OMG!! I loved, loved, LOVED that movie!! It was everything and more
than I expected. The audience was great, too, and the theater was full.
Oh, and did I mention I love our band? I'm just so proud to be a fan of these
great guys.
They're a true class act. What a treat to see it on the big screen.
The DVD will be incredible, too. Can't wait till tomorrow! (Oh, I guess it
already is tomorrow! lol)

^ :) !!!!

Steve Ferrone and Peter Bogdanovich attended the Los Angeles screening tonight (as well as a young guy who was the spittin' image of a young Mike Campbell ;)

Peter briefly addressed the audience before the show.....

After the documentary, one of our gang said to Steve Ferrone, "Now what we need is a Tour!". Steve looked over with that big smile and said something along the lines of "Yea, I could go for one of those too!"

We bumped into Peter in the parking structure as we all were trying to find our parked cars. I congratulated him for creating such a wonderful film, and thanked him for his gift to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers fans everywhere.

Peter really digs the music. :)

So if you happen to go to a live show one of these days, and look over and see Peter's smiling face.... don't be too surprised!

As promised, one fan at the screening won a copy of the book :) We saw one fellow leaving with a movie poster too - with Peter's autograph on it :)

Just lovin' that movie! So many wonderful moments woven into a jaw dropping foot tappin' makes you want to get up on your feet and dance 4 hours of fun!

Lovin' how Peter worked Mystic Eyes into the documentary. It was so perfect.

(Oh, and the DVD is on its way from Best Buy - just got the tracking number via email)

We did notice that the documentary shown at the premiere was slightly different from what we saw tonight. We can think of a couple of changes to the presentation. It will be interesting to see what is on the DVD.

What an amazing day for TPATH fans :)

Peace

^ Relic, I know what you mean. During those big concert shots, I just wanted
to get up and sing and dance along with the music. I'm ready for a tour.
What a treat for you to see Steve Ferrone and Peter Bogdanovich!

One thing I loved was how there's so much great footage of ALL the guys.
And Tom really does do a great interview. I just love his sense of humor!
Also, it is evident how much the guys all loved Howie.

You know what else? I kept thinking how much our Anna would have
just loved this movie. I thought about her many times during the film.

This is the second time we've run into Peter in parking lots after gigs around L.A.

Its very weird. One moment your fumbling for your keys and then you look up and standing in front of you is Peter Bogdanovich. That is worth a double take every time.

Seeing Steve there was super cool - it was very fun to enjoy the theatrical release with him. :)

We keep seeing Anna's face in crowds at musical events ...... It happened again tonight.

And I get the feeling that somehow, Anna isn't missing any of this.

Wow! It's 2:52 am and I just walked in the door from San Francisco about 15 minutes ago. I think I'm still in shock. I am WIDE awake! AND I'm just blown away. Peter Bogdonovich did an incredible job telling the story of our band. I loved every second of it. It grabbed me from the beginning and wouldn't let go. I gotta tell you, mentally it didn't feel like 4 hours but whenever I moved to get up, my body knew it was long time, lol. Oh, and our projectionist had to come out and tell us that he didn't realize that the movie itself had factioned in the intermission, so we ended up getting an extra 12 minutes of intermission time. Which was fine with me because it gave us more discussion time. :)

I know people still haven't seen it so I'm not going to give anything away. I'll just say, yes there was alot of stuff we already know but there are a few surprises and some great stories. There were lots of great laughs and some tears as well. I just can't wait to get my hands on that DVD to see it all again. Not that my love for this band has ever faltered but it certainly renewed my spirit where they're concerned.

Lynette (Fansince82), thank you so much for getting me there and back safe and sound. We always seem to enjoy each others company. Linda (Doxiejoe) it was great to see you again. I hope you made it safely back to the hotel. AND Lizziegirl, as always it's a blast to see your beautiful face and Mike too. I swear you look younger everytime I see you. Damn! lol. Hopefully I'll see you in December. ;)

I had my first ride on the BART train into San Francisco. That was amazing! I've always avoided going on there because it goes under the bay and that just freaks me out. I never gave it a second thought.

Barb and Steve, I enjoyed reading your reviews! Glad you two had a great evening.

