View Full Version : What is it about Maxtor / Seagate Hard Drives?

Two Months ago I got two Seagate 750 GB hard drives and installed them in my computer here in a mirrored (RAID 1) array.

This morning I booted up the machine and Poof! The sounds of a mouse being skinned alive.....

One of the brand new drives went bye bye.

2 Months? I guess that is infant mortality.

Still have all the data located on the other drive, the computer is still up and running, and I have two more 160 GB drives that contain bootable backups as of the time I replaced the drives.....

But sheesh!

Just needed to vent. The Maxtor 160 GB drives I replaced were failing on average once every couple of years too. I have a stack of three of them here - two for the RAID and 1 'oh nuts' backup just in case.

Seagate will honor the warranty of course. So once I get the replacement drive Ill pop it in, start a RAID restoration and in about 6 hours Ill have the redundancy back again. Till then Im running on a single drive.

(Typing as gently as I can LOL)

Peace

Seagate used to be a good product; I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. I got a 240gig Maxtor last winter. So far so good; but I had to partition it in order for the system to recognize the drive.

Ooo...techie talk...sexy baby. :p

Relic, sorry you are having such troubles with your "smooter" (loved when Anna would say that).

I know how it feels, believe me.

Oddly enough I have never had a drive fail on me. Some I have even had for 5+ years before moving on to a newer computer. This is a good thread to remind people to back up though!
