CONCERT REVIEW: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Hi – It’s Lisa Miller…Tom Petty’s #1 fan with my review of the KQ Concert last Saturday night. First of all, the energy of downtown is so fun, I love getting to shows early to hang out. This time, we all met at Kieran’s Irish Pub for the pre-concert party, with cold beverages flowing on the patio.

I hosted the KQ suite for the night(Great Gig!) so I got to the show early and was the last one to leave. The first to arrive were Tony and Zak, KQ Listeners who were as excited as I was for the show. Zak said he had Bob Seger and Tom Petty on his bucket list and thanks to winning tickets from KQ, he could now cross both of those off. We took pictures in the suite and everyone settled in for the Smithereens. The last time I saw the Smithereens was years ago at First Ave and it was fun to see them opening up for Petty. They sounded great and mentioned their First Ave shows. They played an hour set which included Blood & Roses and A Girl Like You.

Tom Petty posted on Instagram that “the band has arrived” with a picture of their tour bus and a Minnesota State Patrol car. My friend Chona and I screamed; seriously, we’re both huge Petty fans. In fact, we made sure we watched the documentary on Tom Petty called Runnin’ Down a Dream before we went to the show.

When Tom Petty hit the stage, I was impressed by the simple set up. Just like Tom always said, “We’re a band.” He always wanted a group of friends to stay together and play together over the years, and he’s certainly achieved that. The crowd was on their feet pretty much from the first song to the last, the set list is below. He’s mixing it up in each city and going with deeper tracks then he has in the past. This was his final show in the US on this tour.

Highlights for me was the band introduction (I loaded that video on the KQ Facebook page) and Free Fallin’. I honestly LOVE every song the band played and loved how they mixed up versions with a little improvisation; however, Free Fallin` was a highlight for me. About 2 minutes into the song everyone was singing along any way so Tom Petty basically turned it over to us. He put his hands in the air like he was conducting the orchestra and we all got what he was doing. The crowd started to sing louder and he just harmonized in the background. It was a group effort and it sounded great!, really fun!

These days with artists showing up late to their gigs or not at all, I as a fan appreciate artists, like Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, who show up on time, perform their hearts out, thank us fans, and leave us wanting more. As Petty sings in Love is Long Road: “Some things are hard to let go; Some things are never enough; I guess I only can hope for maybe one more chance... To try and save my soul.” Yes, til' next time dear Tom

    Petty and the Heartbreakers.

  3. I'll spend half the day driving to Turtle Lake to see my Dad. The neighbors around the lake will shoot off fireworks at night, and I'll watch them, while trying to calm Gizmo. Gizmo will stay inside.

Our big celebration is Friday. I'll be cooking for 13 people, my family, for dinner. Dad and my brother haven't seen Miles since he was one month old!