Yay, Sharon! So glad you all had a great time. How cool that you guys all got to see it
together. I'm like you - I can't sleep either. The movie just keeps playing in my head!
Oh, I loved all those cameos! Like Eddie Vedder, etc. I won't mention
the others yet. But they sure added alot of fun to the film.
Sharon I agree too, that I'm wanting to get out my old TPATH DVDs and
blast them tomorrow. Some of the early ones that I have not heard in awhile.
I have a new perspective on some of them now.

Just a quickie - have to still get my thoughts together -
I'm most struck by how this is the story of the band - not just a Tom-thing. I wonder if the guys realize that for many of us it is so not just about Tom - the thing I loved the most was the interviews and screen time with the rest of the band... I mean I've never really heard much, especially on film, from any of them - but the movie gave me a whole new perspective on the guys as individuals... esp. Ben and Mike. Same personalities I gathered from the music and stage time, but to hear them talk at length, it was just perfect.

and, of course - Scott! :003:... damn I sound more and more like a groupie each day, but there is something about that man I just can't get enough of!

I left kind of bummed because it almost had a nostalgia-feel to it - like this is the last time we'll get to see them all together in concert - but when I think about it, it was all about "nothing seems to keep us from playing," so there's hope for something, maybe something different than we've gotten used to, but something nonetheless!

... was also kind of cool that, while there couldn't have been more than 50ish people there, the crowd clapped after the songs, sang back to "Wreck Me" at the beginning, even the moron who yelled Freebird at the Vic was there yelling it during "Learnin' To Fly!"

The start was a bit unsettling for me though, something about seeing them up there at the start of a concert, but not being able to reach into the screen.. it was that real.

Damn! we need a live show - I know, they give us all this and it's never enough - but seeing it all on screen just makes me want it even more!

We went to Indy to see the show. It wasnt packed, I was dispointed with the crowd. There was a few laughs , but not much else. We ( me and my brother) sang to every song. I danced in my seat.
I laughed , I cryed,, in all I really enjoyed sooooo much. Any TPATH fan will love the movie.

Ryan,

That was one of the things that seemed different during the theatrical premiere (as opposed to the studio premiere at WB studios).

I can't know for sure if it was simply the difference between the two different theaters sound systems (The WB studio theater is stocked with the very best of the best equipment - of course Mann's is no slouch when it comes to equipment either), but I think there really was a difference in the soundtrack. I too felt that the rear channels were mostly missing in action - particularly in the first hour or so of the film.

Hopefully this won't be an issue on the DVDs, because the soundtrack simply enveloped the audience from all angles and truly conveyed the experience of being in the concert crowd.

^ Oh Carol, you should have come, it was not hard at all to sit and watch this.

I agree with Amylou. I think what really made it a hit was that it was about the whole band, not just Tom. I loved that. Because regardless of what anybody says or thinks, the big success story is the entire band.

We had a small theater too. You know those bay area yuppies, they can be a bit much. But I think everyone was really into it and enjoying it. We all clapped at the end. Of course we had Miss Sourpuss sitting in front of us. She was "bored". People like that kill me. If you were so bored with it, take your ass home or shut up about it. Other than that the crowd was pretty cool. There was a guy there that actually asked us about The DK's. He was specifically asking about Jason Sinay. It's cool to know that people are discovering them.

Ryan, I think we had full surround sound. But I wouldn't swear to it.

I'll be glad when everyone has seen it. I'm just so glad I got to see it on in the theater. Heartbreakers rock on the BIG screen!

Magnolia

I think we had surround sound, too. And, it was cranked up LOUD! I'm so glad
that the S.D. audience was fantastic. They laughed and cried in all the right
places and really seemed to be loving it. It was all I could do to sit still!!

^ Sharon, I hate people like that, too. Shut the fuck up or go HOME!!!

Oh, one other comment on the crowd - every possible age seemed to be
represented. There were a couple of school-age kids, teenagers, college
kids, 30s,40s,50s, 60s, you name it. I loved that.
And the majority, thought not all, lasted through the entire thing.

^ LOL, I caught that too, a couple of times.
There were a couple of other moments that had me in stitches, but I don't dare spoil it for those who haven't seen it yet.
Anyway, we had a pretty good crowd at the Dallas Magnolia. A few people spontaneously clapped and the couple behind us was singing along to everything. We had a few dingalings who left at intermission - guess that's who you tell the film buffs from the real fans.
I don't know if I can contribute anything new, other than that it was a fantastic experience. Everybody here has to see it, period.

