WooHoo!!!!!! I love it when Phil and Matt drum together. (I am assuming it will be Phil and Matt, but who knows. Those drummers are sneaky!)
Major Reno rode up to Colonel Custer on the eve of the Little Big Horn massacre and said, "Colonel, there's evidence of a large number of Indians over the ridge. I don't like the sound of those drums."
From over the ridge came a loud cry, "He's not our regular drummer!"
;)
Well, it was either that joke, or this one......
An anthropologist decides to investigate the natives of a far-flung tropical island. He flew there, found a guide with a canoe to take him up the river to the remote site where he would make his collections. About noon on the second day of travel up the river they began to hear drums. Being a city boy by nature, the anthropologist was disturbed by this. He asked the guide, "What are those drums?"
The guide turned to him and said "Drums OK, but VERY BAD when they stop."
Then, after some hours, the drums suddenly stopped! This hit the anthropologist like a ton of bricks, and he yelled at the guide: "The Drums have stopped, what happens now?"
The guide crouched down, covered his head with his hands and said, "Bass solo".

Its funny as hell the way Phil and Matt share some of the drums sometimes. The first time I remember seeing them play together was at Joe's Joint and I can still picture them smiling and laughing at the back of the stage - each periodically taking swipes at the other's cymbals.

Oooohhh I am getting excited! So here is how it is shaking out for Elysa and I. In our wedding vows we promised each other to always keep music and art in our lives... Soooo to celebrate our 3rd anniversary (Aug 19th!) I am surprising Elysa with a trip to Vegas to see "LOVE" at the Mirage on Thursday and then Friday we swing into LA to see the "Dirty Knobs" at the Joint!!! I can not think of any better way to celebrate our anniversary, can you? Of course we will get to visit our family and friends over the rest of the weekend... BUT most importantly we are finally going to get officially "Knobbed"!!!! :003:

Does she like live rock and roll? Unless she hates it, you ought to bring her out to CA some time for a Knobs gig. At least that sure seems to be something Athena and I enjoy doing together - going to see live music.
We have been married since '91 and we have to stay together now because it would be too difficult to split the memorabilia up ;) LOL!

Yes! It was such a great song! Jason went deep for the vocals, just like Iron Butterfly, lol. Jason also brought out this beautiful guitar he bought for this song. I don't know the whole story on the history of this guitar, but it's pretty. I'm sure Relic and all the other shutterbugs are working on their pictures to post. I can't wait!!
It was so great to see Mike playing keyboard. I haven't seen that since 2002 at the Coach House.
They had two special guests playing with them tonight. Mr. Phil Jones and Mr. Andrew Gold. I bet a few of you can guess the big hit song that Mr. Gold had back in the day.

Wow that was a blast! We are going to be grinning from ear to ear for a while to come after that performance tonight!
Jason shared a little about that guitar with me - I learned it is from Italy, but not a lot seems to be known about it except that it has wonderful tone! Especially for that song.
Jason mentioned that he was horse-trading guitars and had traded one in and got another, and had some 'credit' left over - so he looked for the most unusual guitar he could find to surprise Mike and ended up with the Italian guitar :)
Wow! I just saw the Dirty Knobs play In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida!!!! So Cool!
(pinching self) Did that really happen?!?!?!?!?!?
I have a lot of photos of the gig to go thru - too many to process tonight - but I couldn't resist getting a couple ready to post, so here you are from the beginning of the gig:

Mike Campbell, Matt Laug and Phil Jones They are all laughing because Mike just broke a string in the middle of the first song - 'Goldfinger' and it is still hanging from the guitar.
Well, maybe Mike's expression is one of 'nuts!' - his guitar tech handed him another guitar later on, but until then he just soldiered on using 5 strings LOL!

nurk, I don't know yet- the lighting on that side of the stage was very tricky. Will have to check all the shots carefully.
If I remember correctly Jason said he didn't know much about the guitar. A mystery axe.
The shape was a little like a flying vee, but maybe a little more blunt - like an Italian pickle fork! ;)

An update on Jason's guitar -
I am told it was made in Italy between 1967 and 1970 and is called an 'EKO Rokes'. There is an Italian band named after the guitar apparently, so there must be at least a few other folks who also think it sounds good :)

ok relic, eko in italy made vox guitars after they stopped making them in england. eko now has a reissue of the guitar jason played.

Looks like it has flecks of white, so it could be a form of Obsidian. FWIW, obsidian is said to have the following properties:
-honesty, sincerity & truth
-brings out your warrior spirit and reclaims forgotten abilities within yourself
-help prevent negative energies from attacking & keep thoughts from turning negative
-reflect your flaws & provide insight into changing the flaws
-helpful to those in 12 Step programs as a powerful tool of change, aiding your desire to alter behavior
and that's one large chunk of obsidian (err, obsidian talisman, more likely) he's got there...

