OK One more - not for its artistic qualities but to illustrate a couple of points:
1. Check out Mike in this photo taken at Vinny's. He is doing some Jedi guitar trick, and all the other players are looking at him - Jason's got a look of 'What the hell was that? How did he do that? Holy Crap!" while Ron (who was sitting in for Lance that night) might be thinking "There goes Mike showing off again!". I think you might even be able to make out Matt grinning at Mike too from behind the Drum Kit.
2. Also, the last photo of Mike I posted was taken at the same gig - Notice how that photo of Mike has all those great colors, while the latest photo I posted is all washed out, and shows how 'broken in' Vinny's really is!
Gawd I hate using a flash. But just maybe, for this moment and just to capture the artist's expressions, it was warranted.
Yup, Mikes a Jedi alright!

I was probably crouching down when I took a lot of these shots - The day after a shoot I have all these sore muscles that I cant explain LOL!
I just love hearing these guys play. Its so much fun, I just want to jump up and down and scream "I love Rock and Roll!, I love The Dirty Knobs!".
One thing for sure - when they roll into town (probably in a broken down van, crowded with a pack of motley roadies (giggle) and bursting at the seams with equipment) prepare to rock! Mikey's got himself a Rock and Roll band! :)

relic, you don't know how true it is for the band to roll into town in an old broken down white van. when we were at the ballroom last year, chinner asked me to come along and help with some stuff. we went downstairs and out the front door and around the corner to the back parking lot (fenced in and dark). he started pulling out guitars and amps and said "grab some and lets go". at the front door he went in with some guitars and told me to wait at the front with the amps and rest of the stuff. it seemed like forever til he got back while i was on an LA street corner trying to protect mikes amps and guitars. women were waiting for hours to get into the show and asked if they could sit on the amps and take a rest. i said "no, if you value your ass and want to shake it when the knobs play, stay away". maybe not the nicest thing to say or do, but "I WAS A MIKE CAMPBELL ROADIE FOR A NIGHT" and i was going to protect all the equiptment with my life. it's just a small thing in life, but i'll never forget that night, and thank god so many of my friends were there to share it with me. i love you all and let's do it again soon.

When Mike gets that smile, like in the photo on page 11 (or the photo on page 12), It just seems like he's plotting something! It might be challenging another Knob in real time, or a naughty line about to bubble up..... or even a practical joke in the works, or about to be hatched...

^ Thank you very much.
I do get a kick out of taking the photos of course, but mostly I just hope that people might enjoy them.
For me its a strange and entirely Quixotic quest for 'the perfect photo' that encapsulates being immersed in the music. And that is like trying to put lightning in a jar.
It is hard to describe, but you know when you see it don't you?
Its got something to do with capturing the color and energy of a live performance along with it's spontaneity. Its also about seeing the repartee between band members and witnessing their humanity and their passion for the music.
Maybe its also a little like trying to figure out how a great magician performs an illusion! If I take enough well timed shots, I'll finally be able to see the hidden wires and mirrors behind it all! ;)

I guess I could, but then making what was left rectangular would be pretty tricky.
I had to do that because I couldn't cram all that Knobby goodness into the frame with the lens I was using, so I cocked the camera sideways to get all I could.
Of course the sideways tilt probably captures what some of the more inebriated audience members experienced at the gig! :)
I was at the camera store and would have bought the 35mm f/1.4 L lens I have been craving, but the turkeys were sold out!
Within hours of my leaving the store they got more in stock.
Its like Karma is telling me not to buy that lens! That has happened twice now. But Ill get it in time for the next gig! (crossing fingers)

"I'll just keep tilting my head when see your photos..lol I haven't fallen over yet!"
To quote Don Henley, "You must not be drinking enough!" ;)
Yea, the tilted images bother me sometimes, but amputating guitars, legs or other parts when they fall out of the frame bugs me even more.
Maybe I need to find a band where all the members are rectangular! Thats it! Hmmm I wonder if the 'Blockheads' from Gumby ever formed a band?
"The Blockheads" - that sounds like a good band name LOL!
[edit: just checked, its already taken LOL! - also found this bit of info when googling the blockheads: "In the 1995 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1995) Gumby: The Movie, the Blockheads discover that Gumby's dog, Lowbelly, cries pearls when he hears the music performed by Gumby's band, the Clayboys. The Blockheads kidnap Lowbelly and the Clayboys and create clone robots of them, forcing the robots to go after Gumby and play music to get Lowbelly's pearls. Gumby stopped them at the last second and punished them by making them do farm labor." That show was drug related wasn't it? LOL!]

That night was a ball. And there is something extra special when surf medleys are played where you also smell the ocean in the air.
That place was packed. I took refuge half way up the stairs and shot photos from there one night. Another time I shot from the side of the stage, but that is really a walkway and I had to keep the area clear for people to come in to the club so it was really distracting. All in all its not an ideal place for photography but the Knobs and the club were gracious and allowed it, so I gave it a shot :)
Missed the lyrics thing with my camera and I am glad you captured it and reminded me. We were all laughing with the band that night - it is really a great memory that I hadn't thought about in a long time. Thank you!

