Hey, I'm new here so howdy. I actually was looking for pix/setlists from last night at Cozys. OH SO AMAZING. I've only ever seen MC from the nosebleed section of giant arenas so it is still a shock to me that he is an actual humanoid, and not an ant. LOL. I don't usually have the best seats!

The DKs are my new obsession! I've been meaning to see them for years cuz I'm a TPHB fan but for some reason I always find out about the shows the day after, and as you know they are few & far between.

Anyhow that was probably one of the best shows I've ever seen anywhere! I don't think anybody can play like MC. He's el maestro as far as I'm concerned. And hearing that Big Jangle guitar in that teeny tiny venue was heaven.

I think the Beatles covers "She Said She Said & I Want You/She's So Heavy" were my fave, because I've never heard ANYBODY do those live. I am so clueless, when he brought up Slash he announced that there was "a young man who wants to play with the band" or some such nonsense, I'm like, "oh wow! That guy turns out to be a virtuoso! What are the chances." my friend who was with me goes, "HELLO! It's SLASH you dummy!" OMG....it WAS! LOL! I'm sure I was the ONLY one in the venue fooled by this ruse. The back and forth riffs in "Hey Joe" were phenom!

Hi Mudcrutchers!

Thanks guys! So without having to make you rehash too much, what are some of the venues you've seen DKs in?

Many years ago I attempted to see TP&HB at gosh....some Sunset Blvd. place, I think the Whiskey? And they were playing with Blondie, but humiliation of humiliation, my fake ID got rejected at the door. My friends and I crawled away to Ben Franks and cried in our tuna-melts (later to find out Ben Franks was part of HB lore - the phone booth they used as an 'office' when hitting town!)

I've seen them scheduled in Solana Beach but always such a bad time for a trip!

I actually live 5 minutes away from Cozy's....have they done that venue before? I hope they make a habit out of it!

I'm clueless when it comes to set lists or photography. So bear with me because I can only attempt to use words to describe our weekend of adventures. First, let me say, I am very grateful Athena still has all her hair. I know she went to such heartfelt measures to coordinate everyone's travel plans and hook-ups. Next, I have to say, LINDA and SHARON, we missed you!!!! I cannot believe Ref lives within a stone's throw of the Maverick Saloon and couldn't make it. What beautiful country you live in.

Ok, shows. Cozy's gets an A+ for Knob venues because it is just so darn convenient being in Woodland Hills and on Venture Blvd and all. Very sweet club. The sound was fine in there too, and Mike must have liked it to mention the "l00 people gig" thing. I took on Linda's role and left the center table where everyone of our group was hanging to go back behind the guitar area because those beautiful guitars were exposed whenever the new tech had to switch out with the boys. So I stood there holding the fort and luckily there was a sweet little window looking straight through to the boys on the side of the stage. I was happy.

Oh, HAVE to mention our buried treasures. So, we are sitting at our dinner table way before the show and the new tech hands Paul a Dirty Knobs t-shirt. Athena's radar ears picked up that Mike had found a stash of old shirts and buttons and keychains buried somewhere in his garage (the meaning of "garage grunge" now becomes clear). We waved the tech over and bought every single shirt and keychain he had so he gave us all the buttons too, "I GOT KNOBBED". Totally LOVE our swampy Gator on the front of the t-shirt playing guitar. Never going to wear it because it has to be collectable...

I panicked when Athena said they were staying at the Best Western in Woodland Hills (I could have swore I read her info post to everyone that it was the Holiday Inn). Well, I had pre-paid for the room and thought, maybe Susie and I did check into the wrong hotel, but to be honest we were sooo happy with the room (totally 4 star for just under $100) that I didn't care anyhow (although I was very happy to read my paperwork later and we were at the right hotel...thus, if the Knobs ever do the Cozy again we are recommending folks stay at that Holiday Inn, just down Ventura Blvd from the gig).

Knew it was going to be a magical weekend when Susie and I saw a rainbow over Pasadena enroute from picking her up at the Ontario Airport to the hotel/gig.

