  1. I also wanted to add...I will be posting an article my friend, Carl Anthony, will be writing on my Smokey. I got to know him through his video of his dog, Yeager. Carl started The Yeager Fund (through Friends for Pets in CA) in memory of his dog. He writes beautifully...and I am so looking forward to what he will write about my Smokey. He actually wanted to come and meet him...shortly before Smokey passed away. Yeager passed away on June 3rd two years ago. Carl was filming a segment on CNN (he is an author of political things, too) but it was too far for him to come. That did touch me so much.....he understands the love of an older dog.

Not sure I posted his video of Yeager here.....but be back to post it...

  2. Barb, Marion and Wildlflower...thank you

This last year, Smokey and I connected so much closer. Taking care of him, I was there for what ever he needed. He had so much love that he gave me...and with all that was happening to his body with the DM...he never was complaining....never in a bad mood....he welcomed each day with such joy. There are a few people who inspire me...but I will say, Smokey continues to inspire me. I want to be that person he saw in me....

Smokey's love and life will live on....with helping so many of these older dogs and their owners to care for them. And that makes me very very happy.......

Smokey's Fund was established by one of our generous donors, Beth Dietz, to assist with the care of senior animals that need medical care, above what normal care would cost in the sanctuary or shelter environment. Diagnostic tests, medications, treatments and equipment are all expensive and with the help from Smokey’s Fund, ACS will be able to support the special foster families that are so willing to love and care for seniors but may not have the resources for the additional expenses.

"My Smokey was a loving, kind and gentle dog….a loyal and devoted guardian……my constant companion in the garden and my very true friend. I have been blessed with the love of this older dog and I want this Fund…."Smokey's Fund"…to help others care for their older dogs. This special Fund has been established with Animal Care Sanctuary so that many senior dogs like Smokey can be helped in order to live out their lives comfortably while waiting for their forever home. Many wonderful people are willing to foster or adopt older dogs with special needs and this fund would help them with the additional burden of expenses for equipment and medications. Older dogs can teach us so many things…. about ourselves and about what we want to bring to the World. Trust, patience, loyalty, deep devotion and most importantly…everlasting love.

I was blessed with the love of an older dog…." - Beth Dietz

To donate to this very special fund, visit www.animalcaresanctuary.org and type "Smokey's Fund" in the dedication box.

  4. I know alot of my friends are on FaceBook and they know this already...but I also wanted to come to the Farm and share with all of you, too.

My Smokey crossed the Rainbow Bridge on June 5th. He was 16 and 4 months....the cruel effects of DM showed themselves last June of 2012. The Help Em Up harness gave him his dignity and he loved the start of each new day.

I knew it was time to call the Vet when Smokey was not eating and always loved to. The Vet was to come that night at 8pm after his work. I wheeled Smokey on the garden cart all around the property that day......by the big pond...to the back compost piles. I laid him on the grass under the shade of the small apple tree and we listened to the birds. My sister had come over to say good-bye. I picked some wild white roses Smokey loved to smell on his daily 'walks'. I lit a candle. Smokey passed away in my arms at 7:40pm....while I was whispering to him...it is okay, Moe is waiting for you...it is beautiful and so green there. The Vet came shortly after.....he checked on him.

Smokey had a beautiful spirit....never complaining.....never ever. He lived each day with love and I wanted so much to find a way to remember and honor him.

I worked at Animal Care when it was in Toms River in the 70's. It was/is a no kill shelter and we had sheep, goats and a pony, as well as cats, dogs and a beautiful toucan named Simon.

Animal Care Sanctuary has set up a fund....Smokey's Fund...to help senior dogs like Smokey live out their lives comfortably while waiting for their forever home.

Smokey has touched so many people....and his legacy will be helping so many more.....
