Lol! At first when I looked at this thread, I guess because I saw that Mudcrutch had posted it, my brain twisted it and was telling me that Mudcrutch (the band) was playing in Yucaipa.....I was so excited!! But this is for the Dirty Knobs?.... don't get me wrong... still excited... but I had a bit of a brain freeze for a moment. ;) Looks like some fun venues..

Is Angels Roadhouse the former Crossroads? YIKES! I remember that place well, hahahaha. Knobs played there last in May of 2002. Interesting night to say the least.

Wow! Those sound like some interesting venues. I'm going to try and make it, but I'm not sure. March is going to be such a busy month for me.

If Angels is the former Crossroads, it's 21 years and over, not sure about the other venue.

Marion
02-28-2009, 03:49 PM
That's great Brandon! Go for it. I know you've been wanting to see them for a long time and a double header is perfect.

If Angels is Crossroads....I'm not sure we should have been there or the band for that matter. haha! That was a rough place. It sure was fun though. Relic, I'm not sure they would appreciate your camera.

It's the first weekend of Spring. As long as the Hell's Angels don't show up you should be fine.

I don't think you can go into any "local" bar and start snapping shots without getting permission or I certainly don't suggest it.

Sounds like a blast.

So ladies do your leathers still fit?

02-28-2009, 04:36 PM

This sounds like a fun weekend! Have fun if you can make it. (Brandon, I can't wait to hear your review after your first Knobbin'!)

FWIW I am contacting both venues to get a tentative OK for photography. Obviously the artists have to give the final OK.

Hmmm, I hear bikers are partial to redheads. Gonna miss Athena.

;)

NOTE: Make sure you go to the place in MENTONE and not the place with the same name in Redlands on Friday night.

I just called the wrong place asking about photography and the guy said it was a drive thru place and he really didn't think the Knobs were playing at the drive thru window. I told him he was probably right but you know how Mike is full of surprises! LOL!

It's the first weekend of Spring. As long as the Hell's Angels don't show up you should be fine.

Under No Circumstances should anyone attempt to repeat Johnny Depp's motorcycle move from the TP&HB 'Into the great wide open' video.

That would be BAD.

Yeah - dittoing what Ames said, I think we ran into problems at Crossroads when we tried to photograph each other - pointing the camera at the band was not a problem. It was the patrons of the bar who did not wish to be in the background of our photos :)

The fake country place shouldn't be a problem. I doubt you'll see a real cowboy there.

03-02-2009, 09:31 PM
If Steve has permission from the band(s) and the venue to take pictures of the band(s) as usual, I think it'll be okay, just not get any bikers in a shot - which isn't likely anyway - unless you have their permission . I think it will be obvious that he's there for the band.

I just called the Millcreek Inn, and fwiw, they recommend reservations. (Made ours for 8 pm)

If you go to the menu page
http://www.millcreekcattlecompany.com/diamond_jims.php
and scroll down a little, you'll see the Banquet Hall, with the stage at the far end. Scroll further past the gift baskets and there's a shot of the stage.

Looks like the stage is at table level. (Hmmm, like a guy could turn an amp up to 11 and just - oh nevermind...)

So, I called Angels and I asked about reservations or tickets and I was told that they were going to be selling tickets at the door for the Knobs.

On their site it says that Romeo Delta, Salemhouse, and Mad Mad Mascare(?) is going to be opening!!!

I'm so excited I'm exploding! I was really hoping to see Romeo Delta yaaayyyyyy!!

I didn't notice the flyer yesterday, maybe they put it up since then, or I'm just not very observant, or maybe it's the retinal scarring from looking at their myspace page.

They ought to play The Palms, eh?

LOL Weird Monkey. You know about The Palms? And I thought Pappy & Harriet's wasn't appropriate enough (even though Robert Plant and Lucinda Williams - and many others have graced that place).

You know, I was a bit worried about bikers when I went to see TPATH at Sturgis a few years ago. Turned out many of them (I'd say the majority these days) are very nice people. However, I won't vouch for folks in San Bernardino/Redlands area who call themselves bikers. Hopefully, Angel's has come up in the world since the last time the Knobs played there? Just don't breath the air in the Inland Empire. God knows what you might be lacing your lungs with...

If anything, perhaps Mike and the boys are choosing to come our way because it is one of those places on the planet that needs some serious loving and true rock & roll.

And I do think the folks here at the farm who did go to the Roadhouse years ago and had problems taking photos were probably right. It wasn't the band that people were worried got photographed....

At the very least, as far as I know, Angel's doesn't store porta potties next door like the club the band used to play in Bakersfield. Look at the brighter side...

weird monkey
03-03-2009, 08:39 PM
The Palms would be perfect.

Besides, Thom Merrick is hot.

brandonwood20

It looks like there is another opening band on Angels Roadhouse's flyer. So now it's:
Romeo Delta (awesome)
Salem House
Mad Mad Masacre?
and Vedda

Does this happen a lot? 4 other bands before the Knobs...? Will DK get to play for a long time???

I mean I'm still coming either way. Just curious..

surfnburn

Didn't we get some practice at the country bar thang at Mavericks? I am sooo happy you are coming to protect us Susie! Denise better come too! Instead of "bouncers", "bouncy Tiggers"!!!!

It is looking more and more like doing both shows we might get to see the most of the band. Although, remember, at Mavericks the Knobs did an extra set at the end of that full day of Zevon musicians. Has anyone checked to see what time the first band does go onstage at Angel's?

Although, once again must refer to Vinny's in Bakersfield and the worst ever opening band for DK (in my limited experience-no doubt others might suggest differently). "Soul Damage". Angel's lineup has to be better...even if the air might be less comforting.

How do they do it? I swore I was done for good. No more driving into LA. Instead, they opt to come out to the wasteland?

weird monkey
03-05-2009, 06:39 PM
The start time at Angels is 8 pm, it says here on their myspace page. I'd give the 3 opening bands about 2 1/2 hours to wrap things up, assuming RD comes on right before the DKs. So I suppose getting there around 10 pm would be ample time?

:) I like to think it was my incessant whining that had something to do with their appearance out this way, but mostly I'm just happy that they're coming, no matter the reason.

My Mavericks in Santa Ynez? It's a tame place :) (but you can have a lot of fun there) :pYes, your Mavericks in Santa Ynez. Were you there for the Warren Zevon Cancer benefit the Knobs helped with a couple years ago? Beautiful venue. Noticed that the photos of the Mill Creek Cattle Company in Mentone where the band will be playing this Friday night bears a striking resemblance to Mavericks.

Hoping all the Farmers and local friends (because I have personally told as many TPATH fans as I know of here in the area) will be there for both shows Friday and Saturday night. Put my heart into spreading the word...

I guess I'll be the first to post and say the show last night at Mill Creek was outstanding! I think anyone who can make the drive tonight should, but a fair warning that the Knobs didn't go on until about 11:30pm because of all the bands beforehand. I got home around 3am. It was a really fun evening and so great to see Weird Monkey and her husband and Brandonwood (and Pettyphile?) Relic, etc. Everybody was so nice and I had such a great time. Best Show Evar! It was really great and I too wish we had a setlist - I would say about half were Beatles' tunes, or close to it. I knew them all, but the only one I really remember that I hadn't that heard the band play before was She Said She Said, because also Tom spun it on Buried Treasure this week. Then there was Working Class Hero, and the birthday boy, Swampfox, sang Hey Bulldog.

It was great to meet some new folks and see some I'd met before. It's too bad more people couldn't make it, the guys really played their hearts out as always, but the crowd had thinned out, probably because it got so late. Not that I'm complaining, because I hate crowds my self.

Brandon and I got to meet Mike and Jason for the first time (thanks to SquareOne and Pettyphile), who were both very gracious, and the last thing the Apeman said as he left was something to the effect of, "I'm just a monkey, that's all I am", which I naturally found humorous. :)

My satellite connection is lagging worse than usual, but I managed to upload a few pictures:

So fun - and I meant to say it was great to meet Athena too - all the farmers - really nice people! I took about 300,000 pictures but don't think they'll do justice to what Relic and WM took - but I'll post some if I can. They really did play their hearts out, it's the best way to put it. It was so great to watch. I asked the woman standing next to me if I was in her way and she said "nope, all I want to see is hands on guitars" and man....when it was over I turned to her and just said "that was some amazing hands on guitars!". sigh... I think I've turned into a DK junkie. I have to go through withdrawals now. Hope everyone has a great time tonight!

nurktwin
03-21-2009, 02:26 PM
thank you for the pictures. i found 1 or 2 really interesting. the ric that mike is playing has to be a homemade job, cuz i've NEVER seen a ric like that, let alone be released to the public. i'll post the pix below after i say what i think and you can look at the pix in 1 post. at 1st glance, i thought it was a harrison 360/12, but that quickly faded away, because the guitar and neck have no white binding. so it must be a ric 330 6 string, cuz i don't see anything on the headstock that even comes close to being a 12 string. this guitar has a 'cats eye' soundhole and can't be confused with the model 1996 and 1997 that were exported to england in the 60's and also called the "rose morris" models, because they had "F" holes and not cats eyes. this model also has the original toaster pickups and the original setup for 4 knobs and 1 toggle switch, not the current 5 knobs and 1 toggle switch. and most amazing of all, is that this guitar has the trapese tail piece with a bigsby tailpiece!!!!!!!!! that's amazing in itself.

so it must be a ric 330 6 string

Correct! 1960 Fireglo 330... Definitely 6 strings. He used this guitar on a few songs on the Soundstage DVD. It would have been really cool to see that guitar live last night. doh!

Very nice reviews and pictures! Wow, 11:30, that's late. Sounds like a really great show. I hope someone can remember more of what they played. Glad you guys got to meet Mike and Ape. That is so exciting! I know Brandon must be on cloud nine for his first Knobbin! Can't wait to hear his story. Looking forward to more pictures too.

Have fun tonight for those who can make it back. You all are gonna be high for a couple of weeks!

thank you for the pictures. i found 1 or 2 really interesting. the ric that mike is playing has to be a homemade job, cuz i've NEVER seen a ric like that, let alone be released to the public. i'll post the pix below after i say what i think and you can look at the pix in 1 post. at 1st glance, i thought it was a harrison 360/12, but that quickly faded away, because the guitar and neck have no white binding. so it must be a ric 330 6 string, cuz i don't see anything on the headstock that even comes close to being a 12 string. this guitar has a 'cats eye' soundhole and can't be confused with the model 1996 and 1997 that were exported to england in the 60's and also called the "rose morris" models, because they had "F" holes and not cats eyes. this model also has the original toaster pickups and the original setup for 4 knobs and 1 toggle switch, not the current 5 knobs and 1 toggle switch. and most amazing of all, is that this guitar has the trapese tail piece with a bigsby tailpiece!!!!!!!!! that's amazing in itself.

Show-off! :p I have no idea what you are talking about but it sounds good LOL! The only instrument I know anything about is a piano.

This one's for you nurk! And it sounds like seltaeb is a guitar fan too.
http://www.mudcrutch.com/photos/data/521/Close-lge.jpg

Good thing Mike had his nails done before the show. :p
Whatever it's heritage, that guitar's been around. It wasn't quite as beat up as the famous telecaster*, but it has some battle scars and a pretty grimy fretboard. Those white specks on the body aren't photo flaws or flash reflections - they are chips.

I can't wait to see other people's pictures. There were lots of shutterbugs up front. It's been awhile since I used the 'big camera', so it took awhile before I got the settings right. I expect we won't hear Brandon's story until he gets back to his computer in Montana - but he's getting another Knobbin' tonght!

Edit: I meant Broadcaster. D'oh!

I took this one early as I was fooling with camera settings, so it's not very good, but I like the juxtaposition between Mike and the dog:

Some songs I know they did last night at Mill Creek are:

Minimum Wage, Humdinger, Balls Off, Working Class Hero/Hide Your Love, Shake These Blues, She Said She Said, Hey Bulldog, Soothe Me (so cool!) I'm pretty sure the did So Tired - I'll try to think of more...

Minimum Wage, Humdinger, Balls Off, Working Class Hero/Hide Your Love, Shake These Blues, She Said She Said, Hey Bulldog, Soothe Me (so cool!) I'm pretty sure the did So Tired - I'll try to think of more...

I believe they started with Feed the Snake, then Never Gonna Own Me (Bye Bye Bye), and then Humdinger. And sometime later they played Hey, Bo Diddley, then segued into another blues standard. Jason sang Love Minus Zero.

I think the third Beatles song after Working Class Hero and Hide Your Love was I'm So Tired. I know they did three in a row some where. That hour and a half went by in a flash.

Square One, I am looking forward to seeing some of your pictures, the previews in the camera looked great. I know you got some special ones I hope you can share.

I was bummed not being able to go last night, but my husband didn't remember to tell me until on the way home Friday night (2:30 am Saturday actually) that we had a funeral to go to Saturday afternoon, and then out of the blue, my uncle called from Palm Springs (I had no idea they were in the area) later Saturday and told me they are coming up the hill Monday to visit, so I thought maybe I should stay home so I could get ready for them on Sunday. I was still debating about it in the evening and my husband didn't tell me, but told someone else on the phone, that he was staying home (thanks, sweetie :012:) Anyway, I fell asleep at 10:30 when I would have just been arriving at the bar if I'd gone.

Well folks, after my near-death experience driving home from the shows, I have to say that it was totally worth it. I would do it again in a heartbeat. And I probably will!

Okay, fess up. What happened on your drive? Did you run into the gale winds we have been having?

brandonwood20
03-24-2009, 03:04 PM
Ok, so now that I've set up all this suspense, I will tell you my story. Really it's not that exciting. I hope you all aren't dissapointed.

I had great roads 90% of the time during my 37 hours on the road. The other 10% was a little less than great. At the "Welcome To Montana" sign I ran into a blizzard. For awhile the road was clear and it was just snowing really really hard. I had to slow way down to see what was going on.

Then the fun started. 8+ inches of snow in the passing lane and deep ruts of snow and ice in the slow lane. Needless to say my little car was getting thrown around like Gilligans Ship! Wind, snow, and darkness settled around me and I joined a car "train" (or caravan) and we proceeded at 30 miles an hour.

I was at the rear of the caravan when a semi truck, apparently unable to slow down in the ice, passed us in the 8 inches of snow. Depositing a fair share of it on my car. Infact, it felt like i had hit the semi truck! So much snow flew up onto my car that it took 7 swipes with my wipers to get the windshield clear....

weird monkey
03-24-2009, 03:08 PM

brandonwood20
03-24-2009, 03:11 PM
The 7 swipes amounted to what seemed like 5 minutes that I could not see anything! I didn't know if I was on a bridge or a curve or if the cars in front of me stopped. I thought I was done for.

I few miles down the road (and lots of screaming on my part) I see the semi jack-kniffed in the median and a car had come across the median coming from the other way and went across our lanes, off the highway, and through the fence on the other side.

Finally, graciously, I made it the 30 miles (at 30 miles an hour) to a town with a hotel. I tell myself "that's it. You've had enough. You're nerves are shot and you have been driving for 14 hours" (I woke up at 4am on Sunday to begin my trip.) So, I pulled off.

Guess what I did then? I got BACK ON THE HIGHWAY! WHY? I scream to myself. HOW CAN YOU BE SO DUMB? I say. I about slid off the on ramp. In near tears I call my wife to ask how she let herself marry someone so stupid and she tells me I have 60 miles till the next hotel. The snow was too deep to turn around in and I wanted to cry...

brandonwood20
03-24-2009, 03:13 PM
But I made it. 60 miles in 2 1/2 hours. Then it started raining and all was well. Or at least better.

I would gladly do 90% of the trip all over again. That last 10% though....

And the very hot Romeo Delta! Thanks again Marcia! That background mural just kills me. You have to give a double take to find the real people.

I don't know if there's gonna be any more pictures, but my favorite so far is the "Ape Guitar Grip!"
http://www.deweil.com/steve/2163.jpg

I have only been to a few recent shows, but I really think Jason was hamming it up for all the shutterbugs last weekend, which was fun. My husband thanked him after the show, and he replied, "yeah, it was just GREAT, wasn't it?" He was so effusive!

angelic_22

Jason was in rare form :)

I have some shots of Matt I need to process - he was behind the drum kit at Angel's and the mural on the wall behind him showed Johnny Cash.

The way things lined up Johnny's collar and shirt ended up looking like a crown on Matt's head.

Matt's face is mostly obstructed in the photos and I have not done anything with them for that reason but maybe its worth a second look.

Still cant get over how beautiful Mike's Rick guitar is. What is also amazing is how that guitar took everything Mike threw at it and kept on going. I mean, Mike was just wailing on that thing. Especially during 'Feed the Snake'.

Jason's lead in that song is really beautiful. A counterpoise to Mike's lead at the beginning of the song that establishes the melody - Jason's lead contrasts and amplifies the theme, until the end when Mike and Jason's parts converge together.

I think I first heard the song at Cozy's. 'They are just setting levels' someone said. LOL!

They can set levels that way any time they want :)

The Dirty Knob's level setting is better than most band's main act!

I can't remember what song it was but does anyone remember on Friday night Mike running into the mic stand while he was playing? He was soooo into it that I think he lost his footing for a second and bonked his head - I held my breath and he just kept right on going. It was awesome! ;)

I am going to try and put some pictures up - WM showed me how, so I'll try later tonight.

Yes, I believe Mike apologized (tongue firmly in cheek) for making us listen to their 'sound check' during the first 2 songs that night. (And the Customer Service work shirt he had on said it all :003: )

And I do remember him walking into the mic Friday - because I expected to hear a very loud "Thunk", but didn't - the sound guy must have seen it coming. :)

And more pictures on the way! Yay! :026: Bring 'em!

Relic, your photos are always so beautiful. I'd love a copy of the solo shot of Mike in front of Jerry Garcia and Kurt Cobain at Angel's. Sure glad Athena figured out why the artists depicted were there....in homage to lost musicians.

Wonderful weekend. Very grateful they took the effort to come out our way. Was special when Mike told the crowd at Mill Creek it was worth the traffic and drive to play for them. After all, they did brave Friday rush hour out of LA to make it to that show. Still can't believe they played until 1:30am on Friday night (or Saturday morning) and even stayed after to talk to everyone.

Only wish more Knob fans had made it to Angel's. Room for all. Hopefully next time everyone will show up. (Even if it is nine years from now).

That mural is pretty wild.

I think this was taken during 'Humdinger' - that might be a clear glass slide on one of Mike's fingers. He's moving so fast its hard to make it out.

have you noticed the DK'S influence from past music? "loaded gun" is almost a copy from cheap tricks song "girlfriends", just the music, not the lyrics. "shake these blues"
is actually a blend of the yardbirds hits "shapes of things and i'm a man". "love minus zero" is actually a tom petty song that mike obviously helped write, and i can't think of the title right now, cuz i have cheap trick blasting out!!!! mike also plays a little riff in concert that was originally done by jimmy page from the led zep days. i'll try to get to those other songs today and post them, so you can listen and make up your own mind. in the mean time, put on some music and enjoy.

I heard Love Minus Zero many years ago, probably sometime in the late sixties or early seventies, sung by Scott Engel. I am pretty sure it is a Bob Dylan song originally.

Yes, Love Minus Zero/No Limit, is from Bringing It All Back Home (1965)

I love the way Jason sings it.
