Whoopi Goldberg was introduced as the show's latest co-host Wednesday, joining Barbara Walters, Joy Behar and Elisabeth Hasselbeck on the panel of ABC's hit daytime show.
Goldberg replaces Rosie O'Donnell, who ended her controversial -- but ratings-boosting -- tenure in May.
Goldberg has won an Oscar, Emmy, Grammy and Tony in her career. The Oscar was a best supporting actress award for her performance in 1990's "Ghost."
"I love this show," Goldberg, 51, said upon joining the panel on Wednesday's show. "I love coming on it. I love hanging out with you guys."
O'Donnell approved of the choice. "Whoopi is fantastic in every way. She's perfect for the job. She's amazing and one of my favorites," she said in a statement.
"The View" has been undergoing tumult and turnover since the spring of 2006. In April 2006, longtime co-host Meredith Vieira announced her departure for NBC's "Today" show. Later that month, the show announced it had signed O'Donnell as its new panelist.
In late June 2006, Star Jones Reynolds announced on air she was leaving in July. However, host and creator Walters announced the next day Jones Reynolds was gone from the show immediately.
O'Donnell joined the show in September. Her time with the show was marked by a much-publicized feud with New York real estate magnate Donald Trump and debates with co-host Hasselbeck, often O'Donnell's ideological opposite. Ratings reached new highs, however.
In April 2007, O'Donnell announced she would be leaving in June. However, after a furious argument on May 23 with Hasselbeck over Iraq and the war on terror, O'Donnell decided not to return.
Goldberg has had her own brushes with controversy, including a 2004 speech against the Bush administration that resulted in Goldberg being dismissed from a Slim-Fast advertising campaign.
Since O'Donnell's departure, the show has had a number of guest panelists, including Suze Orman, Kathy Griffin, Gayle King and Sherri Shepherd.

"The View" is in "ongoing discussions" with several people for another cast slot, a spokesman said, according to The Associated Press. Shepherd, who has appeared several times this summer, was rumored to be the leading candidate, but InTouch Weekly reports that negotiations between Shepherd and ABC have broken down

I like Whoopi. She's controversial without being so loud. Does anyone ever watch The View? I'm curious, what do you think of it?

^ I never could stand that show Ref. But I did watch it yesterday and today because I love Whoopi. I think she's going to be a fun and interesting addition to that group. She's not overpowering or overbearing. She's just plain old down to earth Whoopi. I must say, I've enjoyed the two days I've watched since she's joined. Now, will I continue to watch? I don't know. That Elisabeth Hasselbeck chick gets on my last friggin' nerve. I like Joy Behar, she's pretty straight forward and funny, and of course, there's Baba Wawa, lol. We'll see I might give it a try for a while. They do get alot of really great guest on this show.

I've never seen The View, but I do like Whoopi. However, I heard
on the radio this morning that she was defending Michael Vick on
the show??!! Anyone see that? :icon_eek:

I heard that too, Barb. I'm sorry I just can't stand The View. That idiot Eliz. just makes me want to scream. If they just went with Joy and Whoopi, I might be able to watch it.

Barb, I saw that. She wasn't really defending him as much as she was talking about how dog fighting is something that is done quite a bit down in the deep south. Mind you, "deep south" is a term people will use when they're referring to the poor, uneducated people. As horrible and shocking as it sounds, it's almost like a sport down there. The thought of that just makes me sick at the stomach. Time to find a new sport people!

I like Whoopi, too. But, I think she was way off base in her defense of Michael Vick. I only saw an excerpt, but it sounded like she was excusing Vick's actions in the dog fighting case on the grounds that it (dog fighting) is a "normal" pastime/practice in the South.

Well, I say, bullshit! Slavery was once a "normal" practice in the South as well. And, not so very long ago, lynching was also a "normal" practice. I'm sure she wouldn't dismiss slavery and lynching as easily as she dismissed dog fighting (and dog torture).

I just find it sad that she would defend Vick's immoral behavial for any reason. But, on the basis that he's "from the South" and "that's just what they do down there" is baffling and just plain stupid.

Oh Carol, you would have loved todays show. Your girlfriend Elisabeth was talking her usual conservative political rhetoric. Discussing Senator Craig. But Whoopi promptly put her in her place and that was the end of that, LOL!

Nel, I couldn't agree more. I like Whoopi, huge fan of hers, but as for making excuses for Michael Vick or defending what he did, nope, sorry, wrong corner Whoopi.
