stars next to posts ?

Can anyone tell me what the stars next to the posts mean ?
I've tried to find out but can't seem to find the key.

if someone rates a thread the average rating (in stars) shows up next to the post.

you can rate threads by going into a thread and clicking the RATE THIS THREAD link at the top right of the posts.