A couple of radio stations that sponsored the movie gave out RDAD posters which was a nice touch! My husband and I each won t-shirts and they posted our pic's on their website. I thought we won TPATH shirts but it was the station's logo, lol.

Lizzy, I hope you don't mind me posting this here, but I just had to, lol.

Runnin’ Down A Dream by Lizzygirl

I’m not going to go into how great the guys were, the interviews, the footage, etc. That goes without sayin’. The movie is really good and four hours just flew by. It reminded me of a famous sayin’, “for just one moment, everythin’ was alright.” And for once, I stayed awake throughout the entire movie (a personal problem but I won 10 bucks from my boyfriend!)

All that bein’ said, I’d give the movie 4 out of 5 Raisnettes.

I need to preface by sayin’, I’m neither a movie critic nor reviewer. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Peter B. movie (I’m more of a Woody A. type) so perhaps Runnin’ Down A Dream was a typical Peter B. production but I wouldn’t know. There was a lot of old footage that was great to see but so much of it was grainy, pixily and YouTube-ish. I kept thinkin’ to myself, how can they make The Wizard of Oz look so good but not this? And perhaps the answer is that it was a Peter B. call to keep the footage genuine but even some of the more recent footage was blurry (I kept thinkin’ to myself… where are my glasses, but I don’t wear glasses). I had also already seen a lot of the material previously but that’s another personal problem.

I would’ve enjoyed seein’ more behind the scenes stuff like the big semis and guys unloadin’ crates of equipment and unravelin’ yards of electrical cords and somehow managin’ to get it all right (oh except the one time in Berkeley where they didn’t but that just makes me realize what a great job they do night after night). But I guess that would be a bit 60 Minutes-ish and not Peter B.-ish.

I really enjoyed the Traveling Wilburys footage… wow. And Dave Grohl was hysterical (now THAT part could’ve qualified for a Woody A. film). And the airport story of Ron made me wonder if that stuff has long lasting effects (in a good way), and if so, more people should go there! Mike C. got significant face time…. that’s always a good thing. All the concert scenes reminded me of how much I miss seeing them. This past summer, my Torontonian travelin’ buddy and I tried to think of a concert worthy of seein’. But between having to travel to places like Tulsa, OK (no offense to anyone) or sittin' out in the Windy City all day in the heat, we couldn’t come up with anythin’. We ended up in Las Vegas…. but that’s a whole ‘nother story.

P.S. It was really great to see the Charlie’s Angels from Sacramento (you know who you are!)

P.P.S. Polka dots never looked so good! http://tompetty.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Ok, I've got to go to bed, so I don't have time to read everything and have a real discussion. I'm just going to post what I put on the "other" messageboard.

I watched the DVD tonight. I was wishing I could have seen it in a theater! And I can't wait to watch it again.

It's all running together right now, but the scene that stands out (go figure) is the one where Ben was cussing everybody out. LOL. And Tom was goading him, too. hahaha. I thought that was so funny. And my goodness, I guess I never realized how opinionated Ben is. Makes me love him all the more.

I loved hearing ALL of the band talk about their experiences. Having mostly only heard from Tom all these years, it was nice to hear how much it all means to the others. You read some of that in interviews, but hearing them talk about it is so much different. And they come across as really sweet and down to earth. Which, I guess we always knew, but it was refreshing to see.

And seeing all the stuff about Mudcrutch and the beginnings of the band, well that was such a treat. You know the story, but the way it was edited together was just beautiful

The parts about Howie really hurt. Very painful to watch.

Ok, maybe it's not running together. I better stop and go to bed. Man, I loved this movie!!!

(Anybody ready for a tour??)

Echosoftom
10-17-2007, 01:32 AM
^ LOL! That's exactly what we said when we talked out of the theater Lizzie. We're ready for a tour!

That whole scene with Benmont going bolistic on them and Tom egging him on was hilarious! That's some great footage! The other one was when Tom talked about Dave Grohl drumming for them on that SNL show. I gotta tell you, I've seen that on reruns many times and never once did I notice in the background that David was just going wild on those drums. That had the whole audience cracking up.

