  2. - two galaxies perform 'intricate' dance Last updated at 16:21pm on 30th October 2007 Two vast galaxies perform a spectacular celestial tango in this astonishing new image captured by the Hubble space telescope. With the arm of one galaxy wrapped gently around the body of the other, the pair are slowly swinging around in a graceful performance choreographed by gravity. The dance of the two galaxies - vast clouds of stars and gas known collectively as Arp 87 - is taking place 300 million light years from the Earth, far beyond the edge of our own galaxy the Milky Way. Scroll down for more... Shall we dance? The two main players comprising Arp 87 are NGC 3808 on the right (the larger of the two galaxies) and its' companion NGC 3808A on the left Although astronomers have discovered hundreds of merging galaxies in the past, Arp 87 is one of the most beautiful. Each of the two galaxies contains billions of stars. Both are spiral shaped, although the galaxy on the left is seen from its side. Stars, gas and dust are flowing from the larger galaxy on the right, forming an arm which envelopes its smaller neighbour. A spokesman for Nasa said: "The resolution in the Hubble image shows exquisite detail and fine structure that was not observable when Arp 87 was first discovered in the 1970's." The corkscrew shape of the arm stretching from the larger galaxy suggests that some stars and gas are being caught in the gravitational pull of its smaller companion. The shapes of both galaxies has also been distorted over billions of years by their gravitational interaction with each other. Nasa said the two galaxies were incredibly fertile - and were producing larger than normal numbers of new stars. "Some merging galaxies have the highest levels of star formation we can find anywhere in the nearby universe," said a spokesman. Arp 87 was originally discovered by astronomer Halton Arp in the 1970s. The dancing galaxies is just the latest in a long line of spectacular space pictures captured by the Hubble. Since its launch on a space shuttle in 1990, the orbiting telescope has sent back pictures of our system, vast star nurseries, far distant stars and remote galaxies, invisible from the Earth. Some objects are so distant, the light has spent 10 billion years travelling to the Earth- allowing Hubble to effectively peer back in time. It is expected to carry on photographing the heavens until 2013 when it will be replaced by the even bigger and more powerful £2.3 billion James Webb Space Telescope.

  5. Heather Mills' Live TV RantHeather Mills unleashed a scathing attack on the tabloid press today, comparing her treatment to that of Kate McCann and Princess Diana. In a live interview on GMTV, Paul McCartney’s estranged wife also accused “a certain corner” of leaking negative details of her behaviour to the media. Heather broke down in tears during the interview, confessed to being “close to suicide” at times, and accused the media of “pushing her to the edge”. “They make up such lies,” she told GMTV host Fiona Phillips. “They've called me a whore, a gold-digger, a fantasist, a liar, the most unbelievably hurtful things, and I've stayed quiet for my daughter. I've had worse press than a paedophile or a murderer and I've done nothing but charity for 20 years.” She also slammed high profile people who have made fun of her disability, including Jordan and Jonathan Ross: “My sister was crying her eyes out because TV presenters are making awful jokes about me. I've got six amputee girls crying because they're getting bullied at school because people are joking about the loss of my limb.” Heather lost part of her left leg during a motorbike accident in 1993. But Heather was most emotional when she called for viewers to stop buying tabloid newspapers. "I need to get everybody to petition that they don't want to be lied to any more by the press,” she fumed. “They want their children to grow up in a society where press is just and fair and the size of the lie they print is the size of the apology they have to print.” Later in the day, Heather appeared on BBC News and claimed that her ex-husband had not offered extra help or security for her or her daughter, despite the fact she had received death threats.

  7. Great-grandmother celebrates 100th birthday by becoming world's oldest paraglider A British woman will celebrate her 100 birthday with a world record attempt to be the oldest woman to paraglide. Weather permitting, Margaret McAlpine will take off from a 2,500 ft mountain point near Kyrenia in a two-seater piloted by an experienced Turkish Cypriot paraglider. It will be her first time paragliding - although she has been bungee jumping with the Parachute Regiment before. Scroll down for more... Thrill seeker: Margaret McAlpine is celebrating her 100th birthday by becoming the oldest woman to paraglide Later tomorrow, McAlpine, who is partially sighted, will have lunch with a British residents' society and a British diplomat will deliver her birthday telegram from Queen. McAlpine's daughter is due to send me some bio material on her mum later today. Interestingly, the daughter is Elizabeth Forsyth, who made headlines before as Asil Nadir's aide. Forsyth was found guilty and jailed for five years in 1996 for laundering £400,000 of Polly Peck funds. Scroll down for more... Funloving McAlpine at 21-years-old But her conviction was quashed and she was freed after 10 months after the Court of Appeal ruled that the trial judge had misdirected the jury. Forsyth moved to northern Cyprus with her mum a few years ago. McAlpine was born in Stirling, Scotland – Forsyth says she's used to the mountains from Scotland and that's why she has no fear about the paraglide. McAlpine's great granddaughter will be among many well-wishers hoping to see the feisty old dame get into the record books.

