I'm suprised this thread isn't alive. Maybe its overated. I Don't know. Let's make it intresting. Tell us why, Maybe name a few others, favourite album as well?

My favorite song from Tom is, "You Don't Know How It Feels". Everything about it, the lyrics, the palm muting, the harmonica, the 3 chord change in the chorus, i love it all. It was one of my favorite songs as a young boy. I can't remember if it was my brother who exposed me to Wildflowers, But I knew that album since I was little. And its my favorite album. Whats not to love? "Wildflowers", "Time To Move On", "Wake Up Time", "Only A Broken Heart", "You Wreck Me", "Honey Bee", "To Find A Friend", "A Cabin Down Below". Its without a doubt, the best album I've ever heard, EVER.

My favourite song credited to Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers has to be "You Got Lucky". I'm not a big fan of the 80s sound, the synth, the drums, all of it. But this one is special. Those lyrics are wonderful. If he did that song simply in acoustic, it would have been just as amazing, maybe even better. The chorus is where it hits hard. Theres so many others. All of his Albums are amazing. "Hard Promises", "Damn The Torpedos", "Into The Great Wide Open", those are just the first ones that come to mind. Tom Petty, one of the few artists who maintained a great sound from the 70s to today.

Okay, I definitely know my favorite TP album, with or without the Heartbreakers, and I just mentioned it as my second favorite of all time, Hard Promises. This is the first album I bought from them when I was 14. I had just gone through a very traumatic few years, and I was hearing a lot of songs on the radio by this guy named Tom Petty. So, with money I got for Christmas, I bought this album, Ghost In The Machine by the Police, and a couple others that I can't even remember. I can't tell you how much this album literally changed my life. Tom Petty wasn't my first crush, but he's certainly been the longest lasting! The cover picture wasn't very flattering, but the inside pics were amazing, and almost every song was spectacular! 'A Woman In Love' was always my favorite from that, 'You Can Still Change Your Mind' is gorgeous, 'Something Big' is coying and clever, 'Letting You Go' is a seemingly lighthearted take filled with aching. Unfortunately one of his biggest duds, 'Kings Road', is also on there. I guess it was the token fast song, but with a line like, 'They had socks and shirts and underwear, that I'd seen before but I don't know where,' it lost me completely. 'Nightwatchman' took forever to grow on me, now I have no idea what my problem was with it; the way he sings it is just priceless.

This album made me want to be a writer, and thanks to Benmont Tench's phenomenal keyboards, it made me love the organ again (there's just no non-funny way to put this!). I took lessons for three years on a Hammond from the 60s that I still own, but my father was a tyrant, and between his practice rants, and that stupid 'cha-cha' box, (some kind of rhythm box they added), I quit completely. Plus I had been forced to go to church every week, and I don't like church organs, and every organ before that album was sounding like a church organ to me. Benmont cured me of THAT problem, and I'm forever grateful! Plus, he's not bad looking, either!

I've recently heard TP put down the 'muddy' production of this album, and though I do understand where he's coming from, I hope he never Fs with it. There's high street cred in that production; this wasn't a 'pretty' album by any means. It was a messy, emotional, REAL album, and I believe it saved my life on many levels.

I don't have ONE favorite song, so I'll get back to this later!

Hard Promises is an amazing album. Wildflowers def had the life changing effect on me as well. I can talk about that album all day. On Hard Promises, I adore a different set of songs, personally. "The Waiting", "Kings Road", "Letting You Go" & "The Criminal Mind". I love the whole album tho. I enjoyed the production of the album. Wonderful for an 80s album.

Currently I am really into:

Dreamville / Joe

&

Hard on Me / House in the Woods (2 very under appreciated songs of Wildflowers)

I just can't pin it quite down, but I can not stop listening to those songs.

I don't like trying to choose a favorite song. But for a long time it was Refugee and Here Comes My Girl.
After many years Echo replaced Damn The Torpedoes as my favorite album.

I can't name one favorite TPATH song or album. I just can't relegate some of my favorites to second place. I suspect LAD would be my most played album, if I could count up plays over my lifetime. But that doesn't necessarily mean it is my favorite. I mean, how could I like LAD more than DTT, for example? I just can't choose.

My favorite song is definately Mary Jane´s Last Dance, the song (and video) made me become a fan and I´ll always associate it with the time when my mom listened to that song and I never knew who sings it till the day, I saw the video again and fell in love with Tom. It´ll always remind me of that feeling I had and still have. :)
I don´t know, this song means so much to me.
Besides, my god, this is such a wonderful song, maybe one of the best songs ever, the melodie, those lyrics, the harmonica, the guitars... maybe I would still be a fan even if that was the only good song they´d ever done, because it´s just too good. :003:
When I think of listening to that song live on a concert, wow this must be absolutely overwhelming, this would be a dream come true for me.
But I love so many other songs too and it even hurts me that I can´t mention them all, there are just too many... To mention just three I would say, The Damage You´ve Done, Too Much Ain´t Enough and You Wreck Me. I´ll have to think about the others... lol

I really can´t decide which one is my favorite album, so I´ll take the Best Of... :p

I can't pick a favourite song. For one, I haven't heard them all, and two, each song has something about it that I like. I don't make sense.

sometimes I think my favorite song is Free Fallin, other times I think it's Learnin to Fly. Whenever I try to pick just one of those two, it feels wrong. So it will have to be both.

