A man swimming in the ocean near Solana Beach (http://weblog.signonsandiego.com/news/breaking/2008/04/coast_guard_to_assist.html) was killed this morning by a shark, the Times' Molly-Hennessy-Fiske reports. (http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-shark26apr26,0,3429715.story)

A man 55 to 60 years old was swimming with others at Tide Beach about 7 a.m. when he was attacked, according to a statement on the Solana Beach city website.

The man, whose identity was not immediately released, was taken to the Fletcher Cove Park lifeguard station for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead at the scene, the statement said.

Swimmers were ordered out of the water along a 17-mile stretch around the attack site, and the San Diego County Sheriff's Department sent up helicopters to scan the waters for the shark.

"The shark is still in the area. We're sure of that," Solana Beach Mayor Joe Kellejian told the Associated Press.

Times staffers are on the story, so more details are to come.

I am very sad for that man and his family. However, I wonder how much it is costing to send those helicopters to scan the waters for the shark. I suppose they'll kill it if they find it. That's his habitat, not ours. Sorry for the rant.

I heard this on my way home. Naturally, it's the top story here. Horrible!
Those things just don't happen in these parts. So awful. I don't know if they have ID'd the man yet.
But given his age and location, most likely I've dated him. Sorry....

He's a retired veterinarian, Barb - I read more about him last night so he has been ID'd. Very sad. The theory is the shark was after a seal as several have been spotted in that area, and unfortunately a swimmer looks/feels like a seal from a shark's perspective.

I watched The Today show this morning and his children were guest. It sounds like he was really a wonderful man. They spoke so highly of him and said that even though the loss was very sad and horrific, he died doing what he loved and that he had a great life. They felt from witness account that his death was relatively quick. I don't know how they were to hold it together during the interview. I'm sure they're still in shock.
