  1. Anna Esposito, wrote to Suffolk Superior Crown Court in Boston, US, to explain that a mistake had been made, but a jury commissioner replied saying the cat, named Tabby Sal, "must attend" on March 23.

Mrs Esposito had included a letter from her vet confirming that the cat was "a domestic short-haired neutered feline".

Tabby Sal had been entered by Mrs Esposito under the 'pets' section of the last census. "When they ask him guilty or not guilty? What's he supposed to say - miaow?" She said.

"Sal is a member of the family so I listed him on the last Census form under pets but there has clearly been a mix-up."

A website for the US judicial system states that jurors are "not expected to speak perfect English".

The couple, both aged 19, were found by rescuers clinging to a tree after falling off the doll on Victoria's Yarra River.

They were told off by police who warned that the blow-up toy was "not a recognised flotation device".

So far 31 people are known to have died in the floods that have hit Queensland, Australia in the last two weeks.

The township of Grantham, 60 miles west of Brisbane, is thought to have been worst hit by the waters which swept through the town without warning.

Meanwhile across Brisbane, 11,700 homes and 6,000 businesses in 50 suburbs were inundated, and a further 14,000 properties damaged as flood waters peaked.

Towns in the southern Australian state of Victoria were preparing yesterday for their worst floods in 200 years.

Residents of Horsham, a town 190 miles north west of Melbourne, were trying to protect their homes with sandbags as the Wimmera River rose more than 13ft.

Wayne Swan, the Australian treasurer, said the flooding along the east coast was the nation's most expensive natural disaster ever. Some estimates say it will cost £12billion. In Queensland, the floods have killed 31 people.

  3. He might be the king of the world, but police say this emperor needs new clothes.

A tourist was shot with a taser three times by Florida police after he allegedly got naked and blocked traffic in Big Coppitt Key while screaming he was "king of the world."

After receiving a call about a nude man obstructing traffic on U.S. 1 at around 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 16, law enforcement officials say they encountered Richard Gervasi of Phoenixville, Pa., and two of his friends in a restaurant parking lot, according to KeysNet.com.

When a Monroe County Sheriff's Office deputy arrived on the scene, Gervasi, 43, allegedly began attacking one of his friends, then started approaching the cop.

The deputy fired her taser, but Gervasi reportedly ripped the prongs from his skin and continued to advance on the officer. So she fired again, knocking the nude man to the ground. Gervasi allegedly got back on his feet, only to be shot a third time with the taser and cuffed.

The suspect -- who reportedly claimed he was "made of steel" -- admitted to drinking and taking LSD before the incident. He has been charged with disturbing the peace and resisting arrest.

  4. Facebook recently announced that it is making user phone numbers and addresses available to developers, a move that a security expert said "could herald a new level of danger" for Facebook members.

Facebook isn't just releasing this information into the wild; it's adding it to the company's "User Graph object," or the permissions required to install an app.

"Because this is sensitive information, we have created the new user_address and user_mobile_phone permissions," Facebook wrote in a blog post. "These permissions must be explicitly granted to your application by the user via our standard permissions dialogs."

Facebook said the permissions only provide access to a user's address and mobile phone number, not their friend's addresses or mobile phone numbers.

Before installation, Facebook apps currently display a permissions-based menu that informs users what type of information the app is accessing.

Going forward, users will be informed when the app accesses their phone numbers or addresses.

Sophos's Graham Cluley, however, said that even though the information will only be accessible when a user gives permission, "there are just too many attacks happening on a daily basis which trick users into doing precisely this."

"Facebook is already plagued by rogue applications that post spam links to users' walls, and point users to survey scams that earn them commission - and even sometimes trick users into handing over their cellphone numbers to sign them up for a premium rate service," Cluley wrote in a blog post.

Cluley suggested that scammers could set up a rogue app that collects mobile phone numbers and then uses that information to send SMS spam or sell the data to cold-calling companies.

Cluley wrote that only Facebook-approved app developers should be able to request this information or that app developers ask for the data rather than automatically grabbing it. In the meantime, he wrote, users should delete their phone numbers and addresses from their profile information.

Last year, there were reports that Facebook user IDs were being sent to third parties. Facebook initially proposed encryption as a possible workaround, but later opted to embed a user ID in a HTTP POST body, which means it will not be exposed in any HTTP referrer header at all; encrypted or not.
