Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench of Tom Petty's Heartbreakers hope there's more Mudcrutch in their future.
The reunited Gainesville, Fla., band that Petty and company took to Los Angeles in 1974 releases its self-titled "debut" on April 29 and plays 11 California shows beginning Saturday in Malibu. Promoting the album will be interrupted by a Heartbreakers summer tour that begins May 30, but Campbell tells Billboard.com "there's hope" that Mudcrutch will resurface on the other side of that -- and beyond.
"It's not a nostalgia trip," says keyboardist Tench. "It's a living, breathing band. And it's certainly, I hope, not a one-off, because I really love it and I have missed the sound."
Guitarist Campbell adds that the 14-track album -- recorded with Petty on bass and original Mudcrutch members Tom Leadon (younger brother of Eagles co-founder Bernie Leadon) on guitar and Randall Marsh on drums -- "was such a pleasure to do, and the response to the record has been so positive so far. If there is an audience for it, we would certainly have a reason to do it again."
It sounds like there will be time. Campbell says that after the summer tour the Heartbreakers will "take a couple years off to write the next album. We'd like to make a really great album this time and take our time with the songs ... and work on it at our own speed." There's no new material yet, according to Campbell, but he says that it's "looming."
Campbell and Tench, meanwhile, will be heard on Neil Diamond's new album, "Home Before Dark," after working on 2005's gold-certified "12 Songs." "The songs are wonderful, just wonderful," Tench says, while Campbell adds that, like "12 Songs," it's another sans-drums effort that's "built around Neil and his guitar. We made him play guitar again, and he loved it. He wrote some good songs and, of course, Rick Rubin produced it, which is always fun."

I would love to hear this band live. Maybe there is hope for the rest of us to get to see them live. I guess I may have to get brave and travel alone; I couldn't get any of my family to go with me to any of the concerts this time around due to their work constraints and hectic schedules, and I feel really left out. I am looking forward to my pre-ordered album from Mudcrutch.

I'll be there in Malibu, and also at several of the Troubadour gigs. Won't have my camera (got turned down for a pass) but lord knows everyone else probably will LOL! Stay tuned. :) PS: We have two extra Mudcrutch 6 song downloads. PM me and the first two people get 'em. Hope they don't go to waste.

That's cool and all but not too thrilled about Mike said about a Heartbreaker album, be another 5 years before another one comes out

^ That's what I want to know. Nothing at all against Mudcrutch--and I really mean that--but in that big Rolling Stone article from 2006, Tom said, "I have a good sixty percent of a Heartbreakers record just sitting there waiting to be finished." Now they're going to start from scratch?
What's the longest stretch between albums for a band that never broke up? The Heartbreakers might make a run for that distinction. But if they can keep both bands together, and everyone's happy, more power to them. :045:

That's true but still I mean they can't be dissapointed with their last outing, The Last DJ was a great album with a great and polished sound that sounded very different, unique and was just overall great. I mean I'm looking forward to the Mudcrutch album because I love the songs that they have put out so far but come on guys, it's been 6 years an album should have been done by now especially with all the touring you guys have been doing in recent years

Sorry, no mean to offend, but why do people believe what they read in Rolling Stone?
It's just another rag.

Jeff in 'almost Famous' says, "But it's Rolling Stone."
Then he says about the young William Miller:
"He looks harmless, but he does represent the magazine that trashed Eric Clapton, broke up Cream, ripped Led Zeppelin, and wrote that lame story about the Allman Brothers Band that bummed Duane out before he died. Don't forget the Rules. This little shit is the Enemy. He writes what he sees."
"But it would be cool to be on the cover."

Well, Rolling Stone wasn't the only place where Tom said the next Heartbreakers album was about half finished. I guess it's safer to assume absolutely everyone in journalism is lying or distorting until it can be proven otherwise. Unless it's about the band, I don't waste much time with music magazines anyway.

When I was a boy I had a subscription to Rolling Stone. But as the years went on they started having less about music, and more political, and more movies, etc. than what I cared for. When you're buying what you thought was a "music" mag, and only part of it deals with music, its time to move on. Now I occasionally get MOJO from the UK. Only time I buy RS is if there is a feature on a group I like.

Deb, are you going to any of the TPATH shows this summer? I would love for you to come down and go with us. Robbie is coming and maybe LRed. We'll take 2 cars if we have to!
I would LOVE to see Mudcrutch do an east coast tour!

I caught the last mudcrutch show at the Troubadour on Friday, Tom said on stage he hoped that they could continue with Mudcrutch and to just get out their and buy the album!!!
I was also able to get a interview with Randall Marsh the Drummer of Mudcrutch, and he said the same thing. I hope they are both telling the truth because these shows ROCKED !!!
Check out youtellconcerts.com for the interview and fan reviews of the show
