Woo-hoo! What a show! Well, front row, right between Mike and Tom, with a clear shot of Benmont and Tom L. and Randall, what could be better than that?? Man, the band was on fire and so was the crowd. I didn't know my town was so cool! LOL
Damn those guys are having so much fun and they sounded fantastic!!! I'm pretty sure the set-list was the same. I got a wave and a couple of smiles from M.C. (swoon) and I even got a little something from Benmont. :) I have never seen him smile so much. My friend Debby who was with me said she couldn't take her eyes off Benmont all night, he was just mesmerizing to watch. We all agreed in the car on the way home that it was one of the best shows of any kind than any of us had ever seen. I felt so happy for the band that the crowd loved the show so much. You could tell they were loving it!

Wow! Nothin' but the goods. The San Diego mountain evening was electric at the very moment they started to pick SHADY GROVE - you felt the energy flowing onto the audience and back to the stage with Petty's vibrant bass chords and the electric/acoustic guitar combo - Rockgrass at it's finest!

I wish I remembered to bring the pen but I remember hearing a very tight ORPHAN OF THE STORM and SIX DAYS ON THE ROAD. ORPHAN had a slow start and then got rollin'. SIX DAYS felt like I was having a beer while listening to the best sounding bar band.

I DON"T SCARE EASY got the crowd rockin' again (man, Tom Petty knows how to write some soulful feeling songs) which had a Heartbreakers sound to it until you heard Tom's bass notes broaden the sound spectrum. Somewhere Ben played a classic sounding tune he wrote called THIS IS A GOOD STREET which had a kool retro 60's sound with funky piano chords/chops. Petty covered Dylan's MOST LIKELY YOU GO YOUR WAY AND I'LL GO MINE which was very perky.

Another couple of highlights in the middle of the set was Roger McGuinn's LOVER OF THE BAYOU which I thought had so much energy compared to the studio cut I've been hearing on Buried Treasure. Tom Leadon sung a Mudcrutch classic QUEEN OF THE GO GO GIRLS which had a rawhide feel to it. HOUSE OF STONE had a cool tempo and interesting lyrics but even more inspiring was the OH MARIA which took the audience breath away, which Tom joked.

One of my favorite highlight was the Bill Monroe bluegrass classic LOVE PLEASE COME HOME, especially since Campbell was pickin' his electric green mandolin. Oh that reminds me of all the classic guitars that were played by the Mike and Tom L., pictures of that would be a fun slideshow. THE WRONG THING TO DO, I believe a country song, and TOPANGA COWGIRL sounded well polished.

I do have to say Mudcrutch played nearly every American style of music. I didn't expect the tripped out CRAZY RIVER that got the 60's flashback spinning which nearly stopped and went immediately into a retro rockin' SUMMERTIME BLUES. Also amazing was the Mudcrutch dual guitar instrumental JUNE APPLE. I believe the set ended with BOOTLEG FLYER, but whenever they piloted the song it was rockin with energy all around.

Mudcrutch came out with RAINY DAY WOMAN as an encore, and we were. The Mary Jane was burning all night and the audience had the line down by that time "EVERYBODY MUST GET STONED!" They finished with a high paced hop HIGH SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL.

THANKS MUDCRUTCH!!!

I am going to order my CD right now. Happy Traiiils everyone!

The highlights of the night for me were Crystal River (it's a super-long jam but such incredible guitar! James said it has a "Phish" feel to it), The Wrong Thing To
Do, Summertime Blues, Bootleg Flyer, and of course Benmont's song.
I forgot to say how beautiful the night was - this is an outdoor venue in the hills
on the outskirts of town and the night was starry and clear and a huge full moon hung in the sky. It was really just magical.
^ Scoobie - loved your review!

Last night was so much fun! I was right up in front of Mike, so I could see everyone from there. It was funny Ben walked right by the line before the concert, and no one noticed!!!!! But then the second time he walked by they all did, cuase I told them. haha.

I had a great time. And the people around me in line made sitting there for four hours so much better, and we had a blast during the show. The band just blew me away. Ill write more later but I have to go to school now.

He did the Same thing in Malibu....but I wasn't about to let him slide past with out a cheerful hello and a hand shake. He seemed a bit surprised to be recognized. swoon, Damn what a beautiful man!:045:

I was there last night.
Greatest show I've been to!

For fifty dollar tickets, I got as close to the stage as I possibly could. I was ten, fifteen feet from the stage, and I had a perfect view of everyone.

I really had a good time there, and it saddens me that I will probably never get that close to Tom or any of the guys again. But I can hope right?

Like all the other members said, San Diego loved the band!
A beautiful night for rock and roll!

Shianne - we must have been only a few feet from each other. I'm thinking you might have been to my left, a little towards Ben. I saw MC look over there and smile a bunch of times. Wasn't that show just incredible?? I'm still on a high. So glad you got to go, and on a school night too!
^ And welcome to the Farm, Rebel!

^I was just right in front of Mike. He kept smiling at me and my friend. And my friend had made some posters that he kept reading and laughing at. Even Tom read one and laughed. I dont even remember what the posters even said.
It was definetely worth being super tired all day, but I need a nap now. lol.

My wife and I were in total awe. The BEST concert I have ever been to in my 62 years of concerts. Been to shows like Sonny Terry & Brownie McGee in the 50's, Mount Tamalpias in the 60's to see Big Brother & the Holding Co., Grateful Dead and Jimi Hendrix, Eagles and Rolling Stones in the 70's and 80's etc etc and this was better. I've seen just about everybody worthwhile over the years but this was the best.

I've thought a lot about it and it was simply you felt that you were an integral part of the band. No egos, no big heads, just a stage full of very talented old friends doing what they love, and everybody in the audience had to know it.

We also were 15 feet from the band and had so much fun being very involved with their interplay and relaxed charm. Everybody was sharp, crisp and on top of their game. What great personalties they all are blessed with. Eddie Cochran, Dave Dudley and Bobby Zimmerman would have been honored by sensitive renditions of their famous songs. All the new stuff was impressive, we'll be among the first to score a CD next week.

Well done San Diego! Tom and the boys knew we were loving every word and note...what an evening, and Viejas was a great facility!!!

Thanks, guys, I feel very welcome! We were on the west side three rows back pretty much right in front of Mike. We met a nice lady and her daughter before the show started who were behind us, they drove down from Santa Ana and she is a long time member of the Tom Petty Fan Club. My wife gave a pen to Dana and her husband who were on the other side of us and were from Encinitas get an autograph. My wife, Joanne wondered if she had any success getting an autograph after the show?

Great people, great time. I also appreciated there wasn't some stupid "intro" band to endure before the show started. My wife is now (finally) a big Tom Petty fan!!!!