No Houston screening of the film, and could not make it to Dallas on Monday, but I had the pleasure of watching the DVD tonight with LizzieB on her 'big-ass' TV!!

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and am ready to watch it again. Peter B. did a fantastic job of putting all of the material together. The movie did not feel like four hours, and at the end I was still wanting more. So much good concert footage!

All of the interviews and 'home movies' were great, and I LOVED:055: all of the early footage of the band. I already knew most of the stories, and some of the footage I had seen before, but the recent interviews and insight from the guys made the stories even better. I loved seeing Benmont loose his cool! I would never have suspected it!

I would like to have heard more about Mike: when did he first start playing the guitar, what got him interested in music, etc.

I would have enjoyed seeing an interview with Stan.

It was painful to see Howie's demise again.

Most of all, the movie left me wanting for another tour, or a stand of live performances somewhere.

My wonderful husband gave up his baseball game tonight to keep me company while watching this film. I just want to thank him for that.

I like everyone else, love this movie! I especially love the Ron Blair time. God, did I ever tell you how much I love that man? LOL! I also have a whole new respect for Mr. Benmont Tench!

I have alot to say about this movie. But...there isn't that much more to their story than what most of us fans already knew. Some things were more clarified and I did appreciate that.

Personally, I just feel like alot is missing. I know, I know, they only had so much time to work with, but...

Very thankful for the cd that was included in the DVD set! What wonderful versions of those songs.

Hey, Kay. It was so fun watching this with you! Thanks again for coming over and especially for picking up my copy. I can't wait until we have time for our Petty party. Maybe we can watch the movie again.

My husband thinks it's Stan's ass on the tour bus. I can see that from him, lol.

And speaking of Stan, I just hated the part about his slow separation from the band. I really hate that things ended that way and also that he didn't do any current interviews. It kind of breaks my heart knowing how close they all were. It was hard to watch in the movie.

Also, I always felt Tom was such an ass to the guys about FMF after seeing him on an interview after it came out. Basically, he said he did it to prove to the Heartbreakers that he could make an album without them. But after hearing him talk about how the guys were bad mouthing the album, I guess there was just a lot of hurt going on all the way around. Hearing from them about that whole era really gave me a start, because it seems the band was closer to falling apart than I ever suspected. Man, I'm so glad they hung in there.

Ref - I loved seeing Ron's parts and I thought of you so many times. That man is just downright sexy! And so sweet. I've never seen him with gray hair. LOL, that cracked me up for some reason. I guess they've all got pretty good colorists.

Lizzie, I think your husband is right...that sounds like something Stan would do. It really surprised me to hear that Howie was just as upset as everyone else. I always thought he was so middle-of-the-road about things like that.

I thought it was so funny to see Mike giving the camera the finger..."Thanks, don't mind if I do!!" LMAO!!!

This is from orngebunny, so sorry I meant to merge your post here, but instead I accidently deleted it.

I just want to say that I loved the movie. It was great. I drove 5 hours to see it and then drove 5 hours back. I got home at 5:30 got ready for work grabed a quick nap and went to work. the whole day the movie played over in my head. Maybe that is how i got through the day at work. It was so great. I can't wait untill i get the dvd. It was so worth the drive and the sleep deprivation.

Me too Amylou! I almost cried during that whole scene. It was so sad. Here was this man who was practically an icon in the sixties and they were treating him like he was nothing. And I think those music industry assholes had made him think he was nothing. He looked like his confidence was shattered until Tom came along and told him basically, you don't have to take this crap. I love when he said Tom was his hero.

I watched the first part last night. Loved it. That Jimmy Iovine is a character isn't he?

It was a very fun night. I thought the movie was very good, yes. However, I guess I expected more from a director of Peter B.'s caliber. I understand that it's a documentary though. And, like I mentioned, I found the blurry footage annoying... maybe it's better on a regular sized screen. But what a way to watch the credits...scorchin' version of Runnin' Down a Dream!!

It's a nice tribute to a group of musicians that have lasted as long as they have. It's amazing that overall they didn't have much turmoil like so many bands do. Could you imagine if there was a Patti Boyd type in there? Maybe there was but Peter B. left it out... lol As for Stan... he didn't seem to realize who was Boss.

