Cussing at work can boost morale and esprit de corps, British researchers say in a report that has spawned headlines around the world. So far this morning, Google News has indexed dozens of stories about the study. We found one that discussed the researchers' methodology.

"The study observed workers at a mail-order warehouse in England, which employed 14 people, and six focus groups of 10 to 20 people, two in England and six in the USA," according to the Eastern Daily Press (http://new.edp24.co.uk/search/story.aspx?brand=EDPOnline&category=News&tBrand=EDPOnline&tCategory=Search&itemid=NOED15%20Oct%202007%2021%3A57%3A35%3A240). "They included full-time and part-time workers in a variety of organisations, ranging from restaurants and retail, to a bank, nursing home and hospital."

Here's a press release (http://comm.uea.ac.uk/press/release.asp?id=792) about the journal article. Yehuda Baruch (http://www.mgt.uea.ac.uk/staff.asp?id=mg503), a professor of management at the University of East Anglia, says his findings suggest that managers should take note of the team-building benefits that accompany foul language. "For some people, the use of profanity is a way to create collegiality," he tells ABC News (http://www.abcnews.go.com/International/story?id=3744655&page=1). "For others, it's a way to relieve stress."

The researchers found that younger, lower-level workers were more likely to use offensive language. "If anybody is offended, it should be banned. But if everybody is happy with it, and we want our people to be happy, then we should be able to live with it," Baruch says.

The Globe and Mail (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/ArticleNews/freeheadlines/LAC/20071018/A2SWEARING18/international/International) asked Baruch if he swears: "Personally, I detest the use of profanity. I don't use it myself and I think it's something terrible to do," he said.

That feeling is not shared by journalists. Here's a selection of the fake expletives that our counterparts at other news organizations used to describe their stories about the study:

F-Yeah! Swearing At Work Is OK, Study Finds
Office Expletives: H--- Yeah!
That's for $@#! sure
What the ...? Workplace profanity boosts morale: study

I love cussing at work. It's a great stress reliever. But I only do it with a trusted few. I wouldn't want to offend anyone.

Yeah, they are much more relaxed in Europe. I really like that.

Oh God yes. Europeans are way more laid back then North Americans. I don't know what is up with North Americans but most have no sense of humour and are quite prissy.

We use to have a "cuss" jar in my department when I worked. You could swear, you know, within' reason, but...you had to put a quarter in everytime someone called you on it.

Then every now and then, we would take the money and have a department lunch.

Made everyone happy.

We have some realy potty mouths here. I'm one. I think it does release stress and it's fun. We call each other names and it's just great fun. And our office manage is a real whore.

Well Shit....I always knew there was a benefit to swearing.

I swear around people who I know well... It does relieve stress and put it all in perspective....lol But I wouldn't in front of our patients or employees who are ultra professional at work. I imagine it would be stressful to hear something like if you didn't like it.
