Mudcrutch is not just Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers by another name. It's more like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers minus all the really good songs.

Imagine going to a Heartbreakers show and having the band only play from "The Last DJ" or "Highway Companion" and you get a sense for what it was like to attend the Mudcrutch concert on Monday night at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium. It'll likely be the same story when Petty's pre-Heartbreakers outfit, which he's recently resurrected from more than 30 years in the grave, performs Wednesday and Thursday at the Fillmore in San Francisco.

It's understandable, and even commendable, that Petty wants Mudcrutch to be its own entity, not just a cover band that plays Heartbreakers hits. If he's not going to play the fan favorites, though, he's got to give the crowd something else worthwhile in its place.

Unfortunately, that didn't happen in Santa Cruz. Petty played all 14 of the tracks from Mudcrutch's forthcoming eponymous debut, due in stores April 29, yet none of those selections was spectacular and very few were even memorable. Mudcrutch did toss in some fun cover songs — such as Dave Dudley's "Six Days on the Road" and Roger McGuinn's "Lover of the Bayou" — yet those renditions never rose above the basic bar-band level.

While the Heartbreakers always come across like a well-oiled machine, Mudcrutch definitely had some sludge in its engine as it opened the show with a version of the old folk standard "Shady Grove" that never really came together. From there, the band — which also features Heartbreakers Mike Campbell on guitar and Benmont Tench on keyboards, as well as guitarist Tom Leadon and drummer Randall Marsh — mostly delivered the type of unremarkable country-rock that far too many Flying Burrito Brothers clones churned out in the '70s.

On the plus side, Petty was clearly enjoying the reunion and that translated into one of his more personable performances. Also, some of the new Mudcrutch lyrics — such as the great line from "Scare Easy," "Yeah, I'm a loser at the top of my game" — rank among the best that Petty has penned in years.

Yet, those elements couldn't compensate for the fact that this band just didn't gel all that well or that the crowd was forced to hear Leadon sing the dreadful "Queen of the Go Go Dancers." Thus, what the audience was left with was the novelty factor. It was novel to get the chance to see Petty's pre-Heartbreakers band, which lasted from 1970 to 1975 and only released one single. It was novel to hear Petty play bass, instead of his regular guitar. And it was novel for fans to finally meet Petty's old buddies Leadon and Marsh.

In the end, however, those novelties weren't enough.

Was this review written by the same person whining about wanting to hear Heartbreakers songs in another thread? Good grief.

What a jerk!

Firstly, The Last DJ was awesome, and there are parts of Highway Companion that I love just as much as anything that Tom had done previously, with or without the Heartbreakers.

Mudcrutch isn't the Heartbreakers, therefore it shouldn't sound like the Heartbreakers. Excuse someone for doing something different. And he probably didn't like it when the Heartbreakers played all those awesome blues covers at the Vic and Soundstage. (Was that really five years ago this week?)

It sounds like this guy doesn't much for country music as a whole anyway.

Who claimed that Mudcrutch was TPATH by another name? Who claimed that this was a "Heartbreakers show"? Jim Harrington, go to hell. :icon_rolleyes: But before doing so, please leave your Fillmore press pass at Will Call under my name. ;)

Tom Pretty and the Heartbreakers have really good song!? What really good songs? They are a bar band / cover band. Great review, sometimes the fans don't hear it that way and don't want to hear and see the truth.

To me, that is all that matters. Tom's contributed more than his fair share in the name of the music - he could sit on a stool and read nursy rhymes for all I care...because he DESERVES to do whatever the hell he sees fit. And yes, his rendition of "Little Miss Muffet" would get a few hoots and hollers from me! ;)

This guy needs to chat with the other "columnest" who thinks Tom is overrrated. They could start a support group for musically-challenged oafs.

Right-- the likes of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, etc. have horrible taste in music... Including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame board.

^ ["Oh well, Ya Can't please everyone".] You said it Tim. It just can't be done. With all their success and accolades, I think TPATH/Mudcrutch can live with that, I know I can, lol.

I paid $60 including Ticketmaster fees for my Alpine Mudcrutch tickets.
I consider that a BARGAIN considering the quality of the musicians I'm gonna see. I can't
imagine anyone thinking that these prices are out of line at all!
(Like or dislike the band - makes no difference to me. To each his own.)

It always amazes me when I read a review of something that I had attended since I seem to have such a totally different opinion than the writer. This was no exception. I LOVED LAST NIGHTS SHOW! And of course, a group of really drunk guys in front and even some folks behind me were yelling for Heartbreakers songs...WHAT:eek:...?!! How disrespectful to the band as a whole-geez people.
Having musicians of such incredible caliber in a smaller venue was awesome in itself but the music was great! Tom playing bass- doing most of the singing but also some backup harmony and just mixing things up with Benmont singing a lead in 'good street' (I think that's the name of the song) and having the old band together was really a treat. Screw reviews anyway, it's only one persons opinion. Its just too bad that those things get published in mainstream papers and mags, let people go and decide for themselves. I wasnt dissapointed in the least. I'm buying the album.