  9. The Mayflower made its first landfall in 1620 at what is now Provincetown, Massachusetts on the 11th November after 66 days at sea. There the Mayflower Compact, the first democratic document written in America, was composed and signed. "And on the 11th November we came to an anchor in the bay, which is a good harbour and a pleasant bay.... a harbour wherein a thousand sail of ships may safely ride." This is point where the first people set sail for America

  11. Pensioner's Christmas light show stopped by 'nanny' health and safety laws Pensioner Dick Sheppard has pulled the plug on the spectacular Christmas lights display he has arranged at his home for the last 17 years - blaming 'nanny' Government legislation. Dick, 77, has delighted the neighbouring children every Christmas since 1980 with his amazing garden grotto, made of up of ten thousand bulbs and ninety animated dolls and animals. But after learning that to carry on the charity fundraising venture he would have to get a charity licence and spend a fortune on having the electrics tested to comply with new safety laws, he has put an end to the tradition. Scroll down for more... Pensioner Dick Sheppard could not afford the new safety tests needed for displays like on Regent Street "It has broken my heart but I can't see how I can continue with all the restrictive laws there are these days," said Dick, of Stroud road, Gloucester, who is also disappointed with the negative attitude of the police to his annual display. "This government is controlling everything we do, everything we say, every movement we make," said the former garage owner and vehicle stunt display team boss. "They are taxing us and grinding us down in every way and this is just another example of how they are taking all the fun out of living." Dick said he realised last year - when the lights display raised £5,000 for charity - that it would be difficult to keep it going without a lot of extra time and expense. "I was a bit worried last year when I heard that four other private displays had been closed down by the authorities for not having proper tests on the extensions," he said. "I mentioned it to one or two people who work in electrics and building and I had four different promises that they would do all the new statutory tests for me free of charge. "But one by one they have fallen by the wayside and not turned up. "To get the testing work done would cost, I'm told, between £5 and £25 per extension - and I have 150 extensions! "The bill could be as high as £3,750 and that would take a big chunk out of the money my wishing well raises for local charities. "The tests are only valid for a year so I would have to spend that sort of money every year to keep the display going. It is just ludicrous. "On top of that, the authorities are now getting very tough on people who collect for charity - they are insisting on us having charity licences. "I could get one - but there again you have to have a book keeper, an accountant, keep records and open a bank account. "It is enough work putting up all the decorations and lights and keeping them running without having to sort out all that as well. "So sadly I have put a sign out in the front garden with a santa sitting on top which says 'No more Christmas lights due to Government legislation.'" Dick, a former stunt motorcyclist and driver who used to run the Stuntorama display team, reckons his displays have made £40,000 for local charities over the last seventeen years. Delighted spectators - who stop for an average 20 minutes ot gaze at the dazzling array of lights and moving Xmas characters - throw cash into a "high security wishing well" which he has installed in his front garden. "I reckon my display has been the best over the past few years because so many people have shown their appreciation with donations in the well," he said. "But thanks to this nannying Government there will be no more." His recent displays have even included a snowstorm every hour - and a working mini fairground. "I started doing it when I lived in Florida but when I moved back to Gloucester eighteen years ago I carried on here. It is part of my natural showmanship. "People started flocking from miles away to see the house and then they started making donations for me to give to charity." Dick said that as well as being beaten by Government legislation he has also found security a problem - partly because of lack of police interest in protecting his display and the donations it raises. "I had the donations stolen twice in the early years when the money was put in a bucket in the garden," he said. "Since then I have invented the wishing well with steel bands and chains around it to protect it and a surveillance camera pointing at it. "But when I told the police about that they said: 'Don't even bother to bring the video in if someone steals the money because we won't be interested. "'Our advice is that you shouldn't put Christmas lights up in your garden because it invites vandalism!' "I really am in despair - what has this country come to?"