Great to see fansince82 (Farrah), doxiejoe (Kate), and of course, Sharon (Jaclyn)! I give you all a lot of credit for driving all that way to see a movie.

I'm just going to ramble here....this is long and may be a spoiler if you haven't seen the movie.

Tom and Mike were only 13 when the Beatles came around. I bet they never dreamed in a million years that they would become such good friends with some of them.

The Epics played three songs at the dance....they loved them so much that they played them again!

Love the story of Tom meeting Mike for the first time. Mike had some skinny ass legs!!

I liked listening to the views of Tom Leadon and Randall Marsh. I felt sorry for them that Mudcrutch broke up. I can't wait to hear the new stuff. The scenery behind Randall was so Florida!

The Benmont pictures were so cute. You can totally see Benmont in that little boy's face. Hairy Benmont was pretty darn cute too!

I would have enjoyed seeing more Mudcrutch footage like the whole concert at the Rat. Maybe that could be added to the Mudcrutch package.....I know I'm dreaming!

Jim Lenahan was so cute and funny. I wonder if he is that upbeat all the time.

HAHA! Benmont and Stan's band were called the Drunks. I wonder what happened to the songs they recorded. I'd love to hear them.

Tom Petty and the Nightros.....HAHA!

The hash story was hilarious! I had heard it before years ago. It was fun to hear it again. It's so fun to watch that Rock Palast video. I always enjoyed it before but knowing what we know it's funny as hell!

I wonder if they will ever release Dog On The Run. It's a great song! I love that jam. Especially Ron's baselines.

Crystal Gayle was pretty. I wonder whatever happened to her.

Denny Cordell...."They were always smoking my f*cking reefers. :033:

The story about the Waiting was cool. I always love to hear Tom tell that story. Eddie Vedder's story was funny. He was jealous of Tom!

Mike's story about Stevie and Woman In Love was sweet. Jimmy Iovine.....yeah, that was a bad weekend. haha!

Who's bare ass was that on the bus? I guess they will never tell.

Tom thinks he doesn't have an accent.

It was kind of weird to hear Tom tell the story about his dad in front of the family in Gainesville. I guess it's no surprise to them though.

Loved watching them play Keeping Me Alive. I'm so glad they included it on the live set. Phil Jones played great on that. He looks so different now. He's such a character now!

Wow, I never knew Don't Come Around Here No More was meant for Stevie. I'm glad Tom "stole" it.

Tom...."You don't have any drugs, do ya?"

The Gainesville movie audience loved it when they played Southern Accents from the Gainesville show.

I wish I could have seen the Heartbreakers play with Bob.

The fire a Tom's house was told so well. It was very touching. It was interesting to hear Adria Petty talk about it. Poor little girl. It was cool of Annie Leonix to think to buy the family clothes.

Patty Smith had hairy arm pits....eeeeeww!

Free Fallin' on the SNL show sure looks different when you watch Howie, Stan and Benmont. They were not happy....then the video cuts to 1995 with Steve Ferrone playing the drums....what a difference! Steve likes the song.

No matter what changed over the years, Mike Campbell was by Tom's side for everything. No matter how mad Benmont got, he would never, ever walk away.

Stan brought in Scott. Hummmm! Scott really did seem to be thrilled to be there. I wonder what makes him so grumpy sometimes. He seemed very happy in the interview.

Sad about Into The Great Wide Open. I really loved that album. It's too bad they couldn't embrace it. There were some really good songs there. But I understand why they were all so hurt.

It was cool to see Johnny Depp. He was so young!

Bravo to Tom for speaking up for Roger. It was very cool to see Tom in action and his respect for Roger. Those two young men looked like fools.

I liked She's the One. There were several good songs on that album and I wish Tom wouldn't dismiss it.

I love MJ in Mike's living room.

I can't believe they played the Viper Room. That stage is so TINY!! I want to see more footage of that show!

It really sucks the way it ended with Stan. He made a huge contribution to the band over the years and he should be proud of it. I wish Stan had done the interview. It's just sad.

Dave Grohl was so funny! It was a riot seeing them play with him. He's like Animal! I loved his stories. "What does he want me for? Why doesn't he get a good drummer?" :003:

I miss Stan but I love Steve Ferrone. He is such an elegant man.

