  1. I was getting ready for work and keeping an eye on the news. I had the Today show on, and I was aware that they had broken into the show with breaking news. I came over to see what the news was, and was shocked to hear that the World Trade Center had been hit by a plane. I was still watching when the second plane hit.

Shaken, I went to work at the Red Cross. I told my co-workers what had happened. We turned on the news and watched as the towers fell. I felt like picking up my boys at school, and going home. We were needed at work though. We were told there might be countless survivors and injured, and the need for blood might be great. As the day went on, and for days afterward, people streamed in to donate blood and money to Disaster Services. We were extremely busy for the next week. When word came that there were few survivors, our blood supplies were way up, with few people needing it. Blood components that could be frozen were. I'm sure much blood expired and had to be discarded, precious as it is. It only lasts so long.

Those first few days were surreal. I often had to stop, and close my door to cry. At home, I was riveted to the news, but eventually had to stop watching. I couldn't take the images being repeated over and over. It was so hard to explain to the boys what had happened. We talked of little else over the days that followed.

Even though we lived far from the tragedy, it seemed close to home, too. I lost my feeling of being safe living in this country. It was so disturbing to know there were people in the world who hated our country so much...

  2. Normally, just coffee, but I love eating breakfast out, where I'll have pancakes or an omelet. Breakfast foods are my favorite. If I'm in the right restaurant, I'll have breakfast for lunch or supper. Dad always makes us pancakes when we visit, too. He makes the best pancakes!
