Howdy, I'm the Associate Editor at Jambase.com and I attended the Santa Cruz Civic show on Monday night. My rave for it was published this afternoon and I thought I'd share it with you folks...

Personally, I'll be surprised if this one doesn't make my Favorite Shows of 2008 list. A real treat.

Great review :) I wish I had been able to hear all the songs before the gig, but the element of surprise was a wonderful wonderful change-up :)
Think I got a contact buzz reading that review!

"I just can't tell you how fun this is," said Petty. "So sweet." Appreciating their pleasure was the key to fully engaging this music. Having seen Petty perform close to a dozen times over three decades I can confidently say I've never seen the man or Heartbreakers Benmont Tench (keyboards) and Mike Campbell (guitar) have a better time. After only a couple songs, you picked up the sense that these guys were rediscovering what made them want to be in a band in the first place, revisiting treasured inspirations and playing music that made them happy, regardless of how it might be received.
That just says it all, doesn't it? I LOVE it!!!!
Thank you SO much, Snappy! What a pleasure it is to read such a nice review. :)

Thanks for the good word and the hearty welcome, folks. Had a sense you were cool people and I can always use more of those around me!
Here's a short review of Petty and the Heartbreakers at Bonnaroo 2006 that I wrote (about a 1/3 of the way down page). It's part of the massive festival report but still rates as one of my favorite time's seeing Tom:

Nice review. And thanks for the link to the Jim Harrington review. What was HE smoking?

I think Jim might NOT have been smoking anything, which would be a small problem with Mudcrutch! There was a comment posted on the JamBase review complaining about the references but given the omnipresence of pot in the room AND the smoky vibe of the music (down to lyrics about it!) it seemed appropriate. It's funny how even in 2008 drugs still remain a hot button issue despite how much a part of the music scene they've been, well, forever.
On that note, I do a round-up of neat visuals keyed to a historical event related to music (birthdays, album releases, etc) each Saturday called Saturday Eye Candy. Today's entry is about the first time Dr. Albert Hoffman, the inventor of LSD, took his own drug. Some fun clips if you seek distraction:
