Review
The Dirty Knobs Hit Hard With Their "Best Of" Album
By Mudcrutch - April 2003

When I read other reviews of albums something always happens that I don't like -- And that is 99% of the time the author feels the need to mention what other album or band the particular album they are reviewing sounds like. I guess this isn't a bad way to describe an album but common, get original. If you can't think of a few imaginitive ways to explain what an album sounds like then you should be looking for a new job.

With that said I would now like to tell you what band The Dirty Knobs sound like -- And that is Neil Young. Yes, Neil Young would fit right in with The Knobs on stage. Down and dirty guitar rock just like you would like to hear at a bar. Rough lyrics that would compliment a bathroom wall. And catchy, original melodies that deserve to be heard around the world. The Knobs bring you everything you would expect from a bar band and more. Little needs to be said about the members - Mike Campbell on guitar/vocals, Jason Sinay on guitar/vocals, Steve Ferrone on drums (now replaced with Phil Jones), and Ron Blair on bass. Great musicians that have cut their teeth with the finest. If you know their past work great, if not, who cares. None of that matters with their latest compilation album.

Disc one gets off on the right track so to speak -- "Out of My Head" could be considered sort of The Knobs theme song. This version takes you on a trip back to the band's humble beginnings in 2001 when venues would still list them as "The Heartbreakers" when they really wanted little to do with that. Frequently played at gigs the track is a good choice to kick things off with. Wasting little time the hits keep rolling off the album with stand-out tracks such as the "Boom Boom" cover and "Deep River Blues."

Disc two gets even better. The powerful "Powderfinger" makes an appearance along with two of my personally all-time Knobs favorites "Somewhere in London" and "Charlotte." The frustrating aspect of this release is that is spans The Knobs entire catalog (which is great) but at the same time still makes you beg to hear a complete show in it's entirety. But you have to credit them on wanting to put out a solid hits album.

Let's wrap things up with the third and final disc shall we? Many 2001 song versions appear here and I would be dumb to not point out the tracks "Down to You," an amazing song with a catchier chorus than any pop song I have ever heard, and the timeless cover "Hey Joe" which lets Campbell go off on the guitar and never come back.

Overall a solid album with little to left wanting. A must-have for any Knobs fan. And if I had to give it some cheesy score, I would probably give it a 10/10.
