NOT SO PETTY

August 28, 2007 -- TOM Petty and the Heartbreakers earned a cool $1.7 million for just four hours of work this weekend. Friday night, Petty played at financier Leon Black's birthday party in East Hampton - where Mayor Bloomberg seemed to be having "a great time" - for a rumored $850,000 paycheck. The next night, the band earned the same amount to rock Hamptons Social @ Ross, where the crowd included Renée Zellweger, Calvin Klein, Paul McCartney, Mischa Barton, Ronald Perelman, Jimmy Buffett, Richard Gere and Carey Lowell, and Katie Lee Joel, who chatted up her husband Billy Joel's ex, Christie Brinkley.

^ Ames - that was just poor sentence construction, the band was paid $850,000, the mayor just had a "great
time." :)

and I get The Last DJ thing, but I saw the album as more of a nostalgia for the way things used to be across the board, concerts, being a kid, everything that has changed, untalented trampies on stage and all. Life is different than it was. I still think TPATH does so much better than the rest in this regard.

Ok guys - shoot me on this, but if I won the lottery and had enough money where big $$ was chump change, I'd book the band for a night and fly all of you in for one huge show... seriously I would. It would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The payout from this weekend surely went to all the band... want to guess what private medical insurance costs for these guys? It's not all Tom, they are all people with expenses, families etc... making a living. I so seriously do not have an issue with it, especially if it means they can continue to keep concert prices down for the rest of us. :)

Thanks Amylou... I wasn't sure if political funding thing...lol We don't want to go down that road...lol

I don't care if they do the occasional private gig as long as they play for us once in awhile. Shoot...if they want to go celebrate money with people, it's up to them...

Hmm....The Knobettes know that The Knobs play for the joy of it. I'm pretty sure it isn't for the money... (How much does the Viper Room pay? lol)

You know....I'm wondering if the dollar amounts in the article are gross or net. I think the promoters are getting a hunk of change, right?

Yeah....I thought the Last DJ was about how money has spoiled the music. "Untalented trampies" (LOL Amylou) get airplay because they're marketable and that's only reason their music is played, etc.

That's kind of how I feel. I can understand wanting the big payday that comes with these gigs, but that's ALL they seem to be doing this year. Would it be so difficult to do one or two shows for "great unwashed" after all the rehearsal, etc, they must have done for these Hamptons shows?

I am not opposed to the band making a quick buck. I think I'm just disappointed in Tom a little because it seems to go against everything he's always said. He's always stood up for his convictions and spoke his mind. He really got on a soapbox during the promotion of the Last DJ about the golden circle. He backed his songs when he got so much criticism and didn't apologize for them. Now it feels like he's catering to the people he was so down on for the big buck! WTF Tom?

C-line
08-28-2007, 10:40 PM
I have mixed feelings and I'm raising an eyebrow, but reserving judgment. We don't know why they did this, and they don't want us to know why. Maybe it was the money. Maybe someone owed someone a favor. Maybe it was a professional obligation, or some other reason we can't imagine. I believe when Tom makes such decisions he has the best interest of the band at heart. He may not always make the best or the right decisions, but I think he has a pretty good track record, or the band wouldn't still be around. Time will tell if this was one of the bad decisions or not.

And I also think, well, THEY are rich and famous too. They were just playing to their own kind for a change, hard as that is for us riff-raff to swallow. (There is a thread over at the officials [OOPS! Can I say that here?] about a promoter of the show selling it as a way for VIPs to avoid the riff-raff.)

If this is the start of a pattern, I would be alarmed. A one-time thing? No biggy to me really. It's a little painful, a little bit of a snub, but I'll wait and see what happens next.

AmyLou
08-29-2007, 09:13 AM
OK - how's about this? :)

The Heartbreakers seem to get around in terms of backing up other musicians etc., when not touring with TPATH. They likely don't just "get together" and jam for the grins of it much. So they play these gigs for semi-interested fans - giving the Hamptons crowd the benefit of the doubt that there are a few die-hards in there - but there is no magic. They realize how much they love performing for US and decided to tour again at a venue/price that again makes it reasonable for the rest of us!

Maybe it will take this crowd to make them realize what they're missing! LOL!

