  1. Two weeks ago: attempted molotov firebomb attack

Two days ago: drive by shooting at a park leaves a young teenager in critical condition.

Yesterday: huge fight at a local school in response to the drive-by.

(all the above, gang related most likely.

Today: Hostage situation on Main St. Man finally releases his wife and kids, kills himself a few hours later.

My old-high school put on lock-down and now class canceled over rumours of another fight regarding the drive-by.

WTF? What the hell has this "small, safe" town come to? :013:

  2. It affected me a lot - more so than I think I realize.

I was thirteen, a freshman, and completely complacent/oblivious about world affairs and the fragility of life. Like Marion said, it really taught me how fleeting/unpredictable our time is on this planet.

I'll never forget watching the whole thing happen on TV with my mom and older brother before finally having to go to school where all we could do was more TV and listen to the radio.

I never really thought about it before, but I think growing up with that event shaping your high-school years was probaby the main inspiration behind my decision to major in International Relations in college.

  3. I saw Ceasescu's on film in history class today. Didn't bother me.

I guess heinous dictators (Sadaam, Bin Ladin should that day ever come) fall into a different category than average everyday convicts, though, as their execution carries serious political and social consequences, and thus should be a public happening.

But like I said, for the average, everday convict, no. Definitely not a televised event. Public for the criminal and the victim's families, but not for consumption by the greater masses. Yuck.