Someone once wrote a post somewhere suggesting that Mike was watching another guitarist's hands because he didn't know the chords to a well known song....
I thought that was pretty funny given the context because one of the things that is so cool to see in a live show is how the players interact and Mike is a master of it on stage.
I've often seen him watching the other artists playing closely, and when he is doing a duet he will watch the other guitarist's hands most of the time.
Sometimes during an improv, you can watch him and its almost as if he's reading a novel in the other artist's hand movements. Mike's face sometimes reacting when a particularly great part of the plot is revealed. :)
Whatever you call it, it is like musical sign language and it is so cool to see!
_______________
I was listening to music recently and came across a cover of Hey Joe. When it got near the end of the song, where I was expecting a crescendo of drums, it was sorely lacking.
It got me thinking about how Matt plays that song, and how much range he demonstrates. It is really amazingly explosive. So I dug around for a Matt photo (although he wasn't exploding at the time the photo was taken - I really don't have enough photos of Matt, exploding or otherwise! )

While the rest of the Knobs can see the others really well, poor Matt is stuck looking at Knob hindsides most of the night and has to figure out what is happening during the songs telepathically or by reading butt-language! LOL!

The photos jogged my memory of the night - and I remembered that one of the amps was swelling at the beginning of the show. Mike got a little annoyed and joked that if they couldn't make it stop, at least make it happen in the right key!

OK - I checked and that was actually taken with the new camera body.... How quickly I forget....
Funny thing about that photo is I had to clone out a bottle of water in the foreground. Its an imperfect job, and I guess no one noticed - but I feel guilty about it.
Photoshop hocus pocus is something I normally avoid - what you see in the photo is what the camera saw to the best of my ability - but that damn bottle was too distracting. So I disappeared it.
Mike's blue color was due to the Blue Cafe's lighting. And I took a little license with that too because Mike looked a little zombie like (no offense ZZ).

I think using Photoshop is okay. To be honest, the "the camera's ability" can be artificial. You can fix a lot of stuff, like saturation, contrast, composition, etc with Photoshop. Darkroom work was a big part of photography back in the day. We'd crop, change exposure settings, burn and dodge to get a good print. You can pretty much do that in Photoshop.

Good question. I previously described it as some kind of Theremin-like device (it doesnt appear to be a Ebow). Mike was making all kinds of sounds with it through the amps and it seemed like he could control the sound by moving the device, or clasping his hands around it, etc.
So he was going to town with the magic device and needed two hands to make that sucker sing -
Not sure if it was the 'Pirate' part of Mike's personality (giggle) or the Dog part (howl) that resulted in him holding the pick in his teeth...
But I could swear, if only for a second, that the way Mike was playing and interacting with the other Knobs reminded me a little of the way a dog sometimes acts....
You know, when the dog has found something new and exciting, and runs up to you with it in his mouth, tail wagging, showing you what he's found.
It was tail-wagging wonderful!
The Dirty Knobs -Not quite feral, but not entirely domesticated either.
( Keep your eyes on Mike's ears - as long as they dont go back you're going to be just fine! :) )

I'm sure he will love you for that but I think he's around 43. He's a cutie, isn't he?

I think Jason was kind of laughing at me in that shot - I was having a terrible time getting a focus lock with my camera and I suspect that my antics struck Jason's funny-bone :) I was flailing something awful!
It must be odd being on the 'business end' of cameras like Jason and the other Knobs are so much of the time. They are all so photogenic, I'll bet even their driver's license photos look good! Maybe if we ask politely they will let us in on the secret of youth, and looking so damn good all the time, but I'm guessing it has to do with living life immersed in music. It might just be the fountain of youth!

Matt reaching to adjust his drum kit between songs at The Blue Cafe in Long Beach.
Matt was lucky - when Chinner did something like this on stage at Vinny's, Mike goosed him! :)

Well, the way it happened (at Vinny's) was.....
Something on the stage messed up - I don't recall exactly what it was (if I ever knew).
Multiple fans called out 'Chinner!!!!!' and he (in his lovable grouchy way) left the pool table (where he had been shooting pool during the show), and headed to the stage where he bent over to investigate the issue.
Mike gave him a goose, Chinner jumped up and said something like "Hey thats sexual harassment!'
No telling how many people would LIKE to be sexually harassed by Mike :) I guess Chinner isn't one of them LOL!
It was VERY informal at Vinny's that evening, with someone at the bar loudly adding the missing word from the Humdinger lyrics: "Swampfox's girlfriend comes from North Carolina, He says she has a sweet _____________"
There is something wonderfully irreverent about performances in bars. God help me I love every naughty lyric, evil laugh, and even the tipsy fans can be a wonderful source of amusement as long as people are mostly under control :)

Seeing the Knobs at Vinny's is a trip. It's a real redneck bar in the middle of Bakersfield.
That's for the story Relic. Too funny!

I kind of cut off the top of his head in this but I like this one with the Dirty Knobs trunk top and the beautiful guitar.

Mike looks young in that photo Marion! Is that a wild guitar or what?
Here is one taken at the Joint (Now Joe's Joint) - Mike and Jason reading each others fingers as they play.

OK Maybe you ought to sit down for a while :)
But after you are rested, here is another.... From the Joint - not technically a Knobs performance I believe, since Matt and Lance were absent, but I thought it was a cool photo...