I LOVE LOST HIGHWAY!! Now, THAT's good country music!

Some of the footage seemed grainy to me. I can understand the older films but High Grass Dogs should not have been grainy. It wasn't that long ago.

The Howie stuff was so sad. Benmont had the perfect example of Howie's incredible voice in Swingin'.

Ron is so handsome and sweet. I loved all the air time he got. It was great that he was able to step right in there and he's ok with it. Scott..."Ron was a gift from heaven."

During Big Weekend Mike flashed on the screen and I looked over at Danny and said....Mongrel. hahahaha! I love that look! The beard, the dreads...everything! Mike is the coolest! It was wonderful to hear all of his stories. They should have played Big Weekend on tour.

I loved hearing the crowd sing I Won't Back Down and Learning to Fly at the top of their lungs. What a feeling that must be for the band.

Benmont yelling at everyone was so funny!

I loved this movie so much. I think it was very well done. Sure, we aleady knew most of the story but it's so cool to see it all in order by album. It's like going on their trip. Great job!

I'm really looking forward to that book, if it ever comes out!

^ seriously Sharon - if we can watch Shawshank for the millionth time I think this opus is good for at least a few thousand more! It's been what, three days since I saw it and I am just dying to rewatch and see what I pick up this time! :)

More random thoughts -

I thought it was cool that Adria decided to appear, I'm sure that was her choice and that will be something she'll always have to look back on. Thought it was touching that, during the fire, when she couldn't reach anyone she immediately called Benmont... that really drove home how much of a family these guys really are.

Nice also how they slid Dana in there as an obviously huge part of his current happiness without getting too much into it personally. A few well-placed shots, the smiles... said it without having to go into it. Similarly, there was very little if any mention about the other guy's families, which I imagine could be a story in itself... being on the periphery of this whole trip.

and that smile on Scott! Heavenly!!!!!

I would like to know more, not specifically about Jane, but about all of the families - how the heck it works when your husband/father is on the road all that time, when the other spouses/girlfriends came into the picture, heck I don't really know who is or isn't married! I can't imagine it is at all easy. But as I said earlier, that's a whole other story which I would have been surprised if they addressed.

This is surreal. I won´t believe that this movie exists till I saw it in its complete 4 hours. I´d probably still not believe that it really exists and that I just saw it. It seems too good to be true.

It´s stupid, but for some reason I´m afraid that I´ll never get to see it. Nothing´s just going right.
Whatever comes, before I´ll die I WANNA WATCH THIS MOVIE!!! lol

I´m glad for those of you who were able to go to the theatre and who already got their DVDs. But when I read all the great reviews, I think, damn! lol Me too, please. :/
You guys are so lucky. I haven´t even ordered it. Well I did, but I read on the site where I ordered it that the DVD Set is sold out. They didn´t even send me a mail to inform me about it. I´m so angry and sad. I don´t know where I should buy it now. Does anyone know if they´ll offer it in shops in Germany? Surely not, lol. I get the feeling it will take months till I´m able to see it. I was planning to watch in on my birthday, but I think I can forget that. Chistmas will stay it December and not move to October I guess, lol.

I also have the strange feeling that after this amazing release, I don´t know, I get the feeling that they won´t tour anymore. They´ll perform again, yes, but a tour? :095: Not to mention a tour in EUROPE. :095: Oh no. :085: The thought of it brings me really down. Hmm, maybe I´m just too pessimistic about everything.
Sorry, this was not one of my happiest posts, but I just had to write how I feel.

I’ve enjoyed reading everyone’s feedback. Marion summed it up very well. I loved everything about this documentary. I can’t imagine how hard it must’ve been to edit this. I’d love to have every bit of film that was edited out!

One of the most poignant parts of this documentary for me was Tom describing his rocky relationship with his father. How sad that this sweet mild-mannered little boy was abused and rejected by his father, based on a lack of 'perceived' macho interests. It’s not only Tom’s loss, it’s his father’s loss that he didn’t see the wonderful qualities in his son and nurture them instead of trying to beat them out of him. That’s probably why Tom’s got a bit of a hard edge. That kind of pain is deeply ingrained and he could’ve understandably succumbed to dealing with it in a very detrimental way. His mother sounds like an angel and an incredible woman. I credit Tom with being able to overcome a lot of huge personal and professional obstacles and accomplishing the degree of success that he’s achieved. He’s a huge inspiration on many levels and he’s well deserving of all the success and happiness he’s enjoying.