No kidding Liz - some great shots of the gig.
I am so happy to get to see the band perform live. There is simply nothing like live music - particularly when it is played from the heart by uncompromising artists who cherish everything about music.
In fact, events like this help to restore my faith in humanity.
Now you could say that is a lot to lay at the feet of these performers, and maybe you'd be right, but even so there is something remarkable going on at gigs like these, and how ever it might be described, it is worthy of celebration!
Thanks guys!!!!!

I dont know if anyone mentioned the Rick guitar Andrew had. I noticed it looked a little different - i.e. had three pickups - but there was some kind of glitch and he didn't end up playing it so I never got to hear the sound.
Did anyone get a photo of that guitar?
It looked like a Rick on steroids.

thanks relic. it looks like an old late 50's RIC 325 like lennon's original, but they didn't come with the bigsby B5 tailpiece. (2 pickups would make it at model 320 and they didn't make a 320 back then). but at that time they had the 'toaster' pick ups like in this pix. the pickguard seems like the original single layer which at that time would be gold in color, not white. it also has 1 toggle switch and 4 knobs like the originals. today you get 5 knobs and a toggle switch. if this guitar is the small 3/4 size it's a modified RIC 325. if it's a full size guitar, it's a model 350. lennon's original was blond in color with an 'accent' tailpiece, which he had removed and replaced with the bigsby B5 vibrato tailpiece at a local shop in liverpool after he bought the guitar in germany, he also had it painted black. i have 2 of these ric's in 3/4 size, my original 60's 325 in fire-glo (red sunburst) with the original 'accent tailpiece' and a black 1980 model 320 (2 pickups) without a vibrato tailpiece. all in all, this looks like an original RIC that had the bigsby added. i'd like to know if it's full size or a 3/4 size. i'd also love to see a close up of the headstock, because where "made in america" is located gives you a clue as to when this guitar was made. i'd also like to know if the ric logo on the headstock is just plain white or gold and carved out or if the whole thing is covered in a clear smooth finish. btw, if you have 1 of these guitars and want to add a bigsby, get the B5, not the B500. the B5 is about $200 and made in the USA. the B500 is about $100 and made somewhere in china or somewhere in the east. thanks for the pix, keep them coming. oh, i forgot to mention, if you have a model 320 and are thinking of adding the bigsby, DON'T. ric doesn't make a 320 anymore and the price on these guitars is going up pretty fast, so don't do anything to it yet, you could be destroying a classic that could be worth some money some day. who knows, maybe Mike is looking for one....lol.

i forgot to mention another thing, these guitars came with or without an "F" hole and you can also tell their age by that position!. here's a clue, if you hold the guitar upright with the neck straight up, what position is the "F" hole pointing to? any idea's before i post the answer? the cutaways on this guitar are definitely from a 325, 320 or 350. the only other model that comes close is a 330. AND the 4 knobs on this guitar are NOT the original brown and gold knobs on the original RICS!!!!

08-29-2009, 02:04 PM
I have no idea Nurk! I'm already swimming in the info you posted, but all this talk of f-holes is getting me hot. (What are you wearing?) ;)
As for the size of the guitar, if it was 3/4 then the full size must be giant because it seemed like an enormous guitar to me and that is what first caught my eye. I knew it was a RIC right when I saw it, and the three toaster pickups all in a row caught my attention.
I suspected it had to be something pretty special. Maybe we will get to actually hear it some day LOL! It was like a jet fighter on static display at an airshow - you really want to see them fly!

08-29-2009, 02:37 PM
well steve, if it's full size, it's a 350 and then andrew made changes to it. i'd still like to see the headstock and where "made in america" is located. i'd like to mention more about "F holes", but then none of us would get anything done!! run Athena run, don't look back!!! have a great day everyone, be back after a fried chicken dinner!

08-30-2009, 01:35 AM
i messed up on the 320, it does have 3 pickups. it doesn't have the tremolo arm like the 325., therefore 2 different model numbers. now back to the "F holes", holding the guitar straight up, if the f hole is in the 1 o'clock position, it's an older ric. if it's in the 2 o'clock position, it's a newer ric. as far as the nameplate on the headstock, if 'made in the usa' is placed at the bottom along the nut, it's an older ric. if 'made in the usa' is directly under 'rickenbacker' it's a newer model. the older ric's also have the nameplate covered in clear plastic for a smooth finish, the newer ones don't and you can actually feel the name rickenbacker.
