Words on Damn the Torpedoes
MaryJanes2ndLastDance replied to MaryJanes2ndLastDance's topic in Great Wide Open
I usually enjoy all the little weird additions on their records, the sounds of "What's in here?", the strangeness on Let Me Up, the "weird intro" as you call it. I'm in favor of a completely weird album, with unusual song structures for the next TPATH. And I think Ben called You Tell Me a hidden gem or something, which it really is. A really catchy, powerful song, that chorus is great and the groove and the swagger on this one is great. Again, listen to this and then something like Echo and it's the same band (just about) yet sounds so different. I suppose that belongs in the other thread. cheers -

When I've a chance, I'll give Surrender, both live and studio another listen. Is the noodle raw in the box at full attention or boiled over in a hot pan of water and flopping across the bottom of the bowl? -

Ha ha ha ha! "holy". I think that type of oddball suggestion is fun. After discussing the Last Dj I went ahead and made my own mix with my preferred song order, so I understand your p.o.v. Refugee could work (and obviously does for you) right before Louisiana Rain, a powerful rock song right before Louisiana Rain gently shows you to the door. Per the actual album, I still think more is lost than gained when switching Refugee towards the end. A slighlty related take is American Girl. It's the last song on their debut and it works there, while being the first song on Greatest Hits and works there as well. -
Hmm...I don't know. I don't expect him to sound how he did back in the 80s and that particular live clip isn't the best sounding, so it's a little hard to judge. Overall, that is, on any of the records from 2000 on, his voice has sounded good to me. I actually think it improved with time, 95 better than the 80s. That said, his voice does sound powerful and resonant in the studio version of End of the line. And I love Hypnotic Eye, from the songs, production and his voice. Unless a singer has a voice I find completely grating, I'm fine with most I hear, the vox matching the music; I wouldn't say I'm much of an aficionado when it comes to vocals, generally. Glad you liked Something Good Coming. cheers

Nice Liberty. I forgot about Breakdown. I heard the version years ago when he did the Hit The Road Jack, that worked well within the song. Oh yeah, Too Much Ain't Enough was very good in '02. Other tunes they could jam on: The outro of It Ain't Nothin' To Me---it has that spacey outro The Apartment Song, giving Steve a chance to really go wild on the drum breaks Room at the Top---would make the song epic, really building on the themes and power Runaway Trains---again, the moody middle part is a good chance to jam Let Me Up----jam on the outro Supernatural Radio/----a moody outro, a good chance for Benmont to solo Makin' Some Noise---they did back on that tour but I think they'd really rock the heck out of it now, with a lot more grit and power. Finding Ou/Nightwatchman----rockers that could be jammed on, particularly the end of the former (they did the one time they played it on tv) and a chance for Steve and Ron to shine during the latter The Same Old You---the middle could be extended The Criminal Kind---thrown in some nice slide soloing at the end I think all of those could handle being stretched out and jammed on, expanded on, taken in interesting directions. If they wanted to extend songs like this, that's good but if even if it were an occasional thing it would still be good. Of course, they'd have to actually play these songs again! cheers

Aside from the fact that I don't like Surrender and am surprised by how much passion it evokes in listeners for being a limp noodle of a song, Refugee works really well at the start. Sure, it may be a case of being used to DTT as is, but Refugee is the best song to open. The quick drums, each instrument entering one at a time, the way the song becomes more powerful as it goes on (which is impressive considering how simple it is) resulting in a defiant statement, the band has gone to the next level. The following two songs do the same thing in different ways, expressing other emotions while highlighting how the band has improved. To be fair, putting Refugee at the second last track on the album could possibly work as well, it's either got to be at the beginning or at the end, my preference of course is at the beginning, staring things off with a bang. Other than that, your hypothetical track listing isn't to my taste. cheers -

I used to think that Mojo was the blues album but it's not really accurate. There are some really good songs on Mojo. I'm not a fan of the blues, a little bit goes a long way for me, but the songs I like on this record don't sound like the blues. It's more the band going in a new and very guitar driven territory. Most of the songs are longer than usual though, and there's no fast rock songs and too much filler on the album. But nestled within are some gems. Running Man's Bible, Something Good Coming, The Trip To Pirates Cove, High In the Morning, First Flash of Freedom, Something Good, Let Yourself Go.

Sure, I get it, Ben's Boogie (aside from being catchy, and fun to listen to) is also succinct! If the Melinda jam is too long for you, it makes sense that you'd like this instead. Listening to Melinda is a treat, hearing him do whatever he feels like, mixing in pieces of classical or jazz before building up those chords that signal the end of his soloing...just a great song and a live highlight. But like it's already been mentioned, they do balance these moments out with songs more faithful to the album tracks. A good balance. Though again, reworking and offering up alternate takes on some of their biggest hits would be fun to hear. cheers

Aside from Mystic Eyes, that's a good list! Have you ever heard the longer version of Refugee? I think from the mid-80s and the Great Wide Open Tour had really good extended Refugees. Live Anthology's version is good too. Mary Jane's from 03, the Last Dj tour is great too, check it out if you haven't already. cheers

The closest is the drum break on the live Heartbreakers Beach Party from the Echo tour. I would definitely like to hear him get a solo, ideally while the other instruments are still playing as well, supplying the foundation for a change for him to have fun over, throwing in wild fills for a good couple of minutes. cheers

It definitely has a structure and a specific moment when they begin to wrap it up, when they hit those chords a couple times and Steve returns with the solid backbeat. You know it's almost over at that point. Still, there's the freedom for Mike and whomever to solo differently every time within that structure. This is a frequent listen on concert recordings for me, nothing like a good ten to twelve minute jam. cheers

The salt shaker is perhaps the most incredible; so much comes from that simple little shaker. When they play the track without the shaker it loses something, when it's back in the song is complete. I'm not a big fan of Century City because musically it's just...average. Runnin' Down A Dream has a great riff. Century City has them rocking out but it's bland. Musically What Are You Doing In My Life is great, very catchy and memorable. I can understand when you don't care for a song because of the lyrics or when they weaken it; for me, this one is fun to listen to; it's quite catchy and I like the outro singing Tom does. Could've been a good audience singalong. cheers -

Satellite of Love would be good. Walk on the wild side is a bit boring and feels too similar in a way to other things they'd cover. Seven Nation Army by the White Stripes. Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner by Iron Maiden. It would fall into the category of a story type song, lots of places for Mike to throw in some moody slide guitar and Benmont to offer up some classically based soloing. It'd also give some people an opportunity to use the bathroom. cheers

Understandable...! That's good that you do your own solos! cheers -
Just one show to share with someone, which would you pick? I think it would come down to either the last night of the fillmore in 97 or the live anthology and I'd go with the fillmore. Since it is a complete show and has all the different facets, the hits, the blues, some jamming, some guest stars, covers and it's their longest concert, I think. While the Anthology has more songs, there's something good about hearing a full, unedited show. Is there any kind of consensus when it comes to live TPATH? Would someone else pick a show from the 80s? Which one? What do you think? cheers
-
Yeah, picture them either doing it outright, or working it into the middle of something; the audience would be quite surprised!

If it doesn't come out for Christmas I'll be a bit surprised. Perhaps all of you who are waiting on this (and I guess it is the hardest park, yuck yuck!) can find solace in that perhaps Tom's energies are on a new Mudcrutch and possibly another Heartbreakers record. cheers

Do you solo when you perform, Mikeyt? if so, do you recreate Mike's part or improv something? Maybe both? cheers
