Well I'll be damned, Sweet William!, Straight into Darkness, End of the Line!, and Spike, that's a great deep cut list, although some I could deal without, that's just a fucking great list

I don't like the fact they started off with 2 Wildflowers songs and the fact they only played 18 songs instead of 21 like usual but hell, I think I can live with it with those deep cuts, hopefully someone booted that show

You know I've been saying in the back of my mind that I wished they would play End of the Line. OMG! And Straight into Darkness. Okay, now I will resume my no looking policy, lol.

I've been saying for quite awhile, drop Handle with Care and put End of the Line on, and I wish they would do it the extended version with the long opening, it would build up great anticipation and would just be so freaking cool

Nice move opening with You Wreck Me. Love that song and it is a great rocker to start things rolling. Nice setlist, but I agree that it needs to be a couple of songs longer. Great to see Straight Into Darkness there! I would love to see more from that album. Happy to see Face In The Crowd. I was hoping to see Breakdown make a comeback. It will be great if Tom changes up the set-list throughout the tour. Woo hoo! The tour is on!

Spike?? YAY!! I hope he sings it at the Hollywood Bowl. I've been dying to see that live. All in all not a bad setlist. Thanks for posting this, Ref.

That looks like a great setlist to me. I'll be they jam on Sweet William! End of the Line and Face in the Crowd. It looks like they mixed it up pretty good and kept enough greatest hits in there to keep people happy.

OMG! This is amazing!! Straight Into Darkness is my absolute favorite, I need that one in Raleigh!
What, no Free Fallin? They must have played Free Fallin'.
ssshhhh, Marion - don't remind them! :p
I tried not to look, I really did, but I just couldn't help myself.
Sharon, I have somehow managed to not look at the Mark Knoplfer setlists and the tour started 3 months ago. My first show is in Red Rocks in 3 weeks so I think I can make it. I thought about doing the same for TPATH but when I saw your email this morning that said "What about that setlist?" I ran right over! A person only has so much resolve!
Great show last night. Tom was in good spirits and all smiles last night! Very happy with the setlist. I was blown away that they did "Sweet William"!!!!!!!!!!!! Wish I was going to Detroit tonight!!
Do not miss Steve Winwood. He was awesome. Looked great, sounded great. Him and his band were great.

First of all - they definitely did do Free Fallin...
Saving Grace kind of snuck in with an awesome intro... they totally rocked it out.
End of the Line - that was my ONE request - thought Scott would do a great job on the other parts and he did... totally made the show.
and OMFG - Spike!
I have lots of stories to tell about this one... someday :)

Just got home from a great night and day in Grand Rapids. I'll post something longer a little later. The crowd seemed OK with Spike. I was in the 18th row, between TP and Ron, and could hear people singing along though. I personally freaked over Straight Into Darkness..... More later :)

Here you go folks --
Well to start with, my big concern wasn't locating the hotel or the arena. I was concerned about the weather. All week long the weatherpeople had been talking about thunderstorms rolling through Michigan. Even as I watched the weather at noon on Friday - they were still predicting heavy rain, potential for hail...just a mess.
I drove to my friend's house, got her things into the car, and we drove to Grand Rapids - a little longer than a 90 minute drive for me. As we were leaving town, it rained. But as we got closer to Grand Rapids, the skies opened up, and it turned into a gorgeous summer evening. No problems driving or finding the hotel. No need for rain gear.
We stayed at the JW Marriott, the newest hotel in town. It's spiffy! Just look at the website (http://www.ilovethejw.com/)and you'll see what I mean. We chilled in the room, ordered room service, and talked and talked. The hotel was also two blocks from the arena - no problem to walk.
Arrived at 7pm for the 7:30 show time. There was no line at will call. Getting into the venue was a piece of cake. The crowd was well behaved and courteous, though definitely there to rock out. I'd been worried that being on the floor I wouldn't be able to see a thing, but those fears were allayed as Steve Winwood and band took the stage.
I am not a big Winwood fan, but made an effort to listen to some of his music before the show. I know he's a legend and assumed the set would be fantastic. No disappointment there at all, though I couldn't tell you the songs. I closed my eyes, grooved and floated to the expansive jamming. As a reviewer said people really weren't into it much. On the hits, though, people sang along. Not much standing up and dancing..... At the end they did get a standing ovation.
Now, the guys who were sitting next to me, I'm not sure what the [bleep] they were even doing in the building - how many beer runs can there be in a three hour period? Seriously. One of them sat down for 2-3 songs during the Petty set to send a few text messages! I liked it best when they two left to go get beer -- more room for me to dance. :003:
I don't think I need to explain how fabulous the TPATH set was. Don't think I've got the words. Exactly what I expected and then some. The set list choices surprised me....I screamed for joy at Straight Into Darkness and Spike. The lady next to me was hoping for Honeybee....humph, maybe next tour or show???? Anyhow, I kept looking from the video screens to the live performance - a bit surreal. The video made me think I was in my home watching a DVD, but then I'd look down...and there they were. LOL. By the end of the night I watched more of the live performance than the video version. The TPATH set ran just over two hours - maybe 2:15? The Winwood set clocked in right around the 60 minute mark.
I didn't have a camera with me, sorry for those of you hoping for pix. I really wanted to just enjoy this show and get the full "PETTY" experience. I am a Petty-live virgin no longer.
I will try to describe the lighting setup a bit more. A tree is a good metaphor. Maybe half of a tree? I like half of an opened umbrella - now get that in your mind's eye. Far above the stage, video screens around the outside of the opened umbrella. "Cubes" dangling from the right and left sides of the umbrella...the cubes were smaller video screens. Also, on the 'inside' and upper portion of the umbrella, another large video screen. And, from the inside of that screen, on either side of Ferrone, strings of lights which resembled the old carnival lights on strings..... I dunno.
Ahhh, you'll see what I mean. Now where are all of the videos I saw being shot last night? And when can I get a bootleg? LOL. Great show - no disappointments. I'll be watching the set list like everyone else - wonder how it will develop.... Gotta go burn a CD of these older songs for the folks who are going to Blossom in June with me..... maybe take a nap first.

I was up front so didn't really get the reaction from behind, but I would say about half of the people there had ever heard the song. We were going just ballistic over it -
Without getting all "about me" because as we all know when you get eye contact from any one of these guys from the stage you feel like the prettiest girl in the room... (as always I digress), but Tom was definitely for lack of better words - challenged and amused - that we up front could match him word for word on Spike. It was definitely one of the main highlights of the show. They HAVE to keep it in. :045:

Thanks everyone - I remember on the 06 tour that I always enjoyed the reviews that people posted. Made me feel like I was there, even though I wasn't.
Tim: The crowd was older, well-behaved. I think the age range stretched from 20s-50s+. Seemed to be mostly older 30, 40, 50ish.
