. A great match of Tom's voice and the Bangles. cheers
  20. Glad you liked that. Not only is interesting to hear Benmont's take on things, but You Tell Me is one of TPATH's lost classic songs. cheers
  21. Boy, this topic sure had gone in unexpected directions; from a celebration of the song, to a political discussion and now an all out comparison with better songs! For the record (no pun intended) I don't think Shadow People is anywhere near Mary Jane in terms of song quality. I also think Grew Up Fast is a better song. However, Shadow People is a good song and a good way to close out Hynpotic Eye. cheers
  22. dollardime....maybe you're right and Tom meant some moral to be contained in the story but I don't know, I can just as well believe he thought the lyrics funny and went with it. I mean, "funny". I get it, she does a drug, something bad happens, she's gone...and it just repeats for something like twenty verses. "I'm in love with a girl who smokes cigarettes, going thru 2 packs, a day, sallow skin and yellow teeth, ain't kissin' that no way, I'm in love with a girl who smokes cigarettes." Listening to Girl on LSD is like hearing someone tell a boring joke that lasts forever with a weak punchline. That it wasn't seriously considered for release pretty much explains it all. cheers
  23. Thanks for sharing. Hey, that's what this place is for. I see what you mean regarding the "mildly disturbing" chorus; for me it works and actually heightens the tension of the song, like everything just stops, that's how broken and sad the song is, before carrying on. cheers
  24. This song is connected to Wildlfowers, the successful single that wasn't a part of that album but is from that time and place. I think this could be the worst Tom Petty song he ever wrote. Which seems like a bit of a harsh judgment on a novelty "fun" song. But this sure as hell ain't no Heartbreakers Beach Party. That song is a fun homage to the frivolousness of beach party movies. Girl on Lsd is just a meandering, seemingly endless cutesy recitation of drugs. Live this song was insufferable, with long timed pauses for the audience to especially cheer the mention of each drug. Whoo-hoo! I'm doing marijuana...and he's singin' about marijuana! Ughh...just terrible. And Tom's anti-drug speech before or after the song. Blehh. Musically...who cares. A somewhat jaunty generic music that exists as a framework for the "hilarious" lyrics. I think this is the worst thing Tom ever released.