Favorite album - probably Wildflowers, because I've listened to the whole thing start to finish so many times. And the time in my life when that came out - I took to it like glue.

Now that I have an ipod, I listen to songs more than albums. And I'm starting to collect bootlegs, which are so awesome. I go through phases where I can't get enough of one song and play it over and over again. My current favorite in that category is "That Date I Had With THat Ugly Old Homecoming Queen." It's loud and funny and brilliant!

Some of my favorites, just off the top of my head:

You Tell Me
A Woman In Love (It's Not Me)
Luna
Since You Said You Loved Me
Dreamville
You Can Still Change Your Mind
Nightwatchman
My Life/Your World
Runaway Trains
All or Nothin'
Dog On The Run (Not Southern Accents version)
One More Day, One More Night
Waiting For Tonight
Sweet William

Mostly, I tend to love the moody, mysterious songs, which are usually not the hits. I tend to get sick of the hit songs after a while! If/When I think of some more, I'll add them later.

Anything from the first 3 albums. Especially you're gonna get it.
I always though "anything that's rock n roll" was the definitive TP song.
Thank God it hasn't be radio played to death.

I'd have to narrow it down to my favorite on each album, because I could never pick just one. For sentimental reasons, "The Waiting" will always be my favorite- it was my first TP&HB song.

I really do think "You Tell Me" doesn't get enough props- that was my favorite when I was reading The Stand. That song evoked the same mood for me as the book did. Mike, Ron and Ben still knock me out when I listen to it- that bass riff kills.

Other faves: "Straight Into Darkness", It'll All Work Out", "Woman In Love", "Too Much Ain't Enough", "Magnolia", "The Wild One Forever", "Rebels" and "One Story Town".

I can't wait for the Favorite Video and Favorite TP&HB Parody threads...

Once again Beam, we think exactly alike, excellent example of the bands best work.
"you tell me" is a fantastic song.
So many songs, so many never got the radio play they deserved.
You got aerosmith selling millions of "love in an elevator" crap, and "The wild one" never getting airplay.
they should re-release all this old stuff. I hear these lists, and go oh yeah, that one, and that one, and that one.
Amazing body or work.

I used to listen to " Into the Great Wide Open " on a tape I had, mixed with many other songs which weren't from TPATH. I loved, and still love, the intro. The way he plays that guitar makes me laugh, it sounds so funny. Then I sang along...
I was done for when I watched the video. Tom had got another fan!

It is hard to choose a favourite! I like " When a Kid Goes Bad " and " Out In the Cold " as well.

I was just listening to "I'm Crying" on the Soundstage CD today and realized I'd forgotten to add it to my favorites. It didn't come to mind because it's not on a Heartbreakers album. That one and "Carol" are damn good covers !

damn such a hard question. I have so many favorites. I really dont get the question because i dont know if ur asking my favorite to listen to or my favorite all around song or if its my fav Tom song or fav TP&TH song. My favorite Tom Petty song would have to be 'Crawling back to you' but my favorite TP&TH is still undecided. Someone should do a Top 5 TP&TH song list.

Mine will always be "Breakdown". First heard it when I was around 5 years old in, I think, 1977. I sang it to my husband for his 40th birthday party. Everyone knows I'm Petty's Girl, that is after my hubby!!! :)

my favorite album ever is Full Moon Fever.
its the first petty material ive ever heard, and it is soo under rated. every single song on it is golden. so many different emotions are put into that album. everything from runnin down a dream to love is a long road. of course, the most notable song would probably be free fallin' even though its pretty much a widely known anthem that lost much of its sincerity and meaning thru popularity. it is difficult to pick out a favorite petty song seeing as they are all amazing, and they all capture a certain aspect of my emotions. one of my favorites is definitely yer so bad. its catchy tune often fools people into believing that its just another catchy melody. fer some reason, the lyrics just speak to me in an inspiring fashion, and affect me on a personal level. it is such a great song. but in all honesty, every true petty fan knows that it is near impossible to pick a favorite song of his. that might be why this thread isnt alive?

^ Actually, it got lots of critical acclaim after it was released, way too much airplay (here in L.A., anyway), and a lot of Petty fans I know enthuse ad nauseum about "Won't Back Down" and "Free Falling"- they can't believe that I don't think it's the best album of the 90s. FMF gets plenty of respect, just not from Martin and me.

martin03345
07-27-2008, 01:54 AM
If the album is so not respected, why does it occupy about 30 percent of set list and 75 percent of the halftime show set list? Because it was a mega pop rock hit and critics loved it and everyone loved it. The only ones who didn't were the A & R department who in 88 shot the album down