I was so inspired during the segment when Tom was speaking up for Roger to those record company guys. He’s definitely got a pair!!! :045:

Could Mike Campbell be any sweeter? When he smiles….wow…he can just light up a room! He just seems so downright genuinely nice too. And thank God Tom talked him into joining the band and not the Army!!! Tom describing how they met was both touching and funny “and suddenly, we weren’t looking at the drummer anymore”. Too bad Mike stopped wearing shorts though…loved that leggy shot! Something that struck me was Tom saying that Mike played as good back then as he does now….I mean, it is obvious, but it was cool to hear him say it. I got a strong sense of the very special and tight bond those two have, and it was evident very early in their relationship when Tom asked Mike to stay with him when Mudcrutch split up. Tom obviously knew instinctively, that he not only had an extremely talented musician in Mike, but a devoted and loyal friend and partner.

Regarding Mudcrutch….they were very good...I’m glad Tom’s re-uniting them!

How cool that Mike and Benmont just came into Tom’s life at the right time…. such a perfect fit! Then adding Ron and Stan and voila….one of the best band’s in the world is born! Lucky them and lucky us!

Ron is a real sweetie too! I like all the band members, past and present.

When Tom, Mike and Benmont spoke about losing Howie, their heartrending feelings were palpable. How hard that must’ve been on all of them.

I can’t imagine how Tom was able to keep it together, both artistically and personally, while fighting the record company lawsuits. Kudo’s to him and the band for not caving.

Benmont sounding off at rehearsal and Tom chiding him about being reserved at expressing his feelings….LOL!!!

I can’t remember exactly how Bemont put it, but he was referring to society placing so much importance on celebrities and the ridiculous fascination the media has with exposing their personal lives, rather than focusing on real talent and I couldn’t agree more!

LMAO when Tom was describing the hash incident going through Customs in Germany!!! Ron sure ripped off some real mean bass while strung out on that stuff! Wow!

I loved seeing the band backing Dylan….wow!!!

I am so grateful for their music. They are all just a great bunch of guys, very humble, very genuine, very inspiring and the most talented of musicians….how amazing that they’ve kept it together for more than 30 years, staying true to the music, and surviving so many obstacles that would’ve crumbled most. It speaks volumes about their character. I hope they carry on for many more years and I am so happy they've achieved recognition for their enormous contribution to music!

So far i've watched it up to 1981. So far so good. I too wish Stan, would've been seen today. Alot has went down since his interviews, and maybe his comments or views have mellowed with time. who knows. Wish that instead of a cd, the 4th disc would've been a dvd with complete performances of some of the live sets. One thing for me, as a musician, a theme runs through it. That it is so important who you wind up making music together with. If Tom would've met the guys I had, he'd be sitting somewhere, probably working a 9 to 5 job. He's lucky that he found Mike and Ben and then later Ron and Stan. And that all of them had the drive to do originals and not want to play it safe and be a cover band. I can't wait to watch some more of it tonight. I keep stopping to check out the guitars and amps !

Well finsihed disc one last night. I wish I could watch it in one straight viewing, but i've been working 12-14 hrs a day, plus my 2 little boys to care for (2 &3) who like Tom Petty but at this point prefer Jonny Quest !

It seems that they tilted the picture for Stan's interviews, I'll have to watch the original to see if it was like that, I can't remember. I wonder does Tom's hand hurts him still, as my wife has had her foot repaired from a car accident over 20 years ago, and sometimes its still hurts. I have watched it enough times that now reading the book, I recognize word for word what was in the movie. LOL Some of the text in the book is not in the movie so I am thinking we are reading the parts that were edited out of the movie for times sake. Pretty cool!

Peace

Awww, Darian came....how cool!

