The three encore songs were:

Rip It Up
It's Off The Hook
Boppin' At The High School Hop

Great show!

"Boppin' At The High School Hop" is actually "High School Confidential" the great Jerry Lee Lewis song. I don't recognize title It's Off The Hook ......

Looking very forward to Wednesday night @ Fillmore! WooHoooooo

"off the hook" was recorded in june 1964 by the rolling stones at regent sound studios in london, and released nov 13, 1964. produced by andrew oldham, it was the "B" side of "little red rooster".

Ahh, thanks for the correction. As for It's Off The Hook, when I googled it, it showed it as being a Rolling Stones song.

I was at the Malibu show last night. It was amazing.
"Lover of the Bayou" (McGuinn / Levy) was so good. They also had some new great mellow tunes which reminded me of his smooth Wildflowers-style voice. And they rocked with the encore!

Tom Petty messed up "I Can't Fight It" 3 times. He kept singing the song in the wrong key (or maybe an octave too low). Mike and Benmont came over and then Tom nailed the song! It was a crowd pleaser. Love that song.

Missing was "Depot Street" and "Up in Mississippi Tonight". It was cool seeing Tom play bass all night. Tom Leadon sang at times and played some nice solos. I don't think I heard Randall speak, but he played solid. Benmont and Mike rule!

They all seemed like they were having fun. The sound was good where I sat. I couldn't sleep last night, I was so pumped!!!

Welcome to the farm Rex! Thanks for the review. I can not wait to hear "I Can't Fight it" live. What a crack up, Tom messing up the song. I'll bet that was funny.

Thanks everyone! I don't know why I didn't join this forum earlier.

Must have been a strange 1st gig for the band, with the first 4 or so rows filled with $2500 seats and not necessarily die-hard Petty/Heartbreaker fans. (And the front rows were being served champagne before the show!) Sort of strange, at first. I was 6th row center ($500 seat and so worth it!) and surrounded by pleasant fans sitting there smiling. But I wanted to stand and jump around. Sounded like the back was having ball! Then again, it WAS a benefit and a great cause. By the end, almost everyone in the place was standing and grooving.

I did not get a photo because of the security yelling at us to stop (they were actually nice about it), and I expected an encore of Depot St or Mississippi, but missed out on snapping a picture. The venue was 500 capacity and intimate.

BTW, "Crystal Water" had a nice jam moment... sort of how TP&H jam out "It's Good to Be King" live. Benmont sang his "It's a Good Street" song and really sounded great. Nice vocals! Also, Tom mentioned they have a new "LP" coming out.

I went to the show in Malibu too, and it was great! It was a warm beautiful evening. Saw a couple celebs, Sharon Osborne and we sat behind Laura Dern. I'm sure there were others sprinkled in which I didn't notice. The cocktail party was fun and people were nice.

Funny seeing Tom on bass. Even though it was a fancy event there was a casual feel to the band, almost as if we were watching a rehersal at times. They all seemed to be having fun. Mike was his brilliant self on guitar and played mandolin too on a couple of songs. The time went by fast, I think they played maybe an hour 1/2 max. The top songs for me were Crystal River, Don't Scare Easy and definitely was delighted with I can't Fight It. I was hoping for Depot Street too.

The crowd was kind of subdued, not many rocking out except for us hard core Petty fans LOL :045: The show offered a little bit of everything. One of the fun dancing songs was, I think it was called , Midnight Flyer. Really fun night, I'm looking forward to more shows. It will be interesting to see how they progress.

I don't like the idea of seats being 500 bucks and champagne being served at all

^ think it would be an issue if it was a continual thing, but this was obviously a fund-raiser so if you can rock and help - why not? :)

Nice review Petty Theft! Thanks for telling us about.

I really think the regular shows are gonna be rockin. At least I know for sure Santa Barbara and Ventura will be!!

I have a warbly old Mudcrutch recording of Rip It Up and I recall one of the band members, probably Tom Leadon telling the fans to keep it clean of the dance floor and for everyone to keep their clothes on! LOL!
