Let's face it, when this band does a cover song, they make the song theirs.

What are your favorites?

Off the top of my head -

Psychotic Reaction - 2002 tour version
Down Home Girl

The new "Lost Highway" is fantastic.
I also love "Shout" from "Pack Up the Plantation" and "Thirteen Days" from "Soundstage".

"Psychotic..." for sure.. the build-up in that song is simply numbing.

And lately I have been really into Mystic Eyes :)

No doubt-Asshole. A dreamy out of time quality to it and a great osng in its own right.

But the Wilbury's version of Runaway is one of the best covers ever. It shows that the song can transcend time and with updating the quality of recordings the song could have been a huge single in the 90's.

Also, cheese can often be tasty.

I couldn't narrow it down any more than this:

Diamond Head
Dixie
Friend Of The Devil
Hang On Sloopy
I'm Cryin'
Little Bit O' Soul
Lost Highway
Mystic Eyes
Sin City
Slaughter On 10th Avenue
Telstar
Wild Thing

A lot of the time, I think the band's cover of the song is better than the original!!

'Johnny B. Goode', though I think it's a different one than the one I've usually heard played, which I actually don't like (until maybe I hear them do it, anyway!). I actually call the one they do "Bye-bye Johnny B. Goode" because that lyric is featured prominently in the chorus. I believe they did it at the first Farm Aid.

Bottom line: Is there more than one version of this song?

There are so many... You already mentioned the most but hey, you all forgot "For what it´s worth"!!! What do you think about this one? I absolutely love it. It´s unbelievable. Mike´s guitar is awesome. Just perfect. They are so great live. I wish there were more live albums.
I also like their version of "You can´t judge a book by looking at its cover". :003: It always makes me smile and dancing around like an idiot.
Those two songs are on a live CD I got from eBay. It´s called "Anyway you want it" (for those of you who may not know what the hell I´m taking about). One of the best things I´ve ever bought there. :023:

I'd have to say "License to Kill" is easily my favorite (from Bob's 30th Anniversary Special....)

I also want to mention a song that is NOT a cover, but is not exactly one they would include on their official discography...

the "Benmont Boogie"!!!!
I love it!

Mine is the only one I can find, which is a shame b/c it's not a very high quality video. It's over at google video...

I've always liked "I'll feel a whole lot better". I've always liked the byrds version, and the writer Gene Clark, and I feel Tom helped to bring Gene some recognition, and generated some royalties for him, at a time when he needed it. Tom's version is close to the original arrangement, but he did the gtr riff longer in the verses making it easier to play and sing at the same time (for me anyway). My band plays this one fairly regularly and people still respond and dance to it.
