Northern CA is loaded with history but I think the main spectacle would be the gold rush era. I have been to a couple of historic sites but I've never been to any of the mines in this area. I think I'd like to try that.

The most obvious ones around here are all the Beatles stuff, I think i`ve seen them all at one time or another .
My town goes back to the Roman times and i recently went to see a Roman villa which was being excavated nearby when they demolished some buildings to make room for a shopping mall, and there are prehistoric standing stones close by ,a smaller version of Stonehenge

The Edison & Ford Winter Estates in Ft. Myers. I always wanted to visit there but when we are down that way it's always to stay on Sanibel Island and I hate to give up my beach time.

Appleton is the next city over and where I was born and grew up...
On September 30, 1882 Hearthstone Historic House, built for Appleton businessman Henry J. Rogers and family, became the first private home in the world to be lighted by a centrally located hydroelectric station using the newly invented Thomas A. Edison system.

Harry Houdini-
Although Houdini claimed to have been born on April 6, 1874 in Appleton, Wisconsin, he actually was born on March 24, 1874 in Budapest, Hungary. Recently discovered ship's logs indicate that the Weiss family moved to Appleton when Houdini was a toddler. The family came to America because of a job opportunity for Houdini's father, Rabbi Mayer Samuel Weiss, who became Appleton's first rabbi. While Houdini wasn't born in Appleton, he fondly referred to it as his hometown.

We have the Meadowbrook Mansion (100 rooms and it belonged to the Dodge Family. not sure if it still does though) and the Walter P. Chrysler Museum. We also have the Van Hoosen farm (I have no clue why that's an historical site. lol I've never been there)

^ No kidding, Christine? How cool! They didn't demolish those did they?!
Well, I visit "Old Town" on a regular basis. Best margaritas and
chips & salsa around. LOL Seriously, I have not been to the Mission
since the kids were in grade school. It's not very far from where I
live. I really should go back one day soon. It's very beautiful.

Harry S. Truman home and the birthplace of Amelia Earhart. I visited both last year for a Flat Stanley project. I learned a lot!

Toni, you're not missing anything at the Winchester Mystery House. It was such a let down.
The only other thing I can think of besides the Winchester house is the San Juan Baustita Mission, which I haven't been to.

I live in the Gold Country and like Sharon said there is so much history. I've been to most of it, but there are still a few spots I'd like to see.

We have the La Purisma, one of the California Missions. We always have Vandenberg Air Force Base, one of the largest AFB in the world. We also have the largest deposit of diatomaceous earth here, it's mined and used in a ton of products, I know, I use to work there. We have a great history of the Chumash Indians. Not just their casino, lol. We also use to be the largest distributor of flower seeds, not anymore. It's all about strawberries, produce and Pinquito Beans. We have some local wineries, too.

I don't know. I've seen the Thomas Edison sites, and the D & R (Delaware and Raritan) Canal. And of course, The Proprietary House, just recently, where I was married. A couple 'George Washington slept here' places, haha. I've also seen where he crossed the Delaware.
Offhand, maybe The Stone Pony, though I've seen it from a distance, but I'm not big into Springsteen, so it ain't happenin'. I think Jon Bon Jovi (the real spelling is quite different, but pronounced the same) grew up a few towns over from me, and my friend Sandy used to get her hair cut by his dad, but he's not my thing (or hers!) either. There's a reason Jon's hair always looks great!:045:
