Best of BG Archives Prints (http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/va/best-photos-of-bill-graham-archive/84.html?) Winterland Trivia Contest This Winterland show might never have happened had it not been for a faceted crystal ball on a string. Which show was it?
Answer: The first performance by the Band at Winterland, April 17, 1969
Bill Graham convinced the Band to play three days at San Francisco’s Winterland. A very sick Robbie Robertson fought fever, nausea and weakness with a posse of physicians brought to his hotel bedside in the days before the show -- all to no avail. Hours before the first performance, Graham hired a hypnotist who worked with Robbie with nothing but a faceted crystal on a string. In tune with the hypnotist on the side of the stage holding up a little crystal ball, Robbie was able to make it through the show.
