Q: Who/what is Mudcrutch?
A: Mudcrutch was the band that Tom Petty was in directly before "Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers." The bands direction was an early peak at Tom Petty's long and successful career.

A brief history of Mudcrutch and where to hear their music can be found at the ABOUT MUDCRUTCH (http://www.mudcrutch.com/index.php?pageid=mudcrutch) page here at The Farm.

Q: What did Mudcrutch sound like?
A: Since Mudcrutch was formed at the very beginning of Tom Petty's career their sound was VERY "rough" and southern-rock/country-ish.

Q: What is the deal with Mudcrutch coming back in 2008?
A: Tom Petty has reunited with the original Mudcrutch members to release an album on April 29th, 2008. A short tour in CA is happening to promote the album.

A: Tom Petty along with Mike Campbell.

Why did they name it Mudcrutch? And what makes it awful? (I actually like it!)

Good question. According to Tom and the other members (referencing the documentary) they thought it was a "down and dirty" sounding name. What actual inspiration they had for it is unknown. They probably can't remember. Haha.

In retrospect the name seems a bit odd considering "MudcrOtch" is a term that has since been coined.

Makes sense. In Conversations With Tom Petty, he says it was a psychedelic name.

I'm thinking Mudcrutch may have played HOTlanta back in the day, there were a lot of Florida bands coming through town then...and HOTlanta booked them all!

Strange to read all this history on the band without mention of bass player Charlie Souza.
Tom asked him to join the band on their way out to LA and through OK while with Shelter. Charlie now plays with the New Tropics, and with the New Rascals.

Tom- How come you didn't ask the original bass player for Mudcrutch to play for this project?

not really.. there were probably many people left out. it just so happens those people are not coming out of the woodwork to claim they should be in the reunion.

look at it this way.....if you become famous today as a writer or musician or anything. how many people would you remember from your childhood? not many, so don't go there with mudcrutch or the beatles or anyone else. no one here was there and has no right to speculate. most everything from every band will never be known, even paul mccartney can't remember who played the bass guitar on some beatle tracks, cuz he didn't play them all. everyone here has to cool down and not read everything they think happened in tom petty's life. that can't happen and 99% isn't true. dare i say "get a life" or just listen to the music and enjoy it?

What Heartbreaker Tracks were really Mudcrutch tracks? What can we expect at a Mudcrutch show?

If you read the CONVERSATIONS WITH TOM PETTY book he talks about a few songs and their crossover from Mudcrutch to TPATH.

At a Mudcrutch show you can expect Mudcrutch songs and various covers, but no TPATH songs.