I bought it on eBay last Monday and I hope everything is going right. I doubt that a little now. I´m even afraid now that the one I bought is a copy and hell I´m confused, lol. It has the colored cover but there are several more sets on eBay now with the red cover. And they are all cheaper than the one I´ve bought. :095: What did you guys pay for the set? And what´s with the cover? I thought the book has the red cover.

well I finished disc 2 and am now watching the concert.
but i have some questions that maybe somebody here has heard the answer.
1. Was Stan asked to contribute ? Did he okay the old interview from the disney show to be used ? or had no say in the matter.
2. Wouldn't it had been a gas had Stan came out at the concert and played on a few numbers ? ( I'd rather had seen that than Stevie ).
3. I wish the bonus disc would've been complete performances of the songs from different tv shows. ( i know rights and all would make this impossible, just would've been nice. )
4. So sad about Howie, you wonder what would have happend had he'd stayed with Del Shannon, would he never had had the $ to get on heroin ?
Over all its a great movie. But does any of the other guys have wives, kids, divorces ? I really don't know anything more about the heartbreakers after this movie.
Plus alot of the stories that Tom told, he had already told in the book "conversations with Tom Petty". I do wish that they had put out more songs/cd's in the 30 year period. But I grew up in the era of the early beatles, etc. When an artist goes 5 years between Cd's , well thats the whole beatle era. Like jumping from please, please, me to abbey rd. ! Maybe thats what people like,
I don;t know. anyway Peace.

From what Kelly said when she went to the NYFF premier, Peter B told the audience in a Q&A session that Stan was approached but didn't want to be a part of this documentary, so I guess that is why they used the old footage.

Yes, the Heartbreakers have wives, ex's, girlfriends and kids.

A few of us now have dared to say (and I'm one of them) ..that we really didn't learn anything new at all from the movie. It's nice to have it, a bit more TP memorabelia to keep but I can't help but say I was a little disappointed. It was just pretty much everything I already knew. Plus I'd even seen a great deal of the interviews and footage several times before. I had been hoping for something new and some different news. Maybe I just expect too much. I guess too, with me being in my 50's and having been a fan since the beginning it's hard to surprise me with anything that I don't already know about this band. The movie had got so much hype I don't know, just felt a little let down.

Pettylicious81
11-01-2007, 10:58 AM
Maybe, in the possible future they'll include some more stuff but seeing as how long the bands career has spanned and the extra possible things they could include, it's hard to break down a long career into such a short amount of footage. Who knows what could happen in the future...might turn it into something similar to the Beatles Anthology.

When you hear that it´s a 4 hour documentary, of course you do expect much, but I´ve tried from the beginning to not expect too much. As you said, it´s hard to surprise those long-time fans who collect everything. I´m still very excited about the movie, but I know there´ll be a lot stuff in it I already know.
But when you think about it, what more are we expecting? We´ll never get to see them playing naked or at least in their underwear, lol. I think I´ll be satisfied when I can watch those interviews which I probably already know in great quality.

MJ when you finally get the set and sit down to watch it I think you will enjoy this very very much. Yes there's a lot of stuff in there that we all know but frankly I just loved it. I really really really LOVED it!!! LOL. I did not know as much as others so there was more for me to discover and yeah that helps. Enjoyed Tom's perspective on so many things. And as I have only heard the others speak just once before from a video of the 2002 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame I especially enjoyed seeing and hearing Mike Benmont Stan and Ron. That was so wonderful. And then there's Howie. That was beautiful. What a sweetheart.

I enjoyed it because it was a tribute to them. It isn't about me, it's about them and it was glorious to see a film that pays such respect to all their hard work, their persistance and their struggle to not let it fall apart for any reason.

I could be wrong but I really do think you will be thrilled.

MJ§LastDance
11-01-2007, 02:46 PM
^ Oh, sure I will be thrilled, lol. No question there. I just have to remind myself of how it was like when I watched the trailer. I will totally go nuts! I´m even not sure if I´ll outlive this. I can´t understand why you all are still alive or at least so calmed down, lol!
I´m very easily impressed when it comes to Tom so it´s always exciting to watch something about him, I would never get bored of that man and his crew. :003:
So I don´t mind to watch some things I know again. It was obvious that there´ll be a lot stuff in it that we know. It´s also made for people who don´t know anything about them and not just for us die-hard fans. :003:
But hey, 4 hours and even more with TPATHB, I can´t complain.
I can think of several things that I wish are in that movie, but I´m pretty sure they´re not. In 4 hours not everything can be shown and there´ll always be questions that stay open.