Petty Concert Caps Social @ Ross Series

By Kathryn G. Menu

Beyond white tents, wine and cigar stands, scores of chefs serving chunks of premium grade tuna and Kobe beef, Tom Petty rolled out a 90-minute set of classics to close the Social @ Ross School concert series last Saturday night.
The series kicked off on July 14 with a performance by Prince. Throughout the summer, well-heeled fans rocked to tunes by the Dave Matthews Band with special guest Tim Reynolds, Billy Joel and James Taylor before Saturday's closing Tom Petty extravaganza.
The series, held on the Ross School athletic fields on Goodfriend Drive in East Hampton, was not without its share of controversy when it was first announced late this spring. Organized by Bulldog Entertainment, tickets were a whopping $15,000 for all five shows, or, when available, $3,000 per concert.
Designed to be an intimate affair, allowing guests the privilege of world-class cuisine, top-shelf liquor and a front row seat to see acclaimed musicians, Social @ Ross organizers called the experience "the ultimate rock and roll fantasy."
Some questioned whether the concert series, of which a portion of proceeds went to the Stephen J. Ross Scholarship Fund for the Ross School, would detract from other benefits during the lucrative summer season.
According to Diana Aceti, director of programs for the Ross School, that turned out not to be the case.
"The feedback has been very positive and what we have heard and experienced from other benefits that have taken place this summer, no other organization saw a decline," said Aceti. "What people did was attend both the concert and other benefits in the same night."
Aceti said the annual Southampton Hospital summer party was a success, despite the Billy Joel concert at the Ross School the same evening, August 4.
"What's so amazing is there are so many people coming out here everyone can really enjoy all the benefits," said Aceti.
And the Ross School did benefit from the experience. According to Aceti, between the portion of ticket sale profits donated to the school by Bulldog Entertainment and the tickets the school was given to sell on their own, Aceti's last tally showed $1.25 million had been raised for the scholarship fund, and she expects that number to rise.
Aceti also noted the event hired some 700 locals to work at the concerts, from waiters and waitresses to security and construction. The fact that there were no problems to speak of from a police perspective was only testament to the organization of the event, she added.
While Aceti said she was unsure if the series would return to the East End next summer, she did say that the school would be a happy to host of Social @ Ross part two.
Lizzie Grubman, who handled public relations for the series, said it was a very successful year and there is definitely talk about returning to the Hamptons next season.
"From the Prince show to Tom Petty, each concert evolved," said Grubman. "By the end of the summer we had all the kinks worked out."
While Grubman couldn't confirm whether the concert series would go on in other resort communities like Aspen or Dubai later this year, as has been rumored, she did say an announcement was imminent.
That so many musicians attended the concert series at the Ross School, from Paul McCartney to rapper Jay Z, was another happy surprise for Grubman.
"A lot have expressed interest in performing," she said, unwilling to name names. "We saw a lot of artists supporting artists. It's honestly unusual to see so many artists at another's concert."
McCartney was at the Petty show on Saturday, which was a celebrity laden event. Actress Renee Zellweger rocked out just feet from the stage to "Mary Jane's Last Dance," while actor Richard Gere and his actress wife Cary Lowell jammed to "I Won't Back Down."
Comedians Amy Poeler and Will Artnet were also at the show, as well as actor, writer, director Ed Burns, Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels, actress Mischa Barton, and a bevy of chefs including "Top Chef" host and Gramercy Tavern founder Tom Colicchio, who designed the menu for the fete.
Edibles at the event were far from the average Madison Square Garden hot dog. Colicchio's menu included crab cakes, filet mignon with a veal demi-glace sauce, Kobe beef burgers, duck cakes with mango salsa and a panini table with options like Gruyere, caramelized onions and fennel seed. Dylan Lauren's candy store was on hand with a parade of sweets, and Zachy's wine hosted a tasting throughout the night of its vintages.
But at the end of the day, it was not the food, or wine, or celebrity sightings that seemed to thrill most guests. As Tom Petty took to the stage, with the Wildflowers in tow, the crowd of over a thousand swarmed to seats, couches or found space to dance in front of the stage. "This is so cool," squealed a teenage boy, hanging onto the stage.

OMG that's sad. It's been 31 years and people still mess up their name? This is clearly a celebrity gossip writer, not a music writer.

The news about Renee and Paul are all over the rag magazines and they all credit their meeting at the Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers concert. I guess the concert itself isn't big news to People.

All the more reason for the band to love us...:003:

Oh gosh..those rag magazines scare me. Somewhere in the editing department there's a guy quantifying the selling power of big celebrity names and romantic rendezvous... I'm sure Paul and Rene mean big dollar signs….yikes! In reality, it's probably a lot of fuss over nothing...