While I enjoyed Cozy's and how can anyone beat Slash showing up to play 'Hey Joe', the Maverick Saloon event did it. First, we caravaned through the gorgeous mountains of Santa Barbara into the Santa Ynez valley. Past Lake Cahuma, then through sweet little Skandanavian Solvang. Was not expecting the kind of experience we had at the show though. Mike said it so well, when he mentioned how rare it was to be in such a strong community feeling. One enterchanging group of musicians after the next doing all Warren Zevon songs. Even our Knobs learned two, AND after the benefit was over finished the night with a full Dirty Knobs show. My favorite songs of the Knobs was when Mike told us all he was going to play a Neil Young song that had never been recorded, he had been given it by a friend, called 'Interstate' that he felt totally expressed how a musician feels when he has been on the road too long and "dreams of laying down his guitar and just going home". Lovely song, which they performed right after Jason had done Neil's song 'Chrome Heart'?

I won't brag about the fact that I got possesed and asked every musician from the benefit to sign my ticket (which has this very cool cartoon of Warren on it), nor that Jordan Zevon was touched by my comment of how much I love the song "My Ride's Here" because I live in sight of Mt.San Jacinto (mentioned in the song) that he surprised me and gave me a big hug at the end of our conversation. Then later, as Susie and I were saying goodnight to him he told us to email him on his website and gave us both sweet kisses on the cheeks.

I know Susie is going to mention this, but Karen Jones, the organizer of the event, was a fireball. She taught us the true meaning of being a fan. So much love and spirit for Warren and her devotion to keeping his music alive.

Besides all this, we got to see two amazing Knobs shows too...

I took photos of the printed set lists both nights - however there were (as there often are) some last minute changes, re-arrangements and for all I know 'random selections' thrown in.

I'll post the info from the printed lists tonight, but we are all going to have to work together to piece together the real 'as performed' list.

The process will be fun and will stimulate memories for sure!

(This weekend, I felt like that things were happening so fast that it was a little like drinking from a fire hose. I'm sure things are going to come back to me, but many fine details are a blur to me now....)

Linda, the real world of work. We all know it. SO sorry you and Sharon missed this mini-tour. FYI, I did talk to Matt and Lance about hooking the Dumpstafunks up with the Knobs (kind of a Jason/Ron/Knob reunion thingy) and they loved the idea...after all, common ground at SoHos and the Belly Up....will update on the follow through, LOL.

I got a sweet informative pm here from a first time Knobs fan about Neil's 'Interstate' and hope they post it. Figured they should tell the entire story since I am not that informed. Sorry they too missed the Maverick show. I did scan my signed ticket and if I email it to Relic he should be able to post it here...I am still caught in the post-land of internet realms...

But, I am going to email Jordan Zevon because I too loved his dad's music and got totally inspired by Karen Jones and what one woman can do to keep a musician's music alive. So few people realize what a powerful songwriter Warren was. The spirit of Mt. San Jacinto is telling my heart maybe he should play here at her base.

One last comment. I had no idea that the 'Crossroads' Knobs show was in Yucaipa. Our crazy Inland Empire neck of the woods...:109:

Hey, Ames!! It sure was great seeing you. It was great seeing everyone!! I wish more of you could have made it out. It was a wonderful weekend.

I love this picture. I'm so glad you got a shot of this. Mike was about to take Lance's head off with the neck of his guitar. After dodging it for a couple of minutes, Lance acted like he was going to do a limbo under Mike and Jason's guitars. lol. It was so funny. Lance must have seen me laughing at them because he mentioned it to me later. He thought it was all pretty funny.

Ok, I'll upload some photos here in a minute. Or 30....

I'm so glad to see I wasn't the only one clueless about who Slash was. Brent said Mike introduced him as Rios, lol. I didn't recognize him without his hair all in his face and a cigarette hanging out of his mouth!!

Lance told me the next night that Matt and Slash used to play together (I had no clue). Matt called Slash before the show and asked him to come down. How cool is that? Thanks, Matt!!!

I thought the Knob's version of Hey Joe was tops, but let me tell you, when they put this guy in the mix it was over the top. It was truly so beautiful I could have cried. And I've never, ever heard Matt play the drums like he did on that song. What power! I was moved.

