I went to one store but they didn't have either of the records. They did have some Tom Petty bootlegs though. I thought that was weird. I guess it's OK for stores to sell bootlegs these days?
-
No, it was great. I knew the highlights that were coming in that particular show. There were some pretty dramatic parts on that '77 Zeppelin tour, and just anticipating those was very cool. That didn't happen often though - getting hold of a bootleg for a tour that hadn't stopped in Seattle yet. But bootleg records were actually a pretty big deal in the 70's. There were 3 or 4 record stores in the University District that sold them and we'd go out there often. I had hundreds in my record collection.

My Blu-ray copy of Soundstage has the "Extras" section with the 8 bonus tracks. It's got a publishing date of 2008 on the back of the package. It has a "Sears" logo on the back and I'm pretty sure that's where I got it. The "Live at the Olympics will get you 2 of the bonus songs, but I believe Soundstage is the only DVD with videos of "Down Home Girl", "Billy The Kid", and the J.J. Cale tune "I'd Like To Love You Baby".

You can't see it, but this is my sad face.

I've been listening to Merle Haggard all day. RIP Merle. I saw him about 10 years ago and it was a really fun show.

Classic Rock Video of the Day II

Pete with a Telecaster! Even if it's not plugged in, it doesn't prevent me from being happy. -
Welcome E.T. I think we're pretty lined up on musical interests and love for live music. Live is always my favorite as well - especially as you've noted because the Heartbreakers are unbelievable in concert. Every time I see them I think it's the best I've ever seen them. Strange how that works. Do you have the live stuff from 2013? It has become one of my very favorite live recordings ever from this band. PM me if you don't have it. And once again, welcome!

See, I like "Candy". My band plays it sometimes. When the bass and drums drop into that groove, the song almost plays itself. We dig it!!! No offense to anyone, but it's always slightly humorous to me when people think they can put a record together better than the artist. I'm always going to give the artist the benefit of the doubt, and even if there's a song I don't particularly like - maybe "especially" if there's a song I don't particularly like - I tend to spend some extra time with it to try to get inside the artists head a little bit and figure out what it was about that song that they felt was "good enough" to include on their record. With Tom Petty, we know he is very protective and proud of his catalog and his legacy. He's going to feel very strong about a song before it goes on a record. I like to look for that strength. My $.02

I like how Tom calls the audience stupid. LOL His stage presentation got better after that. -

You're right - this recording of Breakdown is from the FM broadcast at Capitol Records in Hollywood on 11-11-77. I had this entire show on the shelf and just copied it up to my dropbox if anyone is interested. I'll leave it up for a little while. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/565291/Live in Studio A Nov 11%2C 1977 -
Classic Rock Video of the Day II

Love this clip. You get a great look at Jimi's hands, and nice glimpse of his personality. He was a funny and charming guy. Unfortunately, the guitar is brutally out of tune, but he never let that stop him. I blame the fact that it's a right handed guitar strung lefty. When you do that without changing the nut, they don't stay in tune. You can see the huge nut slots on the treble side where they should be tiny. Anyway, Hendrix always said cowboys are the only ones that stay in tune. -
I'd like to see it stay in the setlist. I love the flow of that song. But we haven't heard the new record yet to see what might be there to replace it. And we know Tom doesn't play long concerts, so there probably wouldn't be room for more than 1 song that's 15 minutes long.

This song really hit me when they played it live. I didn't really expect that, but it makes sense. This band's music really comes to life in concert. Always has. And Mike's guitar tone on this song, and the whole Mojo record, is really powerful. Overall, it's kind of an uneven record for me, and I don't rate it that high in Tom's catalog, but it has it's moments.

Perfectly lovely version. I like the slower pace. I can't wait to see them play it. This song always struck me as Springsteen-ish. I think there's always a bit cross pollination between artists, whether they realize it or not. No Scott Thurston in this band so I wonder who will play that harp? Probably "Tom 2"?

For someone that doesn't use Spotify or iTunes (me!), is there somewhere else to hear this? I don't see it on YouTube.

Always liked that song. And how about that original Flying V that Dave Davies is playing? At least a $150,000 guitar these days. I wonder if he still has it? -
Ringo Starr, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne I Call Your Name
TomFest replied to dollardime's topic in Great Wide Open
Love this version! From Wikipedia........... Starr recorded a version of the song for a television special marking the 10th anniversary of Lennon's death and the 50th anniversary of his birth. The track, produced by Jeff Lynne, features a supergroup composed of Lynne, Tom Petty, Joe Walsh and Jim Keltner. -
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers first trip to Seattle, maybe? I was going to tons of shows at the Paramount during this time period, but sadly, not this show.

I always liked that song. And with Ed King (later with Lynyrd Skynyrd) on guitar. Ed wrote "Sweet Home Alabama". -
Noticeably slower tempo than the original version, but otherwise it sounds very similar.

That's awesome, Nurk!

Classic Rock Video of the Day II

Wow, you're digging deep into the archives, Benny. This is another band I've never heard before. I looked them up and this seems to have been their only top 20 hit, and they disappeared pretty quickly. The guitar parts here remind a little of "Zero From Outer Space", don't they?
