Well I finally made it home from the bay area a while ago. Wow! What a show and what a night! I have to tell you all I had no intention of going to this show until Lizzygirl and Gloria (Tompettyisking) double teamed me and talked me into going. Well girls, I want to thank both of you SO much! I'm so glad I didn't miss this show. It was aboslutely incredible.
I'll start by saying...YES! I drove to the bay by myself, found the venue (it's been years since I was there last) and actually found a great parking spot right across the street from the venue. It was like the concert gods were shining down on me. :003:
I stood in line with the nicest couple. She post at the officals as I think she said, Petty4me. But I'm not absolute about that. Anyway, they were so sweet.
The show started pretty much on time. As far as the songs go since the setlist doesn't really change too much I'll just tell you this, the crowd is really showing their love for this music. The songs that seem to be getting a lot of love are Six Days On The Road ( My new favorite today), The Wrong Thing To Do, Lover of The Bayou and Scare Easy. Crystal River is a long jam that I thought the crowd really got into, but you know how those long jams can go sometimes. I personally loved it but then I love it anytime I get to see Mike Campbell stretch out on those guitar solo's. I also loved June Apple for the same reason. Mike and Tom Leadon play together. I love watching that. It's a thrill for me. The song that caught me off guard because it really rocks live was Topanga Cowgirl. But if I was forced to choose one song that the fans seemed to receive the best I honestly couldn't tell you based on this crowd. They loved everything this band dished out.Tom even said San Francisco audiences are some of the best music listeners. I guess he was trying to say we seem to be very open minded when it comes to music.
The guys were all smiles and they look like they're having a hellava good time! Benmont is just cutting up. He's having a blast with this and it shows all over his face and in his attitude. Another thing that's taking me by surprise is how well the fans have taken to Tom Leadon and Randall Marsh. It's really sweet. I am SO impressed with Tom's guitar skills. It's a pleasure to watch him play. He's really enjoying himself. And Randall Marsh is no slouch on those drums. Poor drummer's they always seem to get the short end of the stick sitting way back there. Then there's Mr. Petty on bass. Whoa! I was not ready for this. He blew me away.
I loved hearing Tom Leadon talk about the old Mudcrutch days and he thanked Tom profusely for this whole experience. He said a big part of it was that he gets to hang around Tom Petty again. He said to the audience, "I can't tell you how cool that is". It was funny because somebody yelled out, "I want to hang out with Tom Petty", LOL!
Now for a little side info. First of all we had the crowd crashers. You know, those people who as the evening gets on they decide all of a sudden they're just going to push their way up front. Ugh! These people get on my last nerve! Me and another girl standing next to me decided, it ain't happening here. And with both of us being big girls, I don't think too many wanted to try. And then, there was smoking in the venue, and lots of it. People were just lighting up their joints and cigarettes all over the place, even Tom smoked up on stage, lol. But heaven forbid you pull out a camera or video. Security would come running right over, lol.
I have to say though. I was standing with some very nice people. One guy standing by me was joking and said to me after the show. You're like the cool girl in high school, will you marry me? LMAOO! I thought that was too funny, especially to anyone who knows me.
I loved seeing my Lizzygirl and Glo! Lizzy, thank you for the ticket. It's a night I'll never forget. Glo, thanks for leading me back to the freeway. As always, it was great to see you. Your friend Melanie is a sweetheart. Zombie, it was such a pleasure to hang with you and I'll see you Saturday. Gatorlily, it was so good to see you right there at the end the show. It's been too long.
Speaking of long, sorry about this but I'm tired and the thoughts just keep coming. I can't wait for Saturday to get here.
To Tom P., Mike, Benmont, Randall and Tom L., thank you guys so much for an incredible night of Muddy music!
