See you sometime soon Marion -
-
Thanks for the photos and reviews - I almost felt like I was there.
-
What a great bunch of fans - looks like a terrific group. I'm sorry I missed it.
I tried to get there, but I had to wheel my mom around in a wheelchair up and down the ramps at the Getty Villa and Getty Museum. It was an outstanding day - the weather was perfect and so were the gardens, views and art. But, I think we need to invest in a motorized chair before I get any older - I used muscles I haven't used in decades. We had a blast, but I was asleep by 1030 - just about the time the Dirty Knobs started playing.
So, I am determined to make it next time.
-
Look forward to meeting some of you. I've got the ticket and Continental upgraded me for my flight this morning - so things are looking good. I have a facial scheduled for my mom late that afternoon, so I don't think she'll mind me leaving her alone for a few hours to see the Dirty Knobs. See you soon. I'll be wearing a black and white sundress -

And I'll look like Rasputin.....

Anyone know anything about the parking situation?
-
Thanks - I am taking my mom to California for the weekend to celebrate her recovery from cancer. Seeing that we are coming from the Central Time Zone and I'm middle age, I am just hoping I can stay up that late. I know, I sound like an old lady. I think I am going to buy a ticket just in case.

Tell me - do the shows sell out ahead of time? What time is best to arrive?
-
I bet the Midnight Mission could find a good use for it and seeing that they just honored Dana and Tom Petty it would be a thoughtful fan tribute. Just a thought.....
-
Sorry Nurk - wish I lived nearby I would have let you have part of my fridge.
-
Happy Birthday Nurk.
-
Or donate it to the Tazzy Fund and let them auction it off (or donate it to a food bank in your area to raffle off).

I will get down from my soapbox.

I loved Jackson Browne's comments in the linked article below:
“This settlement is really a great affirmation of what I believed my rights to be, and all writers’ rights to be,” Browne said in an interview with The Associated Press. “One would hope that a presidential candidate would not only know the law but respect it. It was a matter of bringing that issue to bear.”
As a writer, I agree with Jackson Browne.

Rolling Stone posted the following today....

It appears that the law has not been tested on whether or not politicians can use artists' music (see below from the article):
"The Petty camp immediately sent the candidate a cease and desist letter, but the legal rights of politicians to play music at campaign events without the permission of the artists is unclear. Many legal experts feel that if the campaign buys a license from ASCAP they are allowed to play any song they want without seeking approval from the artist. Others argue that the use of a song at a campaign rally implies that the artist endorses the politician, and thus they must seek approval from the musician. The matter has yet to be tested before a judge, but most politicians stop the moment that an artist complains."
So, I guess I was technically wrong in my earlier comments, but I believe in an artist's right to choose and protect.

I am going to get up on my soapbox, not about politics, but about following the law:
I am a firm believer in the artist right to choose who can use his/her work and when. To protect artists, copyright laws have been established. A song, just like a poem, a novel, a photograph, belongs to the artist that conceived it. If someone wants to use that song, they are required to ask permission, whether they do it by purchasing limited rights to it – ie. buying an mp3 or iTune for personal consumption, or seeking permission from the artist for greater consumption. If a person is going to benefit from playing a song, the artist needs to be consulted. It is not that much different than using a song in a commercial, permission and payments have to be made.
I do not understand why politicians continue to believe they are above the law and that they can use something that belongs to another individual without asking permission. It is almost like invading another person’s property without asking permission.
I also cannot comprehend how John McCain ever thought Jackson Brown would allow McCain to use Browne’s song. Their political views are so diametrically opposed.
As a fledgling writer, there are many times I want to use parts of songs in my essays, but I know I can’t unless I want to go through a maze of red tape. Why can’t politician’s get it? Why are they above understanding rights? Ownership? Michele Bachmann just cease and desist – and take some time to learn your history and the laws that govern this amazing land of ours. Earn the right to lead by doing what’s right, not what’s easy and feels good.

Have so much fun on Saturday. I know its quite a ride for you, but I am so happy that it is in my neighborhood.
I've seen some amazing people there, who I have met for just a second afterwards buying their CD or just telling them I enjoyed their performance. It's an old barn, filled with wood, so the accoustics are fairly good. I like to sit at one of the two-tops upstairs, since the music mixes as it makes its way up toward the rafters. But every seat is a great seat. I got to see Kenny Edwards there with Karla Bohnoff before he died last year, what a sweet and talented man. Last year Janice Ian played at Dosey Doe, her voice sounded so true, so strong. Even though her hair is now white, her voice and guitar playing sounded just as amazing as they did when I was a teen. And the best was David Knofpler (formerly of Dire Straits) - just as lovely off the stage as on.
Such an amazing place to have out in the burbs of Houston.

Hey Lizzie - Sara Waktins is coming to Dosey Doe north of Houston not far from the Woodlands Pavilion on November 16th. She will be playing with the Blind Boys of Alabama. http://www.doseydoescoffeeshop.com/
I saw Leon Russell there a year or so ago. It's a warm, yet unique venue -- an old barn.

Thanks Marion for all you do. And thanks Nurk for starting this thread - being thankful for someone as giving as Marion puts a smile on my face, and makes me happy I love the Heartbreakers enough to be a part of this beautiful group. I might not post alo, but I love you guys!

His playing brought me so much joy on recordings and in person. I loved watching him, so confident, yet humble. I can still picture him up there, commanding the stage, his broad shoulders shining in the spotlight, his smile and those adorable eye. If there is a rock and roll heaven, I'm sure he's playing in the band, right up there with the best.