And finally, you can see Dale, the promoter, off to the side. Thanks, Dale for bringing the Knobs to Cozy's. It was a great place and we were treated well.

Oh man……I haven’t written a review of the band in a lot of years. I usually leave it up to the other Knobettes. They’re the ones with the energy. I know you guys are saving it up for next time…lol

The band was SOOOOOOO GOOOOD that night…

Here's the set list...

Cry, Cry, Cry -- I love this song..
Stereo -- Gosh…I have so many memories of this one… It’s a Knobs standard.
Trying To Make A Living on Minimum Wage -- Oooo….something new…I love it.
Shake These Blues -- This totally shook the blues out of me..
Humdinger -- with Sonny Boy Williamson. It’s not easy playing with a man who died a long time ago. But if anyone could do it, the Knobs could…lol This was really sweet. Mike called on the spirit of Sonny Boy Williamson… and sweet harmonica music filled the room…
Alabama Getaway -- Very Dead-ish.
I Sang My Balls Off /Deal -- Shhhhh…..don’t let deal go down.
Give You Everything I've Got -- A lot passion here… I love this song. Matt’s vocals were awesome…
She Said -- I’m in a Beatles dream by now…
Surf Set --- there was a little “like a hurricane” and “Layla” in the mix…“I want you“….bumble bee circled the beginning and end of the song…with a lot of surf.. Mike played the set with his blue Dusenberg guitar.
Interstate -- “This is best song about being on the road.” I think so, too. Jason’s guitar work flew…
Bride of Frankenstein -- This was on the first set list I got from the band in 2001... It brings back lots of memories
Loaded Gun
Sweet Little Sixteen -- It doesn’t get better than this..
Anyway You Want It
Guitar Boogie Shuffle -- It’s so good..
Hey Joe -- with Slash -- This was a surprise. I couldn’t see very well, but I peeked over some heads at some point and saw some of Slash's incredible guitar work on Hey Joe… Mike leaned over to him and said something… Then he hung back and Mike and Jason played their guitars together. It was perfect for something impromptu...

Here's my journey....
My day on Friday started out 500 miles north of Cozy’s. I dropped off my daughter at school; I went to my chemistry class and measured various temperatures of different things; then I picked up my daughter and we tore off for our adventure south. We listened to the Beatles all the way to my sister’s house near Pismo beach. There’s nothing sweeter than hearing your kid sing the Beatles songs of your childhood.. I made it to Cozy’s by 9:00pm and heard that incredible set… It was so nice to see everyone -- Nice John, Michelle, Marcia, Lizzy B, Raelin (Linda) who came all the way from Chicago. I met some new people who I'll probably never see again...lol I missed so many knobettes….

Thank you Knobs for a wonderful evening… It’s been a lot of years. I’ve never been disappointed.

Hi surfnburn,
Thanks for the set list. Since this was the first time I've seen the band, I hadn't heard any of the originals before and didn't know the song titles, but I'm sure looking forward to hearing them again. :)

Just a couple of additions to your list:
The song you listed as "Give You Everything I've Got" was actually the start of a three song Beatles medley consisting of "I'm So Tired", "She Said, She Said", and "Tomorrow Never Knows". No sitar on the latter, but they did get that drone sound working pretty good!

I think the instrumental jam started out with "Pipeline" or "Misirlou" (sorry, I get my surf tunes mixed up since there aren't any lyrics, lol). "Secret Agent Man", "Dazed and Confused", and "Rhiannon" were also part of the mix.

They also performed "Little Latin Lupe Lu".

The show time on the ticket was listed as 10:45 pm. I think they started playing at 10:50 pm and ended around 12:30 am. There was a short break before the encore, so they played about 90 minutes worth of music. Such a deal for $12, eh? :)

Alabama Getaway -- Very Dead-ish.

It either is an original Grateful Dead song or they covered a million times and made it theirs. As they did Deal.

One heartfelt moment for me was at the Maverick Saloon when the Knobs guitar tech was tuning up the equipment for the Knobs full aftershow and started playing 'Not Fade Away'. Flashbacks...

"Alabama Getaway" is definitely a Dead song. I remember seeing them perform it on SNL around the time it was released. I even heard it on the radio enough that it was probably considered a hit.
