View Full Version : Radiohead, Jack Johnson, Tom Petty Headline SF’s New Festival

Add another lineup to the ever-growing list of summer festivals: San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park will host the inaugural Outside Lands Festival (http://blogs.sfweekly.com/shookdown/2008/02/radiohead_to_play_golden_gate.php) on August 22-24. And like the debuting All Points West festival in NJ, an “industry source” proclaims that Radiohead and Jack Johnson will headline, along with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The festival is the brainchild of Another Planet Entertainment, a Bay area promoter, and Superfly Entertainment, the geniuses behind the Bonnaroo and Vegoose fests. No ticket details have been announced, though the event is expected to accomodate nearly 160,000 people. The Outside Lands fest should cement Rolling Stone cover boy Jack Johnson (http://www.rollingstone.com/artists/jackjohnson) as the 2008 Festival King, having already secured headlining spots at All Points West, Coachella and Bonnaroo (and two nights at Hawaii’s Kokua Festival, if you want to cover all bases). Stay tuned to Rock Daily for further details on this and all the rest of the summer’s biggest concert blowouts.

You don't want to know, lol. I am baffled as to the reason alternative radio stations play him!

You may have heard this song (If I Had Eyes):

Jack Johnson is a former competitive surfer from Hawaii turned singer/songwriter. Laid back acoustic. Good stuff.

Yeah, there are several songs I like a whole lot and I have them on my iPod but others are just ok. I kind of have to be in the mood to listen to a whole album. He's cool in a James Taylor kind of way.

KFOG is trying to get us into Jack Johnson. Seems to be on their playlist. For a minute, the name confused me, as I was thinking about Robert Johnson, the Delta blues guy (1918-1938) whose music Clapton loved, and made a tribute album about ( Me and Mr. Johnson). With this Jack fellow, I'm not catching on either. Per the Wiki Oracle, he is from Hawaii, writes surf, acoustic, folk and soft rock. Several albums and EP's. Has a loyal following.
Precisely why the Creator decided S/he needed to provide opening acts. I think.
Either way, this answers the SF venue question. I am betting it will be a while before the tix are released.

Re: Golden Gate Park, and crowd control which someone asked about? These events are usually at the Polo Field, which is fenced and easy to contain. It really is no worse than Hyde Park, and those are good concerts. There is another huge meadow that is occasionally used, but my guess would be the P.F. The SOL party was there, and lots of big concerts.
Other locals agree?

So, anyone for going down to the Bowl???

Okay, start hurling lemons at me now. I have three, yes three Jack Johnson CD's. No, make that four. He did the soundtrack for Curious George and my kids love it.

Jack is very laid back, acoustic and mellow. He's a Hawaiian surfer boy who went to UCSB (University California Surf Board) ; ) as a film student. He was making surf films and got into music and moved back to Hawaii and started making albums.

I agree, you've got to be in the mood for him, a laid back mood. I can totally see Jack Johnson doing a festival type venue, that his thing, but TPATH at Golden Gate Park........nnnnnnnnnnnnoooooooo. I can't do the general admission thing. I'm thinking that this tour, as with the others, will have pop-up dates. Please, oh please, oh please....

^Sharon, I'm on the fence about this one too. I just can't believe this will be their only Bay Area appearance.

A small update: I just heard on the radio that TPATH will appear at the Saturday show (8/23). The person was presenting the info in the context of Jack Johnson's appearances at numerous festivals this summer, but they did briefly mention our band.

A small aside: I truly believe my head will explode if I hear "If I Had Eyes" one more time. :095:

Parking is going to be a pain.

This PSA brought to you by a Cow Hollow Chick who knows from painful parking:

Some things may never change. Way early, park on the Great Hiway. Last few years, the events have provided ( for a fee) parking in the Presidio with shuttle buses to the Park.
OR park out in the Avenues and hop Muni. The event organizers will provide bus routes. The N-Judah street car is one block away. One added bummer: kids soccer will be underway, so parking in the hoods near parks, where there is space on weekends, will not be a given. Unlimited parking in residential areas on weekends, except at meters (refer to N-Judah; park in the inner or outer Sunset).

Just hold off on performance enhancements until after you find parking/get off public transportation so ya don't end up in Day City or somewhere.

As someone said, strong are we! Obstacles will be overcome as small bumps.

$225 and the fees are ridiculous...

Shipping is $18.50 for two tickets -- 2nd day mail. They'll only send them by 2nd day.

There is a $25.50 service fee per ticket. If you buy two, that's $51.00

And there is a $4.40 processing fee.

That's a lot of money for a Port-O-Let event.
